    Nature's Luminous Dreamscape: An illuminating organza sculpture eliciting an awe experience

    Awe, the feeling of encountering something greater or more powerful, has been explored in design and the arts. However, the potential of creating awe through the interplay of light and textiles remains underexplored. While the possibilities are vast, the precise tuning of their respective qualities to elicit a sense of awe over time have yet to be thoroughly investigated. This project aims at creating a light sculpture that elicits a visual awe experience by experimenting with interactions between the material organza and lighting.To start and give direction to the project, the Material Driven Design (MDD) method was used. Moreover, a literature review about awe, organza, light and light-material interactions was carried out. Besides, three separate experiments were conducted involving 22 participants in order to find which variables of organza and lighting would elicit what emotions, what rate of a visual awe experience and what meanings/associations by using an adapted version of the Experiential Characterization toolkit from the MDD method.The results of the three experiments showed that high-intensity red and blue lighting colours, a hole-patterned organza construction and the room's lighting turned off elicits the highest rating of the awe experience.The final light sculpture – made from organza with circular patterned holes, high-intensity red and blue lighting and projections of storytelling dynamic light textures – elicits a visual awe experience of different intensities during one loop of three light textures.The process of designing this installation serves as a case study demonstrating how the interplay of light and organza can evoke awe and enhance people's experiences, potentially leading to benefits such as increased state of focused attention and awareness on the present moment and improved psychological well-being.Integrated Product Desig

    Author Correction: Unveiling the underlying structure of awe in virtual reality and in autobiographical recall: an exploratory study

    Over the last two decades, awe has attracted the attention of an increasing number of researchers. The use of virtual reality has been identified as one of the most effective techniques for eliciting awe, in addition to more personalized methods for inducing emotion, such as autobiographical recall. However, previous measures of awe were unable to uncover the hidden structure of this experience. Awe experience scale (AWE-S) has been validated as a comprehensive measure of contingent awe in English, providing new opportunities for analysis. In this two-phases study, we investigated whether the latent structure of the experience of awe evoked by the autobiographical recall technique (Study 1) overlapped with that induced by exposing participants to a validated virtual reality awe-eliciting training (Study 2). The original English AWE-S structure held both in autobiographical recall induction and virtual reality-based elicitation. Despite evidence of overlap between English and Italian structures, low correlations were found between Italian trait measures used to test the concurrent validity of the AWE-S in the Italian sample and AWE-S state dimensions. This study highlights cultural differences in awe experience, trait, and state variations, and provides new insights into the standardized induction of this emotion through simulated environments

    The role of awe in psychedelic-assisted therapy: a phenomenological investigation

    There exists a vast and growing body of research on the therapeutic potential and mechanisms of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy; research shows that the quality of the subjective experience is integral for long-term therapeutic outcomes. The current study sought to investigate individuals’ experiences of awe during psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy in order to better understand its role in therapeutic mechanisms and outcomes. A phenomenological approach was used to obtain an in-depth account of the awe experience across nine individuals and semi-structured interview transcripts were analyzed using a well-established method for thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006). Several themes were found to capture individuals’ awe experiences, including participation (characterized by acts of surrender and a willingness to experience the unknown), vastness (feeling of being in the presence of something vast that defies current understanding), ego expansion (a shift in one’s sense of self to encompass greater interconnection), noetic quality (experiences endued with a deep sense of knowing or truth of reality), and effects (the immediate effects of the experience on the individual, including powerful emotional, cognitive, physiological, and sensory changes). These aspects of individuals’ psychedelic-mediated awe experiences were connected to a range of positive therapeutic outcomes, which were captured according to three major themes: mental health impacts of the experience, 2) the emergence of a new framework for experiencing or viewing oneself, others, or the world, and 3) increases in psychological flexibility. Participants’ accounts highlighted that these outcomes were sustained through an ongoing process of integration characterized by three main themes: 1) ongoing (referring to integration as a gradual and ongoing process), 2) meaning-making (referring to the process of accommodating, developing, and implementing the insights gained from the experience), and 3) communal (referring to the role of interpersonal and community support in the process of integration). This research demonstrates the centrality of the awe experience within the therapeutics of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy. It highlights the processes necessary for sustaining positive outcomes and incorporating the power of awe into everyday life

