    Crisi e transizione: spunti per un’agenda di ricerca interdisciplinare

    Crisis and transition are frequently-used analytical categories in various sciences (hard, human and social ones), although with different heuristic potentials. We begin our itinerary with social sciences, looking for useful contaminations with other knowledge domains. The socio-economic events unfolding in Western countries in the last decade stand out for their higher discontinuity with existing paradigms and mainstream theories. Moreover, in a globalised and increasingly interdependent world, causality and strictly-meant experimental rigour become intrinsically more difficult to be pursued, while newer analytical approaches better dealing with complexity are needed. We review the main themes and challenges posed to economics and sociology, while focusing on the structural crisis and transition faced by the Italian economy and society, which have gradually become a weak partner in the EU. Face to the big societal challenges of the near future, an urgent quest for newer perspectives and socio-economic policies open to interdisciplinarity arises

    A Variational Algorithm for Quantum Single Layer Perceptron

    Hybrid quantum-classical computation represents one of the most promising approaches to deliver novel machine learning models capable of overcoming the limitations imposed by the classical computing paradigm. In this work, we propose a novel variational algorithm for quantum Single Layer Perceptron (qSLP) which allows producing a quantum state equivalent to the output of a classical single-layer neural network. In particular, the proposed qSLP generates an exponentially large number of parametrized linear combinations in superposition that can be learnt using quantum-classical optimization. As a consequence, the number of hidden neurons scales exponentially with the number of qubits and, thanks to the universal approximation theorem, our algorithm opens to the possibility of approximating any function on quantum computers. Thus, the proposed approach produces a model with substantial descriptive power and widens the horizon of potential applications using near-term quantum computation, especially those related to quantum machine learning. Finally, we test the qSLP as a classification model against two different quantum models on two different real-world datasets usually adopted for benchmarking classical algorithms

    Hybrid Quantum Technologies for Quantum Support Vector Machines

    Quantum computing has rapidly gained prominence for its unprecedented computational efficiency in solving specific problems when compared to classical computing counterparts. This surge in attention is particularly pronounced in the realm of quantum machine learning (QML) following a classical trend. Here we start with a comprehensive overview of the current state-of-the-art in Quantum Support Vector Machines (QSVMs). Subsequently, we analyze the limitations inherent in both annealing and gate-based techniques. To address these identified weaknesses, we propose a novel hybrid methodology that integrates aspects of both techniques, thereby mitigating several individual drawbacks while keeping the advantages. We provide a detailed presentation of the two components of our hybrid models, accompanied by the presentation of experimental results that corroborate the efficacy of the proposed architecture. These results pave the way for a more integrated paradigm in quantum machine learning and quantum computing at large, transcending traditional compartmentalization

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
