    Modelling of orthogonal cutting of stainless steel using carbide tool

    Machine elements with cylindrical shapes in equipment like hydraulic jacks are bound to fail in operations due to craters formed on their surfaces. The surface finish of machined workpiece is determined by the possibilities of minimizing surface roughness. Although the absolute value of the average surface roughness has been the focus of experimental investigations yet it cannot provide all the information regarding the surface texture. The aim is to develop suitable models for the prediction of responses from orthogonal metal cutting process and the purpose is to provide a framework that can serve as guide for indigenous machinist. Box-Behnken design based on Response Surface Methodology was adopted for the experiment which was carried out on a ENC centre lathe machining centre. Non-linear quadratic regression models were developed based on the set machining parameters and their lack-of-fit test was carried out at 0.05 level of  significance.Keywords: Orthogonal Metal Cutting; Surface Roughness; Tool-life; Surface Finish; Machining Tim

    DEVELOPMENTAL PROGRAMMES AND POLICIES: A LOGIC MODEL APPROACH

    Drawing on a review of developmental policies and programmes since post-independence era, the programme logic model (PLM) is accepted as a framework for addressing the research aim, which is to develop a framework for the developmental future of Nigeria. A Logic Model based 6-way heuristic evaluation framework featuring: problems/issues, stakeholders’ needs/assets, desired results, influential factors, strategies, and assumptions, were developed. This approachprovided a schematic play-out of the feasibility of the evaluated programmes, and weights were assigned to the proposed strategies and their respective expected outcomes by target respondents and Bayes’ theorem was applied to the respondents’ scores.The findings showed that the strategies for a modest growth in the agricultural sector are provision of incentives for cash crops farming, institutionalising of agricultural practices and re-introduction of agricultural insurance scheme. The current contribution of the agricultural sector to the total GDP is approximately 23.86%. A modest and continuous increase can be expected if the proposed three strategies are implemented on a 3-4-3 basis. The strategies for a modest growth in the manufacturing sector are hastening the development of the infrastructure master plan and public private partnership with successful primary sector players. The current contribution of the manufacturing sector to the total GDP is approximately 4.1%. A modest and continuous increase can be expected if the proposed two strategies are implemented on a 4-6 basis. The strategies for a modest growth in the education sector are core implementation of science and technology based educational policies and innovation and management. The current contribution of the education sector to the total GDP is approximately 3.58%. The implication, therefore, is that there is urgent need to encourage ‘productive’ infrastructural development, which will jump start a knowledge based economy in the medium-term, and a serviced based economy in the long-term

    Application of lean manufacturing technology in a milk manufacturing company

    This work presents the application of lean management principle in the area of waste elimination in a powder milk plant of a production company. The existing manufacturing procedure for the company’s plant was evaluated, and a lean manufacturing technique was developed for the plant. To achieve this, a time series analysis was carried out on the econometric data obtained, and a future forecast predicting losses and usage was predicted based on the practised manufacturing procedures. The econo­metric linear transfer function technique applied to the actual usage and actual loss data obtained filtered the waste in the production process and generated forecast values for actual loss and usage.   This revealed that there had been poor manufacturing practices in the factory. The findings from this research can be used as a guide to managers on wastage control in a production system

    An Assessment of Solid Waste Transportation in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area, Ogun State, Nigeria

    This paper examines solid waste transportation in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State. Adequate transportation of solid waste is one of the major challenges of waste managers in Nigeria because of inherent factors ranging from dearth of transport infrastructure to poor attitude of residents. Data were collected through the aid of questionnaires, personal observations, visitations to some villages and towns as well as dumpsites. The questionnaires were divided into two parts: household respondents and solid waste management staff. The data obtained were analyzed using Descriptive Statistics, Factor Analysis and Item Analysis. From the analysis of the data obtained from household and waste management respondents the mean and standard deviation reflect high degree of correlation and concurrence. From the principal component analysis of both the household respondents and waste management staff, there are two principal factors respectively that should be given higher consideration in solid waste management in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area. These factors include waste collection and disposal method, frequency of collection and reliability of waste vehicles. Based on these findings, the study concluded that attitudinal change on the part of the household, government intervention on road maintenances, and adequate maintenance of PSP vehicles will go a long way in reducing the heaps of refuse and indiscriminate dumping of solid wastes in the entire vicinity of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area in Ogun State, Nigeria

    Effect of initial quenching temperature on the hardness of AA6061 aluminium alloy and C18200 copper alloy

    This study presents a quantitative investigation of the quench sensitivity of AA6061 aluminium and C18200 copper alloys under controlled water and oil quenching across an initial temperature range of 20–80?°C. Specimens were solution-treated according to ASM-recommended procedures, followed by rapid transfer to agitated quench baths to ensure turbulent cooling. Brinell hardness measurements revealed that aluminium exhibited a pronounced decrease in hardness with increasing quench temperature, while copper showed comparatively minor changes. The Quench Sensitivity Index (QSI), calculated as the hardness loss per degree Celsius, confirmed aluminium’s higher practical sensitivity (0.283–0.405?HB/°C) relative to copper (0.152–0.183?HB/°C). Statistical analysis using ANOVA indicated that temperature effects were highly significant (p?&lt;?0.001) for all alloy–medium combinations. Ordinary least squares regression models demonstrated strong linear relationships between hardness and quench temperature (R²?&gt;?0.90), enabling predictive capability. Metallurgical interpretations attribute aluminium’s sensitivity to precipitation kinetics and solute supersaturation, whereas copper’s low sensitivity reflects its high thermal diffusivity. The findings emphasize the critical importance of precise quench temperature control for aluminium alloys to maximize mechanical performance, while copper alloys allow more flexible processing. Overall, the study provides a robust framework for optimizing industrial quench processes in aluminium and copper components
