We define the body posture as an individual, individual feature of each person, which is expressed by the figure. A defect of posture or a disorder of the body statics is any anomaly from the correct posture that may be congenital or acquired. OBJECTIVE The main aim of the study was to assess the relationship between dysfunctions of the stomatognathic system and disturbances in body statics. The research was conducted from January to February 2022 using the proprietary questionnaire, which was made available online (Google Forms). RESULTS At least one symptom of body statics disorders was noticeable in 77 people from the group of people with problems within the stomatognathic system (88,51%). Only 10 people with disorders of the masticatory system motor system did not report any postural abnormalities (11,49%). The results of the research show that there is a statistically significant relationship between the occurrence of dysfunctions within the stomatognathic system and disturbances in body statics (x2 = 28,11 > x2 = 22,4570,001;6 - statistically significant relationship, rc = 0,304 - average strength of the relationship). CONCLUSIONS The complexity of the issue shows that focusing on only one problem may not produce the measured therapeutic effects. Only comprehensive and properly planned treatment brings the maximum therapeutic effect. Keywords: stomatognathic system, faulty posture STRESZCZENIE WPROWADZENIE Układ stomatognatyczny to zespół tkanek i narządów w skład którego wchodzą: żuchwa, zęby (górne oraz dolne), dwa stawy skroniowo-żuchwowe, mięśnie, więzadła oraz liczne naczynia: nerwowe, krwionośne oraz limfatyczne.

INTRODUCTION The stomatognathic system is a morphological and functional group of tissues and organs, the main task of which is food intake, initial chewing and digestion, but also emotional expression, speech articulation and breathing. Dysfunctions in the masticatory system may take the form of: muscle or joint pain, excessive muscle tension, crackles in the temporomandibular joints and reduced mobility, tooth clenching or ear ailments, especially in the form of: noise, hypersensitivity or deterioration of hearing. OBJECTIVE The main aim of the study was to assess the occurrence of functional dysfunctions of the stomatognathic system among students. The research was carried out from January to February 2022 using the proprietary online questionnaire and the results were statistically analyzed using the chi-square test. RESULTS There was a statistically significant relationship (p≤0,05) between the occurrence of stomatognathic system disorders and the location of the headache (rc = 0,0252 – weak strength of the relationship), muscle tension (rc = 0,304 - average strength of the relationship) and ear ailments (rc = 0,35 - average strength of the relationship). CONCLUSIONS The most important issue in the treatment of stomatognathic system disorders is the interdisciplinary and holistic view of the patient. It is important to introduce multidirectional and multi-stage therapy, thanks to which we can achieve maximum therapeutic effects

Disorders of the statics of the body and the temporomandibular joint

    Get PDF
INTRODUCTION The temporomandibular joint is a synovial, complex (hinge-sliding) joint that connects the temporal bone with the mandible by means of an articular disc. Temporomandibular joint dysfunctions most often concern several disease entities and include various symptoms and ailments. One of the first symptoms of the disease is pain that stems from a muscle or joint. In addition, we can observe: limitations in the mobility and range of movement of the jaw, problems with chewing food, crackles in the joint, pain in pressure and touch of the muscles, earaches and noise or changes in the appearance of the face (the so-called "square face"). Any deviation from the correct body posture is called a posture defect. OBJECTIVE The main aim of the study is to present the significant relationship between disturbed statics of the body and the temporomandibular joint, thanks to which we can explain the importance of proper planning of diagnostics as well as conducting dental and physiotherapeutic therapy. THE WEIGHT OF THE BODCIES The materials used to write the article include scientific works from 1992-2021. The data was collected using the PubMed search engine and manual filtering. 80 publications were qualified for the analysis. SUMMARY According to the analyzed literature, we believe that there is a relationship between disturbances in the body statics and the stomatognathic system. The complexity of the issue shows that it is important to conduct multi-directional and interdisciplinary therapy.</div

The total number of confirmed infections was 217,119,281 and the total deaths were 4,510,202 worldwide, as of August 31, 2021. The changes in life caused by these new threats also impacted patient care. Medics around the world have had to adapt to this new reality. There is a lot of research into the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the diagnosis and treatment of other diseases, including cancer. The aim of the study: Paying attention to the causes of delays in the diagnosis of cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic, with particular emphasis on oral cancer. Material and method: The research was done using the PubMed and Google Scholar articles about the topics of: covid-19 pandemic; oral cancer; healthcare; cancer diagnosis Description of the state of knowledge: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on the entire health system around the world. According to various studies, there were fewer cancer diagnoses between 2020 and 2021. Studies have identified the causes of these delays, such as: overwork and fatigue of health care workers, limited access to doctors due to quarantine, patients' fear of being infected in a health care facility, and the lack of follow-up visits, including dental visits. Summary: Undoubtedly, the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has put the people with chronic illnesses and those who are immunocompromised at the most risk. Solutions such as telemedicine during lockdown may be helpful in caring for cancer patients, but cannot replace a comprehensive examination by a doctor, especially in the case of oral cancer. As a result of the diagnostic delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, a significant increase in the number of cancer deaths worldwide is expected. Key words: covid-19; pandemic; oral cance

