Self-Efficacy and Gender as Correlates of Senior Secondary School Students’ Academic Achievement in English Reading Comprehension in Ondo State, Nigeria
This study examined self-efficacy and gender as correlates of senior secondary school students’ academic achievement in English reading comprehension in Ondo State, Nigeria. Employing a descriptive correlational design, data were collected from Senior Secondary 2 (SS2) students using a self-efficacy questionnaire and a standardised reading comprehension achievement test. A multi-stage sampling technique was employed. In the first stage, the state was divided into three strata based on its senatorial districts. In the second stage, one local government area was randomly selected from each stratum. At the third stage, one public secondary school was purposively selected from each of the identified local government areas, resulting in a total of three schools. At the end of the selection, 76 students—38 males and 38 females—participated in the study. Analysis through SPSS software included t-tests analysis to assess the impact of self-efficacy on reading comprehension and to explore gender differences in performance. Findings show a significant relationship between self-efficacy and academic achievement. Additionally, while female students scored slightly higher than their male counterparts, the difference was not statistically significant. These findings emphasize the importance of self-efficacy in student achievement. Consequently, it is recommended that teachers incorporate strategies to enhance students’ self-efficacy, such as positive reinforcement, setting achievable goals, and creating opportunities for mastery experiences to support better academic achievement
Representations of migrant and nation in selected works of Rohinton Mistry and Salman Rushdie
This thesis explores the representations of, and the relationship between. the migrant and the nation in selected works of the Bombay-born novelists Rohinton Mistry and Salman Rushdie. I explore each writer's engagement with contemporary debates surrounding the material, political, social and imaginative consequences of the crisis in secularism in India during the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, and consider how this engagement is informed by their
migrant positions beyond India's borders. A primary concern is the way in which Mistry's and Rushdie's representations of the nation, and of migrant and diasporic subjects, intersects with the representation of Bombay in their work.
This thesis is divided into five chapters. The first two chapters concentrate on Mistry's fiction, the remaining three on Rushdie's work. Published between 1988 and 2002, the central novels examined are situated within debates regarding the founding principles of the Indian nation, and notions of Indianness, the rise of communalism in general and Hindu nationalism in particular, and the renaming of Bombay as Mumbai. My readings foreground the necessity of a
close understanding of the historical and political transformations taking place within Bombay and India during the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, but also during the 1950s and 1960s. I argue that Mistry's and Rushdie's work is informed by a deepening anxiety over these socio-political transformations, and over how reconfigurations of Indianness increasingly position minority communities, and migrant and diasporic subjects, outside of definitions of national identity.
This anxiety extends into the negotiation of their own migrant positions. My reading of the differing representations of the migrant in Mistry's and Rushdie's work engages with ideas of accountability, political responsibility, and with notions of cosmopolitanism. In doing so, I question familiar assumptions regarding the migrant condition as one of predominantly empowering political agency. I argue that, while both authors emphasise the importance of the migrant sustaining a critical engagement with India's politics, they also foreground the anxious difficulties of doing so. This difficulty informs Mistry's and Rushdie's divergent negotiation of their own position as migrant writers, and I examine how their fiction is marked by an anxiety over the adequacy of writing as a mode of political engagement with the crisis in secularism and the parochialisation of Bombay, and as a means of negotiating the politics of migrancy
Situating women: gender politics and circumstance in Fiji
Since the time of decolonisation in Fiji, women’s organisations have navigated a complex political terrain. While they have stayed true to the aim of advancing women’s status, their work has been buffeted by national political upheavals and changing global and regional directions in development policy-making. This book documents how women activists have understood and responded to these challenges. It is the first book to write women into Fiji’s postcolonial history, providing a detailed historical account of that country’s gender politics across four tumultuous decades. It is also the first to examine the ‘situated’ nature of gender advocacy in the Pacific Islands more broadly. It does this by analysing trends in activity, from women’s radical and provocative activism of the 1960s to a more self-evaluative and reflexive mood of engagement in later decades, showing how interplaying global and local factors can shape women’s understandings of gender justice and their pursuit of that goal. Enteral Nutrition in the Critically Ill. A Mixed-methods Study of Adherence to Evidence-Based Protocols, Nursing Responsibility and Teamwork
Objectives: this study aimed to assess nurses’ practice and perception of their knowledge, responsibility and documentation in relation to enteral nutrition in the critically ill and to explore nurses’ attitudes towards establishing evidence-based practice and teamwork in three health care sectors in Jordan.
