Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Letter from Nellie O'Neil, Firemen's Insurance Company, Orlando, Florida, to R. H. Banister, Woodward, Alabama, March 5, 1918
A document from an extensive collection spanning four generations of the Woodward family that operated merchant pig iron companies in West Virginia and Alabama. The collection begins with Stimpson Harvey Woodward (S. H. Woodward), a native of Massachusetts, who moved from Pittsburgh to Wheeling, West Virginia in 1852. He had interests in an iron company as early as 1852 in West Virginia and began Alabama operations in 1869. The family business continued in Alabama until the death of S. H. Woodward's great-grandson in 1965
Determining Proxy Consent
Two primary standards of review have been used by the courts to
determine the validity of proxy consent to medical procedures on behalf of
incompetent persons. The "substituted judgment" test, justified by the
principle of autonomy, asks whether the incompetent person would have
consented to the procedure if competent. The "best interests" test, justified
by the principle of beneficence, asks whether the procedure will benefit the
person. O'Neil clarifies the relative merits and proper roles of these
standards by distinguishing six types of cases involving incompetent persons
and determining which standard is appropriate for each type. (KIE
