Towards a "Smart Heritage" as Future Diffused Museums: Design and Communication Technologies to Innovate the Experience of the Cultural Patrimony in Smart Cities

    No full text
This paper deals with the concept of designing a smart heritage, an approach that goes beyond the idea of ubiquitous or diffused museum by mixing both. In the big frame of smartness and smart cities, the museums of the future are outside the traditional museum walls and spread around in the whole visitors experience of a territory. The smart heritage can be intended as an intangible geography of cultural contents associated to tangible elements of a patrimony, that can be enabled, accessed, experienced, shared, by different technologies and communities of users in the real context or in remote. Design and communication play a crucial role in the innovation of this user experience, addressing issues like humanising and culturally connotating the interaction with the enabling technology, in order to get multi-layer experiences (from learning to entertainment, to cultural based services), inclusive and participative modalities of engagement and appropriation of the cultural knowledge and heritage. Starting from case studies analysis we’ll develop a theoretical model of smart heritage and design opportunities for future diffused museums, by mixing different types of technologies, modalities of interaction and users experiences. We propose a soft approach, meaning focused more on people relational values than hard technology infrastructures and platforms

Archives as new spaces for engaging experiences: Technologies and Languages within the Scenario of “Heritage Continuum”

    No full text
In the last five years, how we engage with cultural heritage has been changed immensely. Cultural institutions’, especially museums’ structure has moved from an “ownership of content” towards a permeable one, accumulating and diffusing information and knowledge, positioning heritage content inside a dynamic system, not only to communicate but to make “use value” for audiences. Within this scenario of cultural knowledge circulation, technologies have gained an important role as in creating tools to preserve and diffuse cultural heritage in digital environments. Today, new ways of archiving information have emerged both focusing on these recent digitalization processes and debating on open- access issues; however, as it will be discussed in detail later, this paper does not attempt to analyze archives within its “traditional” definition, but from a metaphoric point of view, introducing concepts of narration, performance and source of memory; thus, as a part of engagement strategies as a first step to discuss the possible future positioning of archives from a design research context. To this end, I will adopt a holistic approach, analyze diverse types of case studies (exploratory, descriptive and inspirational case studies), debating on one hand, the possibility of developing “active” archives within in these concepts focusing on how the archival material can be (re)used or produced, and on the other hand on the possibility to “open” archives as open-ended knowledge systems responding to the additive and accumulative nature of cultural heritage content and knowledge

    Shaping technology for intercultural interactions

As already mentioned in the previous chapters of this book, the primary aim of the MeLa experimental action was to investigate and a rm selected theoretical research goals positing the potential of digital and mobile tech- nologies to assist in establishing and supporting an intercultural dialogue in museums. Museo Diocesano’s action was focused on designing a visitor experience that enabled new ways of interaction: transforming the linear model of a museum visit into an active activity with multiple avenues for the visitor to experience content and encourage his or her participation. rough the use of a mobile platform, we hoped to open a dialogue, ena- bling contributions from visitors from di erent cultural backgrounds. On the one hand, the focus of these actions were, to test the feasibility of several concepts related to the application of various digital technologies. We were especially interested to investigate the technological capacity for video nar- rations and performative interaction by the user, and the e cacy of these tools for opening up di erent interpretations to the museum collection. On the other hand, this work also aimed to test user interfaces (UIs), gather information about possible software enabling AR technologies, and bring them into use in prototype applications in the museum setting. erefore the action at MuDi was designed with both of these goals in mind. ese steps in this process included tests for evaluating concepts, sessions with experts and specialists (e. g. art historians, theologians, museum cura- tors, etc.) to receive feedback, and prototyping of the nal application with general visitors attuned to multicultural exchange (e. g. immigrants, second generation immigrants and foreigners living in Milan). e Diocesan Museum was initially chosen because of the location and its collection. ese speci c experimental actions were then developed focus- ing on the collection in the hall of SS. Sacramento, a large atrium-like space with large paintings depicting various miracles related to the sacrament of the Eucharist. As described in detail in chapter three, the team chose this room for the experimental action because the dimensions of the room ena- bled interaction with the artworks on an accurate scale and the interesting themes of the paintings were conducive to multi-religious interpretations

According to the definitions of Interaction Design by experts in the field, it can be understood as an area that seeks to create effective relationships between users and the products, systems, or spaces that they interact with by designing an optimal experience through technology. Being in close collaboration with Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), IxD is quickly adapating to the diverse ways people interact with new technologies under diverse contexts, one of them being cultural and museum ones. Museums are open to the public institutions that research and safeguard cultural heritage. By focusing in providing good experiences to the public, how can a museum remain relevant in a fast-changing and technology-driven world? This is where new interactions are considered and one growing example that is implementing them are corporate and industrial museums sites. These institutions are not just an opportunity for companies to share their history, but to engage with audiences through new spaces and interactions. Italy, having one of the densest populations of museums in the world (Istituto Nazionale di Statistica, 2016), hosts one of the largest number of corporate museums (Nogare & Murzyn-Kupisz, 2024) due to its history of “Made in Italy” excellence. (Ettore, 2023). And with 2.600 Italian companies that are still operating and are over 100 years old, corporate museums are an opportunity on the rise. (Unioncamere, 2024) It is evident that there is a justified increment of this museum typology in the territory, but there are still areas of opportunity as to how companies can approach their target audiences through innovative and interactive methods and spaces. The following research seeks to understand and find opportunities in the interaction design field to intervene museum spaces and services with hybrid solutions to reach an increase in relevance and audience attention