Background: poor nursing adherence to evidence-based guidelines has negative consequences leading to higher mortality rates, delayed recovery and longer length of stay. Evidence-based practice and team working is the key to minimising complications and discrepancies between nurses.
Design and methods: mixed-methods strategies were employed. A cluster randomised sample recruited 253 ICU nurse for the survey. Fourteen nurses were selected purposively for the interviews and fifty five patients were involved in bedside observations. Both statistical and thematic analysis findings were integrated and discussed together.
Results: Nurses revealed a tendency to undertake nutritional care despite the recognition clinical nutrition is a secondary role. In terms of nursing processes, nurses showed greater levels of knowledge and responsibility for ‘preventing complications’ and ‘evaluation’ more than ‘assessment’ and ‘identifying goals’. However, female nurses scored higher in taking responsibility for ‘assessment’ and ‘planning’ than male nurses. The internet and clinical experience were the most effective sources of knowledge along with university education and colleagues.
Nurses showed inconsistency in assessment tasks such as controlling gastric residual volume and confirming tube placements. Diarrhoea was the most frequent complication followed by abdominal pain, vomiting, tube dislodgment, weight loss. However, nurses realised that the incidences of complications is less likely when applying such evidence-based protocol for enteral nutrition.
Multidisciplinary team work was introduced as a source of evidence-based practice and establishing a nutritional team contributes to a greater nursing involvement in decision making. Poor cooperation and interaction within the team prohibits standardized care and increases the imparity in nursing practice.
Conclusion: increased nursing awareness of nutritional assessment through providing training programs and surveillance of clinical performance is necessary. Management should be concerned with offering an accessible source of knowledge, the required equipment and documentation systems. Enhancing collaboration between health care providers and offering appropriate counselling should also be emphasized
Prevalence of visual impairment and severity of diabetic retinopathy in various ethnic groups in the UK
Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of visual impairment (VI) in the working population. Minor ethnic groups are at increased risk of diabetes. Diabetic Retinopathy In Various Ethnic groups in the United Kingdom (DRIVE UK) is a cross-sectional study to estimate the prevalence of DR, VI and associated risk factors for sight threatening diabetic retinopathy (STDR) in Afro-Caribbeans (AC) and South Asians (SA) compared to Caucasians. People with diabetes in two regions in the United Kingdom who were screened and/or treated for DR from September 2008 to September 2009 were included in this study. VI and severe visual impairment (SVI) were defined as Snellen visual acuity of ≤ 6/18 and ≤ 6/60 respectively. DR was graded according to National Screening Committee (NSC) for diabetes guidelines UK.
There were 57,144 people on the diabetic register, of which retinopathy data was available from 50,285 (88.1%) subjects (type 1 n=3,323, type 2 n=46,962). In type 1 and type 2 diabetes, any DR was detected in 53.1%, 39.5%, diabetic maculopathy in 13.1%, 8.4% and STDR in 9.91%, 4.0% of people respectively. STDR was significantly more prevalent in the SA (10.3%) and AC (11.5%) populations compared to Caucasians (5.5%). Overall VI was significantly higher in the ethnic minority population. A total of 7.5% (95% CI 7.3, 7.8) people with diabetes were not eligible for driving based on their visual acuity, 3.4% (95% CI 3.2, 3.5) were classified as VI and 0.4% (95% CI 0.33, 0.44) as SVI. Risk factors for STDR were found to include longer duration of diabetes and higher mean HbA1c.
This study provides information that could be used to help develop future service frameworks and guidelines for local health bodies responsible for delivery of end userservices. The study also supports the need to explore the role of inflammatory, genetic and epigenetic factors as markers for ethnic differences in DR and potential treatment avenues for diabetic retinopathy
