Aid: a mixed blessing
Despite a growing emphasis by aid agencies on local participation and consultation, the recipients of aid commonly have mixed, if not hostile, responses to relief assistance. Agencies need to acknowledge the inequalities that are inherent in an aid relationship, and be more judicious in determining their proper role. The author calls for aid providers and recipients to accept our innate human equality and our circumstantial inequality in order to establish relationships of mutual respect and contemporaneous enjoyment of each other. This article is hosted by our co-publisher Taylor & Francis.</p

SimQuest, Authoring educational simulations
Joolingen, W.R. van, & Jong, T.de (2003). SimQuest, authoring educational simulations. In: T. Murray, S. Blessing, S. Ainsworth: Authoring Tools for Advanced Technology Learning Environments: Toward cost-effective adaptive, interactive, and intelligent educational software. pp. 1-31. Dordrecht: Kluwer.SIMQUEST is an authoring system for creating computer simulations embedded in an instructional environment. A typical learning environment created with SIMQUEST allows learners to engage in an activity of discovery learning with a simulation, supported by instructional measures from within the environment. Some of these instructional measures adapt themselves to the interaction of the learner with the simulation. SIMQUEST allows the author to create various kinds of instructional support for the learner. Assignments provide the learner with short term goals for the learning process, explanations offer additional information, a monitoring tool allows the learner to record and replay experiments, and, moreover, the domain can be arranged according to different levels of model progression. Recent developments are a hypothesis scratchpad, intelligent feedback, a modelling tool, and facilities for collaborative learning in SIMQUEST. SIMQUEST supports the full process of authoring simulation based learning environments, from creating the simulation model to defining the instructional interaction of the learning environment with the learner. Authoring a SIMQUEST learning environment is done in an object oriented way. The author selects templates from a library to create building blocks of the learning environment, which are then edited to match the author's requirements. The SIMQUEST architecture, with a simulation context as central element takes care of the interaction between the various building blocks. The author is supported by the contents of the library, on-line help, on-line pedagogical advice, and a wizard that can automate part of the authoring process. SIMQUEST has been used to create about twenty learning environments, some of which have been evaluated extensively with students. Currently SIMQUEST is used by a group of teachers to create learning material for use in their classrooms. A number of SIMQUEST learning environments are now published by commercial publishers
Ubiquitous Technology in Healthcare and Teaching-Learning: Scourge or Blessing?
The author in this article introduces a discussion of one school of nursing’s efforts integrating telehealth education into undergraduate and graduate curricula using King’s theory of goal attainment as a guide. The introduction shares a story of loss in a rural setting without access to quality healthcare to highlight the blessing technology may be. However, challenges are discussed that arise through the ubiquitous use of technology in person-to-person communication and relationships. </jats:p
The Absence and Influence of Genesis 48 (the Blessing of Ephraim and Manasseh) in the Book of Jubilees
While scholars have acknowledged the literary dependence of Jubilees 31 (the blessing of Levi and Judah) on Genesis 48 (the blessing of Ephraim and Manasseh), little work has been done to understand the purpose of this intentional intertextuality. This article examines the literary influence of Genesis 48, the effect of its absence, and the altered roles of Levi, Judah, and Joseph in Jubilees in order to determine why the author made the literary decision to pattern one scene of blessing after the other. This article suggests that the author's decision to omit Genesis 48 and to present not one but two similar scenes of blessing in its place is part of a larger strategy to negotiate the interpretive problem of the prominent status given to Joseph's sons in Genesis 48. By replacing Ephraim and Manasseh with Levi and Judah, but allowing Joseph to receive the double portion of land, the author of Jubilees reflects an interpretive tradition, also found in the Targums, Genesis Rabbah, and the Testaments of the Patriarchs, that understands the inheritance of Jacob to be threefold and distributed three ways—the birthright to Joseph, the priesthood to Levi, and the kingship to Judah. </jats:p

Rite of blessing of the fields in the legislation of the Latin Church
W artykule omówiono następujące zagadnienia szczegółowe dotyczące obrzędu błogosławieństwa pól w Kościele łacińskim: geneza obrzędu błogosławieństwa pól, podstawy dogmatyczno-prawne obrzędu błogosławieństwa pól i struktura obrzędów błogosławieństwa pól. Obrzęd ten dobrze przygotowany od strony duszpasterskiej może przynieść piękne owoce duchowe. The blessing of the fields (land) combines in itself a particular praising of God for graces granted, with a petition for the harvest of the fields. A blessing is a calling of protection on persons, things, places, and is the action of God, by which He testifies his own special help-grace. In a broader sense of the term it signifies prosperity, good fortune, the good, which is asked from God.
The current rite of blessing of the fields is found in liturgical book, Rites of Blessings adapted to customs of Polish dioceses. In this article the author seeks an answer to the question, „What is the meaning of this rite in the ministry of today?” It is necessary to point out that it is a very important ritual in the Church. The Church from the very beginning has emphasized the importance of blessings in the life of the Faithful.
