Operational Tunnel Model Generation Using Reinforcement Learning
Reinforcement Learning (RL) has emerged as a promising approach to solve complex problems in many different domains, including the Architecture, Engineering, Construction and Operation (AECO) industry. RL is a type of machine learning that focuses on training an agent to interact with an environment in order to maximize a reward signal. In the AECO industry, RL has been used to optimize building design, construction planning and scheduling, and building energy management. This contribution presents an application of RL for the generation of an InfraBIM model of a tunnel built by mechanised excavation using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). In particular, the present application was developed to minimise the distance between the theoretical layout and the operational one to be executed by the TBM, considering the geometry of the ring and the structural joints required for the solidity of the structure. RL has the potential to improve efficiency, sustainability, and safety in the AECO industry by enabling intelligent decision-making and optimization across different phases of the construction process
Digital Models and natural language. New perspectives for interpreting complexity - Modelli digitali e linguaggio natural. Nuove prospettive per interpretare la complessità
New perspectives for interpreting complexity are now made possible by the collaboration between humans and artificial intelligence through large language models. This approach can enrich the narrative of construction and infrastructure works through tangible and comprehensible semantic representations that increase the accessibility of digital models to users in the field. The research explores using a chatbot as a possible cognitive interpretation tool to improve understanding and knowledge extraction from increasingly complex data systems. The study results describe and highlight the crucial role of the prototype in supporting the interrogation of graphical and alphanumeric information in OpenBIM format of critical infrastructure for management, maintenance and personnel training purposes
Technologies and techniques offering new interpretations of the landscape evolution
The need for specific documents in terms of environment and landscape has its origin in late eighties, when in Italy both at European and Regional
level several dispositions related to the improvement of the landscape quality came out to guarantee the compatibility of territorial transformations.
Within this traditional context, how innovative, mainly BIM-oriented, technologies can be useful in offering new ways of interpretation for the
landscape planning and safeguarding? The aim of the present work is to read and translate landscape elements using digital BIM-oriented platforms, in order to develop an optimized procedure to collect/organize/implement data and define guidelines for landscape and visual impact assessment; furthermore, the aim is to understand the limits that are still present within available tools. After having read the features of the territory another key point is the creation of digital parametric libraries to represent environmental mitigation works. As far as visual mitigation works are concerned, visibility analysis of the infrastructure is possible through Virtual and Mixed Reality. Once the modeling of specific components is performed, they can be located within the contextual model, where outputs related to the “whole” can be extracted and updated afterwards. New digital technologies and techniques undoubtedly offer new interpretation scenarios of the landscape evolution; nevertheless, there are still strong limits related to the interactions among these tools. The present work provides a valid methodology to involve landscape and urban planning in the BIM process. The research also proposes a series of BIM oriented tools and software to develop a typical output (landscape report) required during the design process, useful for landscape architects
BIM-based structural survey design
The study, which is part of the digitalization project of the public real estate portfolio of the City of Turin (TOBIM), explores the use of parametric structural models in organizing the knowledge and the data involved in the investigations and analysis on an existing building. The recommended approach exploits Building Information Modelling to set up a graphic and alphanumeric database of interoperable information that can be implemented throughout the building life cycle. Specifically, this paper promotes solutions focused on maximizing BIM data for structural survey design activities. The case study analyzed is a pavilion school complex of the 70s located in Turin
Hidden logic of complexity. Graphical interfaces and algorithms for the building system - Logiche nascoste della complessità.
Complexity theory provides an essential framework for analysing buildings as complex sys-tems, influenced by the interaction of architectural, structural and building services ele-ments. To manage this complexity, BIM methods and tools for Facility Management lever-age the language of drawing to represent the complexity of data and optimise its manage-ment. The analysis of more than three thousand rooms of the Piedmont Region Palace as a case study for this contribution demonstrates how algorithms and automatisms can fa-cilitate the management of large amounts of data to improve the visualisation and interpre-tation of information. This paper examines the value of graphical interfaces in revealing hidden logics of complexity and transforming them into resources available to users for a new decision support system
Horizontal and Vertical BIM Interoperability Aimed at Seismic Vulnerability Assessment
A vital task of this millennium is to protect the existing heritage, also through the adoption of resilient management systems. In this framework, the organization of knowledge remains one of the critical points. For this reason, new methodologies and cross-disciplinary technologies are increasingly being chosen to optimize resources toward more sustainable interventions. Therefore, the ability to model the building geometry and behavior must be maximized through interoperable processes between Building Information Modeling and Finite Element Modeling methods aimed at the seismic vulnerability assessment. Setting up an integrated digitalization process is undoubtedly challenging initially but returns more significant benefits during the infrastructure life cycle. The interoperability tests' bi-directionality is essential for constantly evaluating activities to update data following facilities' modifications. The Modal Assurance Criterion indicator is used to assess the coherence of the models after possible simplifications introduced for non-linear state analyses
