Extended Coleman–Noll procedure and thermodynamics of viscoelastic solids revisited
In the classical Coleman–Noll approach
to the exploitation of second law of thermodynamics,
the balance laws of mass, linear momentum and
energy are regarded as differential bilateral constraints
to be included in the entropy inequality. In
recent years, the classical Coleman–Noll procedure
has been generalized by considering also the gradients
of the fundamental balance equations as constraints
in the entropy inequality. In the present paper,
a generalized Coleman–Noll procedure is applied to
analyze viscoelastic solids with and without relaxation
of the heat flux. It is proved that the relaxation of
the heat flux does not ensure the hyperbolicity of the
system of balance laws. An overview of the generalized
exploitation procedures is provided as well
Operatorial Formulation of a Model of Spatially Distributed Competing Populations
This paper deals with the application of the mathematical apparatus of quantum mechanics for the formulation of an operatorial model of a couple of populations spatially distributed over a one-dimensional region. The two populations interact with a competitive mechanism and are able to diffuse over the region. A nonlocal competition effect is also included. In more detail, we consider a one-dimensional region divided in N cells where the actors, represented by annihilation, creation, and a number fermionic operators, interact. The dynamics is governed by a self-adjoint and time-independent Hamiltonian operator describing the various interactions. The results of some numerical simulations are presented and discussed. The recently introduced variant of the standard Heisenberg approach, named (H,ρ)-induced dynamics, is also used in order to take into account some changes in time of the attitudes of the two populations, and obtain more realistic dynamical outcomes
On an Inverse Problem in Group Analysis of PDE's: Lie--Remarkable Equations
Within the framework of inverse Lie problems we give some nontrivial examples of Lie remarkable equations, i.e., classes of partial differential equations that are in onetoone correspondence with their Lie point symmetries. In particular, we prove that the second order Monge-Ampere equation in two independent variables is Lie remarkable. The same property is shared by some classes of second order Monge-Ampere equations involving more than two independent variables, as well as by some classes of higher order Monge-Ampere equations in two independent variables. In closing, also the minimal surface equation in R^3 is
considered
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
On differential equations characterized by their Lie point symmetries
AbstractWe study the geometry of differential equations determined uniquely by their point symmetries, that we call Lie remarkable. We determine necessary and sufficient conditions for a differential equation to be Lie remarkable. Furthermore, we see how, in some cases, Lie remarkability is related to the existence of invariant solutions. We apply our results to minimal submanifold equations and to Monge–Ampère equations in two independent variables of various orders
Market Behavior and Evolution of Wealth Distribution: A Simulation Model Based on Artificial Agents
The aim of this work is to simulate a market behavior in order to study the evolution of wealth distribution. The numerical simulations are carried out on a simple economical model with a finite number of economic agents, which are able to exchange goods/services and money; the various agents interact each other by means of random exchanges. The model is micro founded, self-consistent, and predictive. Despite the simplicity of the model, the simulations show a complex and non-trivial behavior. First of all, we are able to recognize two solution classes, namely two phases, separated by a threshold region. The analysis of the wealth distribution of the model agents, in the threshold region, shows functional forms resembling empirical quantitative studies of the probability distributions of wealth and income in the United Kingdom and the United States. Furthermore, the decile distribution of the population wealth of the simulated model, in the threshold region, overlaps in a suggestive way with the real data of the Italian population wealth in the last few years. Finally, the results of the simulated model allow us to draw important considerations for designing effective policies for economic and human development
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
