Patterns of bathymetric zonation of bivalves in the Porcupine Seabight and adjacent Abyssal plain, NE Atlantic
Although the organization patterns of fauna in the deep sea have been broadly documented, most studies have focused on the megafauna. Bivalves represent about 10% of the deep-sea macrobenthic fauna, being the third taxon in abundance after polychaetes and peracarid crustaceans. This study, based on a large data set, examined the bathymetric distribution, patterns of zonation and diversity–depth trends of bivalves from the Porcupine Seabight and adjacent Abyssal Plain (NE Atlantic). A total of 131,334 individuals belonging to 76 species were collected between 500 and 4866 m. Most of the species showed broad depth ranges with some ranges extending over more than 3000 m. Furthermore, many species overlapped in their depth distributions. Patterns of zonation were not very strong and faunal change was gradual. Nevertheless, four bathymetric discontinuities, more or less clearly delimited, occurred at about 750, 1900, 2900 and 4100 m. These boundaries indicated five faunistic zones: (1) a zone above 750 m marking the change from shelf species to bathyal species; (2) a zone from 750 to 1900 m that corresponds to the upper and mid-bathyal zones taken together; (3) a lower bathyal zone from 1900 to 2900 m; (4) a transition zone from 2900 to 4100 m where the bathyal fauna meets and overlaps with the abyssal fauna and (5) a truly abyssal zone from approximately 4100–4900 m (the lower depth limit of this study), characterized by the presence of abyssal species with restricted depth ranges and a few specimens of some bathyal species with very broad distributions. The 4100 m boundary marked the lower limit of distribution of many bathyal species. There was a pattern of increasing diversity downslope from 500 to 1600 m, followed by a decrease to minimum values at about 2700 m. This drop in diversity was followed by an increase up to maximum values at 4100 m and then again, a fall to 4900 m (the lower depth limit in this study
Patterns of morphological variation of the deep-sea gastropod Troschelia berniciensis (King, 1846) (Buccinidae) from the northeastern Atlantic Ocean
Very little is known about population differentiation in bathyal species. The neogastropod Troschelia berniciensis occurs along the northeastern Atlantic continental shelf and upper slope. The species was relatively common at depths of 320–1265 m to the west and southwest of Ireland. Measurements of 435 specimens confirmed literature reports of variability in shell shape in this species. Shells varied significantly in relative spire height and in height-to-breadth ratios. Changes in shell shape were correlated strongly with depth, broad low-spired shells occurring at the shallow end of the bathymetric range, and slender high-spired shells in deeper water. A significant but weak trend for decrease in relative spire height with increasing latitude was identified. Possible causal factors for these patterns are discussed.
These results support the theory that the upper slope is a site of potential importance for population differentiation for the deep-sea gastropod fauna
Latitudinal and bathymetric trends in body size of the deep-sea gastropod Troschelia berniciensis (King)
Body size is a fundamental topic in ecology with important implications for community structure and biodiversity. Although there are numerous studies addressing patterns of geographic variation of body size in deep-sea benthos, results are conflicting. Thus geographic patterns of body size in deep-sea organisms remain poorly described. We analysed depth and latitudinal trends of body size in a species of gastropod, Troschelia berniciensis (King, 1846) from the eastern North Atlantic. We tested the hypotheses that (1) body size increases linearly with latitude and (2) body size increases with depth. Results partially supported the predictions. Firstly, there was a significant linear increase of body size with latitude, but this trend was weak. Secondly, body size decreased with depth. Environmental gradients that cause large-scale patterns of body-size variation in surface environments would have little effect on communities living at great depths. Latitudinal and depth clines may be produced by independent mechanisms that operate on different scales of time and space
Reproductive strategies of two deep-sea gastropod species from the Porcupine Seabight (Northeast Atlantic)
Two species of small gastropods (<6 mm in length), Amphissa acutecostata (Philippi, 1844) and Gymnobela subaraneosa (Dautzenberg and Fischer, 1896), widely distributed in the northeast Atlantic, were found in large numbers in the Porcupine Seabight (Northeast Atlantic). Except for some aspects of taxonomy and distribution, as well as some data on larval development, the biology of these species is unknown. This study describes basic aspects of the life-history strategies of both species. Histological studies showed that oocyte and sperm development in both species was similar to the gametogenetic patterns observed in other deep-sea gastropods. In females, oogonia proliferated in the germinal epithelium and developed into previtellogenic oocytes (30–40 m), which grew into vitellogenic primary oocytes. Vitellogenic oocytes were covered by a thin layer of follicle cells involved in the vitellogenic processes. The maximum size for mature oocytes was 99.06 m for A. acutecostata and 114.82 m for G. subaraneosa. In A. acutecostata most of the volume of the ovary was occupied by previtellogenic and early vitellogenic oocytes, whereas in G. subaraneosa most of the volume was filled by large vitellogenic oocytes. Both species showed quasi-continuous production of oocytes. The oocyte size-frequency diagrams suggested a continuous release of a small number of oocytes throughout the year for A. acutecostata, and asynchronous periodic spawning events for G. subaraneosa. Gonad development and gametogenesis could be strongly affected by presence of parasites in one of the populations of G. subaraneosa
