A Modular Double Electrode Flow Cell with Exchangeable Generator and Detector Electrodes

Generator-collector experiments offer insights into the mechanisms of electrochemical reactions by correlating the product and generator currents. Most commonly, these experiments are performed using commercially-available rotating ring-disk electrodes (RRDE). We developed a modular double electrode flow cell (DEFC) with exchangeable generator and detector electrodes where the electrode width equals the channel width. As a test case, we considered the ferri-/ferrocyanide redox couple in experiments, analytical calculations and multiphysics simulations. Wall effects reduce the current density by less than 10 % in our geometry for the investigated conditions and the analytical solution for the limiting current at the generator electrode applies to widths up to 5 mm. The collection efficiency for all investigated electrode widths is close to the expected 35.4 % above a flow rate of 1.0 (mL/min)1/3 but only independent of the flow rate for electrodes with width 5 mm and larger. Kinetic constants of 1.3–1.9 ⋅ 10−3 cm/s are obtained from Koutecký-Levich analysis and 21.0–5.0 ⋅ 10−3 cm/s from Nicholson analysis for the DEFC, which falls within the range reported previously. We conclude that our DEFC with exchangeable electrodes is an attractive alternative to commercial RRDEs which offers the flexibility to optimize both the generator and collector materials for the desired reaction.Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation)Germany's Excellence StrategyGerman Helmholtz AssociationHelmholtz Energy Materials Foundry (HEMF)German Helmholtz AssociationOpen-Access-Publikationsfonds 202

This work consists of an annotated translation of the Japanese folklore’s short story “Chikara Tarou”, by Japanese author Keisuke Nishimoto, from Japanese language to Brazilian Portuguese language. The research aims to contribute to the Japanese Literary Translation Studies through an analysis of linguistic and cultural aspects presented in the source text, as well as its consequences in the target culture and language, theoretically based on Venuti’s (2004) concepts of foreignization and domestication. Furthermore, this monograph seeks to disseminate the Mukashi-banashi literary genre and the short story, not yet translated in Brazil, providing knowledge concerning the author, genre, Japanese culture. In addition, it is as an attempt of deconstructing sexism presented in the short story through its annotated translation.O presente trabalho consiste em uma tradução comentada do conto folclórico japonês “Chikara Tarou”, versão do autor Keisuke Nishimoto, do japonês para o português brasileiro.

The effect of M-VAC (methotrexate, vinblastine, adriamycin and cisplatin) chemotherapy supported recombinant human granulocyte stimulating factor (rG-CSF) was studied in 18 patients with metastatic urothelal cancer. The mean age of the patients was 66 years. Of the patients 6 had lung metastasis and 12 had distant lymph node metastasis. In this study recombinant human granulocyte stimulating factor was administered therapeutically at 100 to 250 micrograms subcutaneously after the white blood cell count was less than 3, 000/mm. Relative dose-intensity (RDI) was 0.88 +/- 0.11 and 0.72 +/- 0.19 for 11 patients with rG-CSF and 7 without rG-CSF, respectively. The relative dose regardless of the interval of the cycle of M-VAC chemotherapy (%Dose) was 0.95 +/- 0.06 and 0.86 +/- 0.09 for the patients with rG-CSF and those without rG-CSF, respectively. Of seven patients without rG-CSF 3 patients responded (response rate 42%, mean survival period 7.4 months). Of 11 patients treated with rG-CSF 3 patients responded (response rate 72.7%, mean survival period 20.0 months). Although rG-CSF increased the RDI of M-VAC chemotherapy, the correlation of response with RDI was not clearly demonstrated. The therapeutical administrations of rG-CSF fail to improve the mean white blood cell nadir and to prevent the decrease of the platelet and reticulocyte count

Designing Electrochemical Systems for Energy Conversion

Electrochemical water splitting to hydrogen and oxygen is an attractive approach to store and convert intermittent renewable energy sources. Energy efficient, cost effective and durable electrochemical systems are highly required. Firstly, CeOx coated oxygen evolution electrocatalysts were developed to improve the stability. Unique permselectivity of the CeOx layer was disclosed, which helps to prevent dissolution of active metal site. Because oxygen evolution reaction requires a higher overpotential than hydrogen evolution reaction, kinetically facile oxidation of soluble redox ions was proposed as an alternative anodic reaction, in which the oxidized redox ions can be used for succeeding homogeneous reactions, such as treatment of H2S. How to tune the thermodynamics and the diffusion of candidate redox ions is discussed for a desired application. In addition to the anodic reaction, cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction has to be optimized. To maximize hydrogen evolution performance in near-neutral pH buffered conditions, concentration overpotentials from local pH and hydrogen on a Pt cathode are distinguished by mass transport modelling. Finally, stand-alone module was developed to perform solar-driven redox-mediated H2S splitting to H2 and S under natural solar irradiation

Towards high-speed computational scattered light imaging by introducing compressed sensing for optimized illumination

    No full text
We propose the application of Compressed Sensing to Computational Scattered Light Imaging to decrease measurement time and data storage. Computational Scattered Light Imaging (ComSLI) determines three-dimensional fiber orientations and crossings in biomedical tissues like brain tissue. Currently, conventional ComSLI is time-consuming and generates large data. Compressed Sensing reconstructs signals with fewer samples than required by the Shannon-Nyquist theorem with minimal perceptual loss, significantly reducing the number of measurements. We introduce an optimized illumination strategy for ComSLI based on the Discrete Cosine Transform and validate it by reconstructing characteristic scattering patterns in vervet brain tissue, thereby demonstrating the feasibility of Compressed Sensing in ComSLI.ImPhys/Menzel grou

A Permselective CeOx Coating Improves the Stability of Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalysts

Highly active NiFeOx electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) suffer gradual deactivation with time due to the loss of Fe species from the active sites into solution during catalysis. Here, we describe the anodic deposition of a CeOx layer that prevents the loss of such Fe species from the OER catalysts, achieving a highly stable performance. The CeOx layer does not affect the OER activity of the catalyst underneath but exhibits unique permselectivity, allowing the permeation of OH- and O2 through while preventing the diffusion of redox ions through the layer to function as a selective O2-evolving electrode. The use of such permselective protective layer provides a new strategy for improving the durability of electrocatalysts. The research reported in this publication was supported by King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST).
