A comparative study of form and theology in the works of Flannery O'Connor and Simone Weil

In this comparative study of the form and theology of Flannery O'Connor and Simone Weil I interrogate how Weil's philosophical writings and her theology illuminate O'Connor's use of both narrative and non-fictional forms, and her Catholicism. The Introduction analyses how Weil's concept of superposed reading provides a new method of approaching both O'Connor, her writings, and O'Connor studies, and focuses on how such apparently different women interconnect. Chapter One explores how both Weil and O'Connor attempt to write their theologies on the souls of their readers yet are each subject to constraints imposed by form. Weil's concept of locating equilibrium between incommensurates is discussed, and her distinctively philosophical approach to fictions and fictionality is used to investigate O'Connor's notion of prophetic fictions and the writer's role. Chapter Two assesses how both writers revivify Christian paradoxes. Weil's monstrous concept of affiiction, and O'Connor's use of the grotesque genre to jolt secular man into an awareness of the sacred are scrutinised. Chapter Three studies how both writers consider an encounter between God and man is possible through the action of grace. My Conclusion interrogates how Weil's work can deepen our understanding of O'Connor's writings, and examines how successful O'Connor is at realising a truly Christian literature. I conclude that despite being a writer of powerful fictions, O'Connor can not be totally successful in her mission as writer-prophet because ultimately fiction escapes orthodoxy

Aesop's Fables: Kids Can Read! Interactive CD-ROM

Ten fables are presented with one illustration adapted from Arthur Rackham for each. One can hear the text read in English. One can also click on objects or words for names, sound effects, syllables, Spanish, or more explanation. Included are "The Crab & his Mother," FG, GA, "The Travellers & the Plane Tree," CP, DS, TMCM, "The Cat & the Birds," "The Quack Frog," and FC. Technology moves quickly enough that this disk may have some compatibility problems with computers younger than it. I had to go to "Start," "Run," and "D: install" with a double click on "Discis.exe" to get it going in my new machine.Aesop's Fables: Kids Can Read! Interactive CD-ROM. No authors acknowledged. Author Co-Citation Analysis (ACA): a powerful tool for representing implicit knowledge of scholar knowledge workers

    No full text
In the last decade, knowledge has emerged as one of the most important and valuable organizational assets. Gradually this importance caused to emergence of new discipline entitled ―knowledge management‖. However one of the major challenges of knowledge management is conversion implicit or tacit knowledge to explicit knowledge. Thus Making knowledge visible so that it can be better accessed, discussed, valued or generally managed is a long-standing objective in knowledge management. Accordingly in this paper author co- citation analysis (ACA) will be proposed as an efficient technique of knowledge visualization in academia (Scholar knowledge workers)

Portfolio of recorded performances and exegesis: Messiaen’s musical language for the jazz pianist - an exploration through performance.

Moving beyond Gunther Schuller’s Third Stream amalgamation of classical and jazz, this study explores whether the musical language of Olivier Messiaen can make a valid contribution to jazz piano performance. Initially, my project sought to answer such questions as: What elements of the musical language of Messiaen already exist in the jazz vocabulary? Am I able to extend this further? What are the timbral structures and pianistic effects within Messiaen’s musical language? What will be the most effective application of Messiaen’s musical language to jazz piano performance? Endeavouring to answer the final question led me to consider such aspects as whether the project should be limited to quoting Messiaen motifs, arranging Messiaen melodies, replacing jazz harmonic structures on standards with examples from Messiaen’s musical language or whether it would be better to approach the research conceptually. The work of Hubert Nuss provided encouraging reassurance that this was not an impossible task. In order to articulate this conception, the initial challenge was to decide how the classical and jazz worlds might meet in a ‘Messiaen’ technique. The approach adopted was similar to that used for undergraduate jazz study, namely, immersion in the piano scores and recordings of Messiaen’s music as well as by live performances. This was followed by the development and assessment of a contrived approach when specific techniques, such as tonal colourings or harmonic structures, were developed through prepared exercises and consciously included in my performance. It was then compared with an intuitive approach when no such precise parameters were established. This submission consists of CD recordings of two public recitals and an exegesis. It documents the development of this Messiaen technique and discusses its application in my performances. It also demonstrates the ways that Messiaen’s musical language can be used within jazz piano performance to provide a colour that distinguishes jazz piano performance in a competitive field.Thesis (M.Mus.) -- University of Adelaide, Elder Conservatorium of Music, 201

An appraisal of the Damascus document and its significance for the Qumran community

This thesis is a study of the central themes of the Damascus Document and the purposes for which it was written. Before the discovery of the Qumran MSS a variety of opinions were held about the authorship of CD and the date of its composition. Since the (Qumran discoveries most scholars have accepted the overwhelming evidence which identifies CD as a composition of the Qumran community. This fact points to a first century BC date for its composition. The central theme of CD is covenant with God. To be in covenant with him it is necessary to obey God's law and to do that it is necessary to know what that law is and how it should be put into practice. The legal material of CD is, therefore, of fundamental importance. The Qumran community saw itself as heir to the succession of faithfulservants of God, who had resisted the repeated apostasy of the rest of God's people. God had, time and again, punished his faithless people, but had always preserved a faithful remnant. The theme of exile in CD reflects the Qumran community's belief that it was living, like the faithful had done so often in the past, in a period of wrath. They were convinced, however, of their own fidelity to God because of the leadership of the Teacher of Righteousness, who is to be identified as a Zadokite priest. Thus was continuity with God's chosen ones of old assured, and in this assurance the community looked forward to the coming of the Messiah. Attempts to trace the origin of the community to Babylon are unfounded. The place-name 'Damascus' is a cryptic reference to Qumran. The Babylonian Exile is part of the community's heritage, but not the place of its origin as a distinct group. CD presents the claim of the Qumran community to be the true heir of those who had been faithful to God in the past. It demonstrates that the basis for this fidelity is the covenant and, in its legal material, it shows how it believed that the members of the community were to make observance of the covenant a reality in their way of life
