A numerical investigation of the cracking behaviour of reinforced-concrete tie elements
No full textThe cracking behaviours of reinforced-concrete (RC) ties are investigated by conducting virtual experiments using non-linear finite-element analysis. The assumptions in the model are verified by benchmarking the classical experiments of B. Bresler and V. V. Bertero as conducted in 1968 and P. J. Yannopoulos, conducted in 1989, which shows good agreement in the comparison of steel strains, development of crack widths and crack spacing. Furthermore, virtual experiments on four different RC ties show that the size of the cover and not the bar diameter governs the crack spacing and thus implicitly the crack width. An increase of the bar diameter has a beneficial effect in reducing the steel stress and the associated steel strains, which in turn reduces the crack width. How Knowledge of the Player Character’s Alignment Affect Decision Making in an Interactive Narrative
No full textIn game narrative the central role of the protagonist becomes a challenge as the protagonist often conflates with the player character, which the author and the player share control over. This paper investigates whether knowledge of the player character’s alignment, i.e. the inner thoughts of the character, can influence how they decide to progress in a game. The player character’s alignment will present an internal conflict, which will sometimes conflict with the external goal of a game. It is investigated whether players are more likely to abandon their external goal, and ultimately change their in-game behaviour, when exposed to the internal conflict of their character. A test was conducted in which participants played through one of two similar versions of the same game; one in which they were exposed to the player character’s internal conflict, and another in which they were not. The test was conducted online and ended with 467 participants. The data shows that a significant ratio of players changed their behaviour in the game, when exposed to the inner conflict of the player character

No full textIn base alle osservazioni rivolte alle linee generali di pianificazione linguistica attuate nella Regione autonoma Friuli Venezia Giulia, si compie un tentativo di confrontare, ove pos- sibile, i settori di intervento dello sloveno e del friulano, in particolare nell’ambito dell’e- ducazione. Lo spazio geografico di riferimento è, nello specifico, la provincia di Udine. Nel contributo si procede innanzi tutto alla valutazione di determinati contenuti e princi- pi espressi nei testi legislativi specifici che permetterebbero di comprendere le potenzialità di un’eventuale politica anche nell’ottica del pluralismo linguistico. In seguito si cerca di individuare gli organi principali che emanano le disposizioni in materia di pianificazione linguistica, gli strumenti e le modalità di messa in opera della stessa, mettendo in evidenza alcune importanti esperienze.
Poiché i principi espressi dagli strumenti di tutela, che richiamano la normativa statale, euro- pea e internazionale in materia, permetterebbero un livello di sviluppo elevato della condizio- ne linguistica delle comunità interessate, l’autore mette a disposizione alcuni dati che mettono in luce la discrepanza tra il livello dichiarativo o programmatico della politica linguistica e lo stato reale. In questo senso si accenna anche al ruolo svolto diffusamente dal dissenso espresso in atteggiamenti, opinioni e ideologie che ostacolano la libertà di esercitare o di ampliare, secondo le aspirazioni dei parlanti, il diritto di usare nella vita sociale le lingue altre.
According to the observation made of the general lines of language planning, implemented in the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, the author makes an attempt to compare, where possible, the areas of Slovenian and Friulan intervention, particularly in the field of education. The geographical space of reference is, specifically, the province of Udine.
He proceeds firstly to the evaluation of certain contents and principles, expressed in specific legislation, that would allow to understand the potential of any policy, also in the perspective of the interaction and linguistic pluralism. He tries then to identify the major organs that enact the regulations on language planning, as well as the tools and the procedures for its implementation, also by emphasizing some important experiences. Since the principles expressed by the means of protection, which recall the state, European and international legislation, would allow a high level of development of the linguistic condition of the concerned communities, the author provides some data which highlight the discrepancy between the declarative or programmatic level of language policy and the real state. In this sense, he also hints at the role played by the widespread disagreement expressed in attitudes, opinions and ideologies that hinder the freedom to exercise or to expand, according to the aspirations of the speakers, the right to use in social life the different languages

No full textIn questo lungo racconto che segna una svolta anche nella sua stessa produzione Calvino mette a tema non tanto la disabilità in sé, quanto il rapporto nel quale essa inevitabilmente coinvolge l’altro da sé, quell’‘altro’ dalla cui straniata prospettiva si leggono i fatti del racconto. L’autore guida, così, il lettore a una meditazione sull’inalienabilità, sulla tenuta dell’essenza umana, sulla natura umana come fatto che, nelle sue molteplici forme, si impone, oltre che all’esperienza, alle considerazioni dell’intelletto ma soprattutto alle risposte della volontà. I confini dell’umano, che fino a un certo punto, nel racconto, sembrano oggetto di discernimento razionale, si rivelano nella loro problematicità ineludibile, che esige continui riorientamenti, correzioni di rotta da parte di una volontà chiamata allora non più a delimitare, ma ad allargare tali confini, anche oltre lo spazio di manovra dell’intelletto e in sofferta dialettica rispetto alla prospettiva culturale marxista. Si tratta di una volontà da trasfigurare, che sia espressione non solo del sé, ma anche, e soprattutto, della rinuncia all’affermazione di sé di fronte all’intuizione di vedersi altro rispetto a qualcuno che si fa presente e interpella. Lo stile interrogativo, l’attitudine al progressivo approssimarsi al cuore delle questioni, le forme espressive attraverso le quali l’autore sospinge il lettore ad un capovolgimento di sguardo sui confini dell’idea di disabilità sono oggetto privilegiato di queste analisi, in quanto strumenti performativi di una poetica tesa a far maturare nei lettori coscienza delle cose del mondo, a far esplodere, come diceva Calvino, la «carica morale dei fatti».In this long story that marks a turning point also in his own production, Calvino focuses not so much on disability in itself, but on the relationship in which it inevitably involves the other from himself, that other from whose alienated perspective we read the facts of the tale. Thus, the author guides the reader to a meditation on inalienability, on the sealing of human essence, on human nature as a fact that, in its many forms, imposes itself on the considerations of the intellect but especially to the responses of the will. It is a will that must transfigured, which is an expression not only of the self, but also, and above all, of the renunciation of self-affirmation. The interrogative style, the attitude to progressively approach the heart of the issues, the expressive forms through which the author pushes the reader to a reversal of the gaze on the boundaries of the idea of disability are the privileged object of these analyze