    Rare Event Prediction for Enhanced Control System Reliability of AWE Systems

    Reliable autonomous operation of Airborne Wind Energy (AWE) systems requires control algorithms that are able to attenuate the effect of stochastic disturbances on the control performance in continuously changing wind conditions. Assessing the stability and robustness of the control system is in general carried out using simplified system models where the real stochastic nature of the control problem is neglected. Therefore, a direct Monte Carlo approach is used in practice to increase the confidence in the control system’s reliability. However, this approach performs poorly if it is used to estimate the effect and the probability of rare events such as strong gusts. Statistically, these events are located at the tails of the underlying joint probability density function. Consequently, only a few samples leading to rare events can be identified in a reasonable amount of time which leads to a biased probability estimate.     Management of open achilles tendon injury: Primary repair and early mobilization

    Background: Achilles tendon injuries have progressive increase worldwide in the last few decades. This is attributable to increase in both competitive and recreational sports. In most of the literature written on Achilles tendon injuries there were rarely any information about open Achilles tendon lacerations. In fact, Achilles tendon injuries were erroneous equated to Achilles tendon ruptures and subsequently the management.Objective: To show that primary repair of open Achilles tendon lacerations (or incisions) and early postoperative mobilization in carefully selected patients may give excellent results.Methods: This was a prospective study that took place at the Plastic Surgery Unit of Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Edo State, Nigeria over a period of 5 years. There were 52 cases of open Achilles tendon injuries that presented but only 12 of them, with lacerations or incisions, had primary repair and early postoperative mobilization. The study was between February 2010 and January 2015. The exclusion criteria included: (i) Achilles tendon injuries like avulsions and crush injuries; (ii) Patients that presented later than six hours of injury; (iii) Patients who had other system injuries or co-morbidity. The following data were collected which include biodata, side involved, the aetiology and complications and then analyzed.Results: There were 12 cases that fit into this study. There were 5 males (41.7%) and 7 females (58.3%) with male: female ratio of about 2.5:1. The average age was 37.6 years (range 6-60 years). Forty one point seven percent of them were within the paediatric age group of 0-15 years while the rest were adults. The most common aetiology was motorbike spoke. Nine (75%) of the injuries were on the left side. Two patients had infection which resolved with oral antibiotics.Conclusion: Literature on open Achilles tendon injuries are sparse, however it is an important subset of Achilles tendon injuries. Primary repair and early post-operative mobilization in open uncomplicated Achilles tendon lacerations or incisions gives excellent results.Key words: Open, Achilles tendon, Lacerations, Primary repair, Complication

    Web engineering security: essential elements

    Security is an elusive target in today’s high-speed and extremely complex, Web enabled, information rich business environment. This paper presents the idea that there are essential, basic organizational elements that need to be identified, defined and addressed before examining security aspects of a Web Engineering Development process. These elements are derived from empirical evidence based on a Web survey and supporting literature. This paper makes two contributions. The first contribution is the identification of the Web Engineering specific elements that need to be acknowledged and resolved prior to the assessment of a Web Engineering process from a security perspective. The second contribution is that these elements can be used to help guide Security Improvement Initiatives in Web Engineering

    About the Book Shock and Awe Inspired by the foreign policy entanglements of recent years, William V. Spanos offers a dramatic interpretation of Twain\u27s classic A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur\u27s Court, providing a fresh assessment of American exceptionalism and the place of a global America in the American imaginary. Spanos insists that Twain identifies with his protagonist, particularly in his defining use of the spectacle, and thus with an American exceptionalism that uncannily anticipates the George W. Bush administration\u27s normalization of the state of exception and the imperial policy of preemptive war, unilateral regime change, and shock and awe tactics. Equally stimulating is Spanos\u27s thoroughly original ontology of American exceptionalism and imperialism and his tracing of these forces, through a chronological examination of Twain studies and criticism over the past century.
