Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Control of mitosis by phytochrome and a blue-light receptor in fern spores
The first mitosis in spores of the fern A. capillus-veneris was observed under a microscope equipped with Nomarski optics with irradiation from a safelight at 900 nm, and under a fluorescent microscope after staining with 4[prime],6-diamidino-2-phenylindole. During imbibition the nucleus remained near one corner of each tetrahedron-shaped dormant spore, and asymmetric cell division occurred upon brief irradiation with red light. This red light-induced mitosis was photoreversibly prevented by subsequent brief exposure to far-red light and was photo-irreversibly prevented by brief irradiation with blue light. However, neither far-red nor blue light affected the germination rate when spores were irradiated after the first mitosis. Therefore, the first mitosis in the spores appears to be the crucial step for photoinduction of spore germination. Furthermore, experiments using a microbeam of red or blue light demonstrated that blue light was effective only when exposed to the nucleus, and no specific intracellular photoreceptive site for red light was found in the spores. Therefore, phytochrome in the far-red absorbing form induces the first mitosis in germinating spores but prevents the subsequent mitosis in protonemata, whereas a blue-light receptor prevents the former but induces the latte
Characterization of ZnTe homo-epitaxial layers by means of synchrotron X-ray topography
Synchrotron X-ray reflection topography was used to evaluate the crystal quality of a ZnTe epilayer grown by MOVPE on a low dislocation density (111) ZnTe substrate. The epilayer thicknesses were 0.35 μm and 3.0 μm, and the growth temperature was 325°C or 350°C. Another specimen whose epilayer was grown at 400°C with 3.0 μm thickness had a 0.35 μm thick buffer layer grown at 325°C. Reflection topographs and rocking curves were recorded from four equivalent 224 reflections using an X-ray wavelength of 0.1578 nm. Topographs of specimens with the epilayer grown at 325°C and 350°C did not show images of line defects, such as misfit dislocations. However, we could observe line images in the specimen with the epilayer grown at 400°C and with the buffer layer grown at 325°C. The line images were not observed in transmitted X-ray Laue topographs using a white X-ray beam. Therefore, it was concluded that the line defects existed in the epilayer and not the substrate. In addition, topographs taken with other diffraction planes showed the same images except for reversed image contrast. Therefore, the defects did not have characteristic strain fields such as for dislocations, and they are stacking faults grown in the epilayer during high temperature growth
Development of a methodology for evaluating spaceborne W-band Doppler radar by combined use of Micro Rain Radar and a disdrometer in Antarctica
Ground-based snowfall observations over Antarctica are rare due to the harsh environment and high logistical, equipment maintenance, and operational costs. Satellite measurements are crucial to provide continent-wide precipitation estimates, and this highlights the importance of validating the satellite estimates with measurements collected by ground-based Antarctic stations. The NASA CloudSat satellite, launched in 2006, is equipped with a 94 GHz (W-band) Cloud Profiling Radar (CPR) that provides measurements of reflectivity profiles of clouds and precipitation, whereas the incoming ESA/JAXA EarthCARE mission will add Doppler capability to a 94 GHz radar. This study explores how the synergy between two instruments available at most Antarctic stations, i.e., Micro Rain Radar (24 GHz, K-band) and laser disdrometer, can be used to validate satellite-borne W-band radar measurements, including Doppler estimates. A new validation methodology (K2W) was proposed to combine these instruments for simulating the 94 GHz reflectivity and Doppler measurements from Micro Rain Radar spectra. Assessment of the proposed K2W conversion methodology showed that the CloudSat Ze profiles can be simulated by the method with 0.2 dB mean difference at the lowest satellite radar range bin when time lag within ±12.5 min and the distance within 25 km around the CloudSat overpass were considered. With the K2W method, the 94 GHz Doppler velocity below 1 km altitude that would be observed by EarthCARE was obtained, and the standard deviation of the simulated Doppler velocity was found to be smaller than about 0.2 m s−1. The simulated 94 GHz Doppler radar profile information, which is less affected by attenuation compared to groundbased 94 GHz radar, will significantly improve the quantification of precipitation over Antarctica. This methodology will be applied to further assess the EarthCARE CPR Doppler velocity measurement accuracy as well as the Level 2 standard products for precipitation in Antarctica and at many other ground observation sites
Grazing incident X-ray topographs of heteroepitaxial ZnSe films on GaAs substrates
Surface reflection topographs of heteroepitaxial ZnSe films on GaAs substrates were obtained using grazing incident synchrotron X-ray radiation. The topographs indicated that diffraction occurred only in the ZnSe epilayer because no misfit dislocations within the interface were visible. Furthermore, the lattice perfection of the ZnSe epilayer was lower than that of the GaAs substrate, although strain relaxation arose due to the nucleation of misfit dislocations
