The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Stakeholder’s perspectives on integrating sustainability in project management

    No full text
In today’s world, the way business and organisations deal with their procedure of lading their work is more project driven and moreover they are driven by sustainability goals than ever before. It is evident that for a project to be successful the inclusion of sustainability is clear but the vision and approach for the two domains are different, so it would be interesting to investigate the link between them. Especially by examining, the comprehensive importance of stakeholders in project management processes. Hence the research aims to study the influence of stakeholder in providing positive contributions and their impact analysis for project management practices. Several participants or stakeholders were selected who are working on projects related to sustainability goals as their prime concern, out of which four were finalised. An important finding that was discovered that different stakeholders had different perspectives related to the three performance indicators of sustainability which is People, Planet and Profit, but still more significance was given to the economic factors and the inclusion of environmental and social aspects were rarely measured in the management and delivery of their projects, although they categorise their projects as sustainable. Application of lean principles to IT management

    No full text
Lean is a management principle that originated in the company Toyota in the 1980s and since then, has been used by manufacturing companies throughout the world. It has had positive effects on the manufacturing industry: reduced costs and increased the speed of production. This Thesis aims to derive whether lean can also have similar positive effects on the IT industry, specifically software delivery. The study uses the philosophy of positivism and a deductive approach in order to conclude whether lean principles make software delivery efficient. Data has been collected using a case study as well as surveys and a quantitative method has been applied to analyse the data. In order to quantify efficiency, the parameters being studied are cost of the projects and time taken to deliver. The research findings have drawn a correlation between the use of lean principles and the cost and speed of projects. The results show that the use of lean principles decreases the cost of projects and enables teams to ship their software faster. Author keywords: Lean principles, IT managemen

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Business success and sustainability of major US social network companies : a comparison between Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google

Since the late 90’s, the development of new technologies as well as the establishment of Web 2.0 have permitted the emergence of social media such as social network sites. In recent years the growing popularity of Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+ and in particular Facebook reveal that these sites are an important phenomenon in society. Although these companies have a large user base, their sustainability and their business success in a capitalistic economy depends essentially on their profitability. In particular, the business model and the strategies of a company are critical in terms of making a profit. The monetization approach of social network sites is frequently based on an online advertising model. However, this does not necessarily lead to business success. The current study aims to investigate if these four American (US) social network companies are successful financially and if this success is sustainable through the analysis of various factors. A comparison between Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google+ is also made. In addition, six in-depths interviews (qualitative data) were conducted as part of this research. The research found that even if the monetization by the sale of advertising space is the main source of revenue for the four companies studied, results are different from one company to another. Additionally, the importances of social, psychological or technological factors are also presented, as well as the significance of new mobile devices for these social network companies. Following, the main causation of growth is explored for these four major US social network companies, such as innovation and acquisitions. Opportunities to manage big data efficiently and effectively

    No full text
Big data can enable part-automated decision making. By by-passing the possibility of human-error through the use of advanced algorithm, information can be found that otherwise would be hidden. Banks can use big data analytics to spot fraud, government can use big data analytics for cost cuts through deeper insight, the private sector can use big data to optimize service or product offering as well as targeting of customers through more advanced marketing. Organization across all sectors and in particular government is currently investing heavily in big data (Enterprise Ireland, 2014). One would think that an investment in superior technology that can support competitiveness and business insight should be of priority to organization, but due to the sometimes high costs associated with big data, decision makers struggle to justify the investment and to find the right talent for big data projects. Due to the premature stage of big data research, the supply has not been able to keep up with the demand from organizations that want to leverage on big data analytics. Big data explorers and big data adopters struggle with access to qualitative as well as quantitative research on big data. The lack of access to big data know-how information, best practice advice and guidelines drove this study. The objective is to contribute to efforts being made to support a wider adoption of big data analytics. This study provides unique insight through a primary data study that aims to support big data explorers and adopters. No full text
The main objective of this research is to understand the impact of communication technologies on the success of IT virtual team projects. Communication technology has consequences for every virtual team project and its legacy will be measured by future generations. Much debate has ensured the perceived necessity of communication technologies in virtual team projects yet no study has ultimately proven the fact that whether advancement in communication technologies will create massive impact in virtual team's performance and ensure success. The aims of this research are to establish understanding of virtual teams and its communication technologies in IT organizations, how communication technologies are used to improve virtual team performance, do current communication technologies fully satisfy the key needs of virtual team projects and whether future communication technologies can be used among the virtual teams to facilitate an increase in the productivity of the resources. The research uses in-depth semi-structured interview, which is a qualitative method. Interviews involved project managers and software engineers from different IT organizations. The interviews were recorded, transcribed and analysed according to the thematic analysis. This research establishes that advancement in current communication technologies lead virtual teams in IT sector to ensure successful delivery of projects rather than to implement future communication technologies, which experiences unsustainable level of barriers both politically and technologically. The researcher through secondary research, which is supported through primary research, acknowledges the need of two important theories that should be acknowledged by virtual team projects i.e. media richness theory and adaptive structuration theory. Advancement in the present communication technologies such as video conferencing and web-ex has a more profound positive effect in the success and development of virtual team projects. In the conclusion, the researcher recognizes the advancement in current communication technologies. On that node video conferencing provides a strategic response to complex and unpredictable challenges faced by IT organizations. The research also founds that video-conferencing satisfies the key needs of the virtual team project and helps to reduce technological barriers such as miscommunication and information overload. We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