In the present article will be discussed the following specific questions concerning the blessing of fields in the Latin rite Church: the origins of the blessing of fields; the dogmatic-canonical foundations of the rite of blessing of the fields; and the structure of rites of blessing the fields. This ritual, when well-prepared pastorally, can bear beautiful spiritual fruit
The Rhetoric of Community Ritual: The Blessing of the Shrimp Fleet at Chauvin, Louisiana.
This study examines the rhetorical functions of a community ritual, the blessing of the shrimp fleet at Chauvin, Louisiana. Chauvin is a Cajun community in south Louisiana. Their annual fleet blessing was instituted in the 1930\u27s and continues today relatively unchanged. The author observed the preparations and performance of the blessing and boat parade and also interviewed community members about the blessing. The observations and interview transcriptions are the primary data used for analysis of the community discourse. Fantasy theme analysis is used to demonstrate the community\u27s use of discourse to develop and maintain group hierarchy. The discourse reveals six fantasy themes prevalent in the discourse of the people of Chauvin. The six--unity, security, perpetuation, pride, care-taking, and pioneering--are traits attributed to the shrimpers whose profession is blessed by the ritual. The fantasy themes chain into a rhetorical vision that reinforces the perception that the shrimpers are heroes. Their success or failure determines the economic status of the entire community. Thus they are crusaders whose quest is to defeat the community\u27s fears and enemies to ensure economic stability. The discourse about the blessing reveals four communal fears: loss of land, of business, of religious roots, and of cultural identification. Fantasy theme analysis permits the researcher to investigate how these fears pressure the group, and how discourse about the blessing spawns new fantasy themes that group members can use to adapt to the pressures. Similarly, villains such as intrusive outsiders, non-participating insiders, and the forces of nature are revealed through the discourse. This study shows how the discourse of the blessing of the shrimp fleet unites the Cajuns of Chauvin in combating their fears and their villainous foes. Through the ritual the members of this community continue to reaffirm their Acadian culture and identity in the face of internal and external pressures to conform to mainstream American social values. Eventually, the community members will have to fend off encroachments more aggressively. Fantasy theme analysis reveals that the community members currently lack verbal strategies to help them address the increasing pressures directly
Love, blessing and betrayal
The idea behind this work is to present love, blessing and betrayal as the main themes of the 13th Chapter in the Gospel of St John. The aim, which was to present the theological conclusions obtainable from St John’s recount of the Last Supper, was completed through the analysis of John 13:1-30, by the help of Hebrew biblical rhetoric. This method, which mainly focuses on revealing the relation between smaller units of the text, making up the whole text, helps to develop the understanding of the message, which the author of the last Gospel wished to convey to the reader.
This work has been presented in the form of three chapters, the first of which was dedicated to the overall structure of the text, aswell as the analysis of its smaller units. Delimitation, which is the first stage, made it possible to obtain the sequence from the 13th Chapter of John’s Gospel, contained in verses 1-30. The next division pointed towards seven parts, forming 3 fragments, of which the dependence was described in the second paragraph. In the final paragraph, the entirety of the text was depicted and appropriate titles were assigned to the fragments composed, on the basis of the general topics they mention and describe.
The research conducted, enabled the extraction of essential expressions and ideas, which functioned as a starting point to compare them with the parts of the Bible, in which they appear. The biblical context was an essential stage of the analysis, which lead interpreting the parts described in the first chapter.
The 3rd and final Chapter was dedicated to the theological conclusions present in the three major themes of the sequence, such as love, blessing and betrayal. Individual paragraphs point to the meaning of love and blessing in the context of the Old and New Testaments, and portray Judas, as the one who betrayed Jesus. The conclusion of each paragraph ended with a sub-section showing the impact of these three concepts on the theology of the analyzed unit.Celem artykułu było ukazanie miłości, błogosławieństwa i zdrady jako głównych tematów 13. rozdziału Ewangelii Jana. Cel, jakim było przedstawienie wniosków teologicznych wypływających z Janowego opisu Ostatniej Wieczerzy, został zrealizowany poprzez analizę tekstu J 13,1-30 za pomocą hebrajskiej retoryki biblijnej. Metoda retoryczna, która skupia się przede wszystkim na wskazaniu relacji wewnątrz opracowywanego tekstu i między mniejszymi jednostkami, tworzącymi całościową kompozycję tekstu, pomaga pogłębić przesłanie, jakie autor ostatniej Ewangelii pragnął przekazać czytelnikowi.
Praca nad tekstem została przedstawiona w trzech syntetycznych punktach.
Punkt trzeci w całości poświęcony został wnioskom teologicznym zawartym w trzech głównych tematach sekwencji, tj. miłości, błogosławieństwu i zdradzie.
