    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

    DFG-Project “Compact Courtyard Housing for Sustainable High-Density Settlements” – Final Report

    Prof. Jan Cremers’ research group set itself the goal of reinterpreting and further developing the courtyard house type to meet the current requirements of sustainable urbanisation. The hypothesis was pursued that courtyard houses have the potential to create sustainable, high-density neighbourhoods with a high degree of privacy and residential value and thus offer a feasible way out of the dilemma of conventional types, where high density and the resulting low spacing offer little privacy in the interior and exterior spaces. Based on the principles and inherent regularities of the courtyard house, the so-called “compact courtyard house” was developed as a new type of courtyard house using an interdisciplinary and systematic approach with current tools while its functionality was examined step by step in further stages. The type pursues few, yet clearly defined goals and consequently shows characteristics that distinguish it from known courtyard house types. As a largely autonomous building, it is optimised on its own space-saving plot (approx. 60 to 200 m²) of varying proportions with three to five storeys for one or more parties, it can keep ownership simple and thus even function as a single-family house. Courtyards / outdoor spaces shielded from view (instead of exposed “spacing areas” with a lower utility value outside the building) are integrated into the building structure as exclusively private usable areas (“as private as a bathroom“) assigned to individual parties. These protected areas are mainly used for lighting and ventilation of the interior spaces, merging interior and exterior spaces into a protected and closely interlinked living space. The individual buildings are generally orientated towards the public or semi-public space on one side (e.g. street front), but are closed for add-on on three sides (fire walls). This way, compact courtyard houses of very different shapes and sizes can be added and combined as “building blocks” of a “modular system” to create high-density urban neighbourhoods. The topic is thus equally at home in architecture as well as urban planning. To date, a total of eight basic types / concepts (C1 to C8) has been developed as the basis for a comprehensive typology with a wide range of variants that can be derived from the respective concepts’ basic geometric principles and solution strategies. The private courtyards, which vary in size, shape and location in the building, also have the function of microclimatic zones with a favourable effect on the thermal and acoustic comfort of the interior spaces

    Die Forschungsgruppe von Prof. Jan Cremers hatte es sich als Ziel gesetzt, den Typus des Hofhauses auf die aktuellen Anforderungen einer nachhaltigen Urbanisierung hin neu zu interpretieren und weiterzuentwickeln. Dabei wurde der Hypothese nachgegangen, dass Hofhäuser ein Potenzial für nachhaltige Quartiere hoher Dichte bei einem gleichzeitig hohen Maß an Privatheit und Wohnwert haben und damit einen möglichen Ausweg aus dem Dilemma konventioneller Typen aufzeigen, die bei hoher Dichte und folglich geringen Abstandsflächen wenig Privatheit in den Innen- wie Außenräumen bieten. Auf den Prinzipien und inhärenten Gesetzmäßigkeiten des Hofhauses aufbauend wurde mit einem interdisziplinären und systematischen Ansatz mit aktuellen Werkzeugen das sog. „kompakte Hofhaus“ als neuartiger Hofhaustyp entwickelt und seine Funktionsweise in weiteren Stufen schrittweise untersucht. Der Typus verfolgt wenige, aber klar definierte Ziele und besitzt folglich Merkmale, die ihn in der Summe von bekannten Hofhaustypen unterscheiden. Als weitgehend autonomes Gebäude ist es auf seiner eigenen flächensparenden Parzelle (ca. 60 bis 200 m²) unterschiedlicher Proportion mit drei- bis zu fünf Geschossen für eine oder mehrere Parteien optimiert und kann Besitzverhältnisse einfach halten und somit sogar als Einfamilienhaus fungieren. Nicht einsehbare Höfe / Außenräume (anstelle von exponierten „Abstandsflächen“ mit geringerem Nutzwert außerhalb des Gebäudes) werden als ausschließlich private, nur einzelnen Parteien zugeordnete Nutzflächen („so privat wie ein Badezimmer“) in die Gebäudestruktur integriert. Über diese geschützten Bereiche erfolgt schwerpunktmäßig die Belichtung und Belüftung der Innenräume, so dass Innen- und Außenräume zu einem geschützten und eng miteinander verzahnten Lebensraum verschmelzen können. Die Einzelgebäude orientieren sich in der Regel an einer Seite zum öffentlichen oder halböffentlichen Raum (z. B. Straßenfront), an drei Seiten jedoch sind sie zum Anbauen geschlossen (Brandwände). So lassen sich kompakte Hofhäuser sehr unterschiedlicher Form und Größe als „Bausteine“ eines „Baukastens“ zu urbanen Quartieren hoher Dichte addieren und kombinieren. Das Thema ist somit gleichermaßen in der Architektur wie im Städtebau angesiedelt. Es wurden bisher insgesamt acht Grundtypen / Konzepte (K1 bis K8) als Basis einer umfangreichen Typologie mit einem großen Reichtum an Varianten entwickelt, die sich aus den geometrischen Grundprinzipien und Lösungsstrategien der jeweiligen Konzepte ableiten lassen. Dabei haben die privaten Innenhöfe, die in Größe, Form und Lage im Gebäude variieren, auch die Aufgabe von mikroklimatische Zonen, die sich vorteilhaft auf den thermischen und akustischen Komfort der Innenräume auswirken