The following thesis has been written and developed within the territories of Italy and Turkey; with a research of an additional country; Spain. "Hangisi" is born thanks to my internship experience in Milan, at the ROJO®artspace Milan, where I have driven my initial research towards the topic of art world, the problems of the artists on their early on in their career, and I have arrived to hypothesis of the need of creating an art community to built better and wider relationships. Through the primary and secondary research I have got a deeper understanding of how the art communications works, what are the responsibilities and duties of galleries, what are the main requirements of artists. And finally, how they are connected within this world. I have taken into consideration the artspace that I have worked, I have used it as a case study widening my research, and getting information also from the other headquarters of ROJO®artspace. Secondary research has been focused more on the design challenge, where I have made firstly a wider research, where I check the current innovative ideas on other fields; such as crafts, fashion and retails, going deeper to understand the basis of the e-commerce systems. The results of these researches have highlighted the actual relevance of the problem that I have had as a hypothesis, and I continued with a deeper research where I analyzed the current initiatives to create communities of design and create virtual art markets. The collection and the synthesis of the insights derived from the research phase has in the end leaded to the phase that I identify better the problem and foresee the design opportunity. The lack of an integration within the galleries and the artists, the problems to give a start to have a place within the art world, and the break down within the economies of art world are the main relevant problems. "Hangisi" is designed to give an effective solution to answer all the needs in the art world. The platform itself, represents besides its own identity also the identities of artists, gallerist and artlovers as the main actors of this world who need to have improvements in their every day lives to have a better connected, integrated art community. Hangisi is a virtual social networking platform for art that generates the solution that will improve the communication between these actors to built a new community where these actors, as the users of this platform gather together to support each other and sustain the art world

Reimagining archives: an investigation into novel experiences of archives towards heritage knowledge production and dissemination

I casi studio prendono in considerazione tre dinamiche: ‘Structural mechanisms’, ‘Institutional relationships’ e ‘Exhibitionary forms’ come dinamiche attuali nei progetti legati agli archivi. The three-year PhD research held in the research unit Design for Cultural Heritage (DeCH) at Politecnico di Milano is aimed at exploring the field of archives from a design point of view, in order to envision what kind of novel forms archives can take to enable engaging experiences for the public. Its emphasis lies both on investigating the relationship between institutions and public from a user-centric point of view and also deeply understanding the notion of archives today from an interdisciplinary perspective. The research is based on the initial hypothesis that by providing, first of all, an overview of both the changes in cultural heritage institutions, in particular, museums and adoption of digital technologies in the last decade, thus defining a phenomenological context for archives, there could be identified an area of shift towards enabling audience engagement and visibility. The case is that as today cultural heritage information is not stable, but in continuous change because of interaction among institutions and with the public, archives as a field needs to be redefined by taking in consideration both current changes in technology, and the needs and expectations of contemporary users. Moreover, digitisation is seen as a must-have activity for many institutions, but not all the digitised archival materials online are understandable and usable for general public because of materialistic approach brought into the communication of archival materials. Archival materials contain traces of historical and cultural knowledge, and these can be transferred into information and amplified by making connections among materials for the general public. These presuppositions are crucial for starting to talk about an ‘experience offer’ for archives and are defined in this research as the shift from an ‘open’ level (open to public use) to a 'living' level (in continuous growth and circulation). The research takes an interdisciplinary approach to the research domain with secondary research and uses case study as the main research strategy in order to respond to the complexity of the research focus. The case studies address ‘Structural mechanisms’, ‘Institutional relationships’ and ‘Exhibitionary forms’ as current dynamics to be taken in consideration in archive-related projects. The results are evaluated through interviews undertaken with experts from different backgrounds in order to be able to test the new terminology developed during the research. The thesis contributes a novel understanding of the ‘experiences’ of archives and provides conceptual information and practical insights in order to make a change in the approach of heritage institutions’ archive-related projects. The meta-design tool brings these dynamics and practical insights together and acts as a mean to support the design critique and design strategy activities of institutions, towards enabling audience-centric and engaging experiences for archives. The online platform reimaginingarchives.org communicates the research outcome emerged from the research and brings into practice how such tool may assist in designing novel experiences for archives.DIPARTIMENTO DI DESIGN29GUERRINI, LUCAGUERRINI, LUC

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
