Introducing mesoscopic information into constitutive equations for arterial walls

    No full text
We propose a new elastic constitutive law for arterial tissue in which the limiting polymeric chain extensibility of both collagen and elastin fibres is accounted for. The elastic strain-energy function is separated additively into two parts: an isotropic contribution associated with the matrix (incorporating the elastin fibre network) and an anisotropic one associated with the collagen fibres. Information on the limiting extensibility in each case provides some mesoscopic input into the model. The (logarithm-based) model is compared with the Fung-Demiray exponential model and certain other recently proposed models. Some aspects of the elastic response under extension and inflation of a thin-walled circular cylindrical tube (the artery) are then examined and compared with the corresponding response of a rubberlike tube. We point out that our model, when both isotropic and anisotropic terms are included, can be developed to accommodate changing mechanical properties associated with degradation of the elastin and collagen by considering the material constants that define the limit of chain extensibility to evolve in time

On the ABAQUS FEA model of finite viscoelasticity

Predictions of the QLV (Quasi-Linear Viscoelastic) constitutive law are compared with those of the ABAQUS viscoelastic model for two simple motions in order to highlight, in particular, their very different dissipation rates and certain shortcomings of the ABAQUS model

Bending control and stability of functionally graded dielectric elastomers

A rectangular plate of dielectric elastomer exhibiting gradients of material properties through its thickness will deform inhomogeneously when a potential difference is applied to compliant electrodes on its major surfaces, because each plane parallel to the major surfaces will expand or contract to a different extent. Here we study the voltage-induced bending response of a functionally graded dielectric plate on the basis of the nonlinear theory of electroelasticity, when both the elastic shear modulus and the electric permittivity change with the thickness coordinate. The theory is illustrated for a neo-Hookean electroelastic energy function with the shear modulus and permittivity varying linearly across the thickness. In general the bending angle increases with the potential difference, and this enables the material inhomogeneity to be tuned to control the bending shape. We derive the Hessian criterion that ensures stability of the bent configurations in respect of a general form of electroelastic constitutive law specialized for the considered geometry. This requires that the Hessian remains positive. For the considered model we show that the bent configuration is stable until the voltage reaches the value for which the cross section of the bent configuration forms a complete circle

On helical shear of a compressible elastic circular cylindrical tube

    No full text
In this paper we examine the combined azimuthal and axial shear of a compressible isotropic elastic circular cylindrical tube of finite extent, otherwise referred to as helical shear (which is an isochoric deformation). The equilibrium equations are formulated in terms of the principal stretches, and explicit necessary and sufficient conditions on the strain-energy function for the material to support this deformation are obtained and compared with those obtained previously for this problem. Several classes of strain-energy functions are derived and in some general cases complete solutions of the equilibrium equations are obtained. Existing results are recovered as special cases and some new results for the strain-energy functions derived are determined and discussed

On extension and torsion of a compressible elastic circular cylinder

    No full text
In this paper we examine the combined extension and torsion of a compressible isotropic elastic cylinder of finite extent. The equilibrium equations are formulated in terms of the principal stretches and then applied to the special case of pure torsion superimposed on a uniform extension (an isochoric deformation). Explicit necessary and sufficient conditions on the strain-energy function for the material to support this deformation with vanishing traction on the lateral surfaces of the cylinder are obtained. Some strain-energy functions satisfying these conditions are considered, existing results are recovered as special cases and new results are obtained. We also point out how the strain-energy functions generated from the considered isochoric deformation considered (of a compressible material) can be used to generate energy functions and corresponding solutions for the incompressible theory

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