Aspects of the distribution, population structure and reproduction of the gastropod Tibia delicatula (Nevill, 1881) inhabiting the oxygen minimum zone of the Oman and Pakistan continental margins
The present study describes some aspects of the distribution and biology of Tibia delicatula (Nevill), a gastropod belonging to the family Strombidae. This species has been found in large numbers in the upper oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) of the Oman margin, and has also been collected from the OMZ of the Pakistan margin. The highest abundance of adult specimens in the Oman OMZ was found between 300 and 450 m. Numbers dropped rapidly below 450 m, to zero below 500 m depth. Similarly dense populations were not observed in the Pakistan OMZ. Multiple regression with oxygen concentration and depth indicates that depth (and its related variables) is the main factor explaining the variation in abundance of T. delicatula. The populations from the Oman and Pakistan OMZs were dominated by juveniles. This suggests a unimodal size structure with evidence of a marked recruitment event. Basic reproductive aspects were analysed. All specimens had a penis and sperm groove. The gonad wall consisted of reticular tissue that might be used for nutrient storage or as an irrigation system. Only vitellogenic oocytes were present. The large oocyte sizes observed (200–300 ?m) suggest a lecithotrophic larval development
Role of colonization in spatio-temporal patchiness of microgastropods in coralline turf habitat
The ability of benthic macrofauna to disperse and colonize new habitats throughout their life may contribute substantially to small-scale patchiness in abundances in different habitats. Microgastropods in coralline turf on rocky shores in Australia are very patchy in abundance at different spatio-temporal scales. They therefore represent an ideal assemblage for testing hypotheses about processes of colonization. Patterns and rates of colonization of 10 species of microgastropods were investigated in one intertidal habitat (coralline turf) in Botany Bay, New South Wales, Australia, using artificial substrata, which are considered to be a good mimic of natural coralline turfs. The experiment was designed to test the hypotheses that (1) patterns (abundance of colonizing individuals) and mode (juveniles vs. adults) of colonization depends on the proximity of a patch to a potential source of dispersing colonists (i.e. patch of natural coralline turf), (2) different species show different rates of colonization, and (3) patterns of succession are not repeatable among different patches of natural algae. Seven different plots (natural patches of coralline turf) were randomly chosen in the area of study. Artificial units (called patches) were placed at different distances around each plot (within the plot and 0, 50 or 100 cm away from the edge). Samples were collected 6, 13, and 27 days after the experiment started. Colonization was rapid (i.e. within 6 days) for most species. Pattern (number of individuals) and mode of colonization (adults vs. juveniles) varied among algal plots. Most species responded differently across patches causing no consistent patterns of colonization. Furthermore, patterns of colonization of artificial units were not always synchronous with, or in the same direction as, changes in abundances in the nearest algal plots, which themselves showed no consistent spatio-temporal pattern.<br/
Faunal change and bathymetric diversity gradient in deep-sea prosobranchs from Northeastern Atlantic
Despite the plethora of studies, geographic patterns of diversity in deep sea remain subject of speculation. This study considers a large dataset to examine the faunal change and depth-diversity gradient of prosobranch molluscs in the Porcupine Seabight and adjacent Abyssal Plain (NE Atlantic). Rates of species succession (addition and loss) increased rapidly with increasing depth and indicated four possible areas of faunal turnover at about 700, 1600, 2800 and 4100 m. Depth was a significant predictor of diversity, explaining nearly a quarter the variance. There was a pattern of decreasing diversity downslope from ~250 m to ~1500–1600 m, followed by an increase to high values at about 4000 m and then again, a fall to ~4915 m. Processes causing diversity patterns of prosobranchs in the Porcupine Seabight and adjacent Abyssal Plain are likely to differ in magnitude or type, from those operating in other Atlantic areas
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