Occurrence of Cervical Spine Pain and Its Intensity in Young People with Temporomandibular Disorders

    No full text
Background: The main aim of this cross-sectional study was to compare the occurrence and severity of cervical spine pain in young adults diagnosed with TMDs with a healthy control group (without TMDs). Methods: The study was conducted from June to July 2023. Inclusion criteria were age (18–30 years), cervical spine pain (for at least 1 month), and consent to participate in the study. The study was conducted based on RDC/TMD protocol, an original questionnaire, and a physiotherapeutic examination focused on detecting TMDs. The cervical pain level was assessed using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Thus, a total of 95 subjects were registered for the trials, 51 people (53.7%) constituted the control group (without TMDs), while 44 (46.3%) people constituted the study group (with TMDs). Results: The mean age of people participating in the study was 22.2 ± 2.2 years in the study group and 22.5 ± 3.1 years in the control group. The largest group was people aged 21–25 (n = 51 people, 53.7%). Patients from the study group more often experienced pain in the stomatognathic system during palpation (both in the muscle, joint, and musculoskeletal groups) and had reduced mobility of the temporomandibular joints in every movement (p < 0.001). People from the study group were also characterized by less mobility of the cervical spine (p < 0.05), apart from extension movement (p > 0.05). The analysis showed that of the 95 people participating in the study, 85.4% reported problems in the cervical spine area (n = 81), of which almost all people in the study group struggled with this problem (n = 43, 97.7%). It was found that cervical spine pain was significantly more common in people with TMDs (p < 0.05, chi2 = 10.118, df = 1, rc = 0.31). The level of pain was significantly higher in people from the study group (p < 0.001, chi2 = 45.765, df = 4, rc = 0.57). Conclusions: Our research has shown that the occurrence of cervical spine pain is more common in the group of young people with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). In young people, this problem is rarely recognized and properly treated

    Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy—Diagnostics and Clinimetrics

    No full text
Cervical myelopathy is referred to in many ways in the English literature, for example, as cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM), spondylotic radiculomyelopathy (SRM) or degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM). In addition, more frequent occurrences are noted in older adults and to a greater extent in men. The causes of the effects of cervical myelopathy may be the appearance of lesions on the spinal cord, ischemia due to compression of the vertebral artery and repeated micro-injuries during maximal movements—hyperflexion or hyperextension. It is well known that lesions on the spinal cord may occur in a quarter of the population, and this problem is clearly noted in people over 60 years old. The symptoms of SCM develop insidiously, and their severity and side (unilateral or bilateral) are associated with the location and extent of spinal cord compression. Neurological examination most often diagnoses problems in the upper limbs (most often paresis with developing hand muscle atrophy), pyramidal paralysis in one or both lower limbs and disorders in the urinary system. To make a diagnosis of CSM, it is necessary to perform MRI and neurophysiological tests (such as EMG or sensory and/or motor-evoked potentials). The use of appropriately selected scales and specific tests in diagnostics is also crucial. This narrative review article describes the latest knowledge on the diagnosis and clinimetrics of cervical spondylotic myelopathy in adults and provides future directions

Xerostomia among elderly patients – systematic review Martyna Drożak1, Paulina Drożak1, Justyna Dziekońska2, Martyna Nowińska2, Paulina Grabowy2 Students’ Scientific Association of Chair and Department of Family Medicine, Medical University of Lublin Students’ Research Group of Applied Psychology, Medical University of Lublin Abstract Introduction and purpose: Xerostomia is a salivary secretion malfunction that affects from 1 to 29% of the population. It is a common problem among elderly patients, however undeniably it still remains an underdiagnosed issue. Searching among available literature in the PubMed database with the following phrases: xerostomia; elderly, the aim of this article was to provide a broad review on the underdiagnosed problem which is xerostomia among elderly patients. Description: A group at risk of developing xerostomia are people over 65 years old and women in the perimenopausal period. Although dry mouth varies in etiology, geriatric patients mostly develop xerostomia as a result of head and neck radiotherapy, Sjögren syndrome or medication treatment. Untreated symptoms can lead to severe issues which heavily impact not only oral health of the patient, but also their everyday life quality, since xerostomia may lead into difficulty of speaking, swallowing and tasting. The plan of treatment is influenced by the etiology of the case, however it is aimed to stimulate salivary flow and eradicate the use of unnecessary medication which may cause dry mouth. Prevention of dry mouth is based on maintenance of good oral hygiene. Conclusions: Diagnosing the problem early can prevent patients from suffering the consequences of chronic xerostomia, therefore awareness should be brought to this issue. Dentist could also highly improve the quality of xerostomic patient’s life, if the chosen treatment significantly improved patient’s symptoms. Key words: xerostomia; elderl
