Evaluation Report: Peer Led Collaborative

Practice Nurses (PNs) are at the interface between primary care and hospital services yet their capacity to improve integrated care have not fully been explored. As health care becomes more complex, the need for connected services becomes more important. The Peer Led Collaborative (PLC) was an Integrated Care initiative in South Eastern
Sydney Local Health District which aimed to strengthen networks between PNs and Clinical Nurse Consultants (CNCs) and improve effective management and referral pathways for patients with chronic conditions. Six small group learning sessions were held over six-months in 2019. Participants set group objectives including to gain a better understanding of roles, capabilities and referral processes; and increase actionable connections between services.An evaluation of the group learning
intervention showed all participants meeting self-directed professional learning needs. Most actionable was increased understanding of roles, how to access clinical services and use referral pathways. On reflection, the constraints of PNs working across sectors were also discussed.
Continued small group learning can enhance seamless care. However the broad scope of practice and various learning needs of PNs place constraints on their ability to effectively bridge services. Future initiatives for PNs could be to map their needs and locations, provide clinical clustered mentoring and continue networking / learning opportunities

With its use of second person and a penchant for turning tropes of crime fiction on their heads, this book is a must read. Three ENGL 414 students had the opportunity to interview the author via email to discuss Cathy Ulrich’s intentions in Ghosts of You, as well as her own personal writing techniques. Moving diversity from the periphery : diverse staff interactions in children's hospitals
No full textPractices in health organisations in Australia predominantly reflect the Anglo-Australian mainstream culture, while the hospital workforce is typically culturally diverse. Management tends to view cultural diversity as peripheral to mainstream practice, and outside the core business of the health organisation. Staff from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds are sometimes called upon ad hoc to 'deal with' families from CALD backgrounds, on the basis of their shared ethnicity. It would be preferable for management to develop policies and practices that ensure all staff have the cultural competency to work with all patients. In a research study at two children's hospitals in metropolitan Sydney (O'Callaghan 2013), interviews reveal that staff practices demonstrate a broader conception of diversity than might be expected, even though only some staff and patients share the same ethnicity. In many cases, staff draw successfully on their knowledge, skills and migration experience to assist families, even where the ethnicity of staff does not match the ethnicity of patients. The concepts of productive diversity and relational positioning help explain how staff members engage with diversity in the organisation. Productive diversity refers to the positive recognition of the diversity of staff in terms of "language skills, communication styles, international networks, country knowledge and life experience" (Cope and Kalantzis 1997, x). Relational positioning is based on the idea that identity is "situationally constructed and defined and at the crossroads of different systems of alterity" (Friedman 1998, 47). It is suggested that staff could relate to families using different parts of their identity and based on various axes of differentiation and oppression beyond ethnicity. The outcome would be a higher quality of care for all patients and greater staff satisfaction when treating patients

Young people's help-seeking: an alternative model
No full textThis article is based on a study of young people's help-seeking. Fifty-five qualitative interviews with young people aged 13–14 are analysed to take account of stage process models. It is argued that while the models do have relevance to young people's help-seeking, they have two key limitations. First, they ignore problem legitimization. Second, they do not accord a place in young people's currenthelp-seeking to prior help-seeking pathways. The view that stage process models represent help-seeking as individualized and static led to the formulation by the author of an alternative help-seeking model, in which problem legitimization from micro to macro levels is incorporated alongside young people's prior helpseeking pathways. <br/
