Land-Use Mapping in a Mixed Urban-Agricultural Arid Landscape Using Object-Based Image Analysis: A Case Study from Maricopa, Arizona

Land-use mapping is critical for global change research. In Central Arizona, U.S.A., the spatial distribution of land use is important for sustainable land management decisions. The objective of this study was to create a land-use map that serves as a model for the city of Maricopa, an expanding urban region in the Sun Corridor of Arizona. We use object-based image analysis to map six land-use types from ASTER imagery, and then compare this with two per-pixel classifications. Our results show that a single segmentation, combined with intermediary classifications and merging, morphing, and growing image-objects, can lead to an accurate land-use map that is capable of utilizing both spatial and spectral information. We also employ a moving-window diversity assessment to help with analysis and improve post-classification modifications

Exploring determinants influencing a service-oriented enterprise strategy: An executive management view

    No full text
Due to the convergence of rapid business developments and digitization challenges firms need to become more agile. A service-oriented enterprise (SOE) strategy is an approach that decomposes an enterprise into business services that are modular, accessible, and interoperable, in which parts can be provided in-house, or outsourced to the market. The SOE concept has mainly been approached from a technological view and little is known about what type of strategic SOE determinants are relevant. A firm’s strategy to implement an SOE requires top management support. Therefore, insights at executive level are a prerequisite to identify strategic business directions. We conducted a literature review and a qualitative case study amongst eleven firms at executive level in various industries. Business services, business processes, and enabling technology were found in the literature as key determinants influencing a firm’s SOE strategy. Subsequently, the interviews at executive level identified that organizational readiness, knowledge and skills, and governance also affect the SOE strategy of firms. We suggest that a holistic view is required to study the complexity of an SOE. By using an executive view we contribute to IS and business literature as strategic SOE determinants become more explicit.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Information and Communication Technolog

Does the spatial arrangement of urban landscape matter? Examples of urban warming and cooling in Phoenix and Las Vegas

    No full text
abstract: This study examines the impact of spatial landscape configuration (e.g., clustered, dispersed) on land-surface temperatures (LST) over Phoenix, Arizona, and Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. We classified detailed land-cover types via object-based image analysis (OBIA) using Geoeye-1 at 3-m resolution (Las Vegas) and QuickBird at 2.4-m resolution (Phoenix). Spatial autocorrelation (local Moran’s I ) was then used to test for spatial dependence and to determine how clustered or dispersed points were arranged. Next, we used Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) data acquired over Phoenix (daytime on 10 June and nighttime on 17 October 2011) and Las Vegas (daytime on 6 July and nighttime on 27 August 2005) to examine day- and nighttime LST with regard to the spatial arrangement of anthropogenic and vegetation features. Local Moran’s I values of each land-cover type were spatially correlated to surface temperature. The spatial configuration of grass and trees shows strong negative correlations with LST, implying that clustered vegetation lowers surface temperatures more effectively. In contrast, clustered spatial arrangements of anthropogenic land-cover types, especially impervious surfaces and open soil, elevate LST. These findings suggest that city planners and managers should, where possible, incorporate clustered grass and trees to disperse unmanaged soil and paved surfaces, and fill open unmanaged soil with vegetation. Our findings are in line with national efforts to augment and strengthen green infrastructure, complete streets, parking management, and transit-oriented development practices, and reduce sprawling, unwalkable housing development.Corresponding Author: Soe Win Myint Arizona State University [email protected]

Conceptual design of pre-treatment units for co-electrolysis of CO₂ and water

    No full text
Reaching our climate goals will require urgent advancements in the development of fossil-free technologies. Solid-oxide electrolysis (SOE) at high-temperature is a promising candidate for combining CO₂ utilization and renewable electricity use. Explorative techno-economic analyses are being performed to understand the full plant design requirements for integrated SOE systems. However, there is still a lack of understanding of the potential impact that the pre-treatment of CO₂ will have on the overall design and economics of a SOE-based system. To address this knowledge gap, as a first step, the process model of the pre-treatment units needed to purify CO₂ from a bioethanol plant is developed in Aspen Plus in the current work. Based on the preliminary results of this paper, the equipment costs mainly stem from the units related to the removal of sulfur (~65%) and alcohols (~32%). The energy costs are almost entirely related to the cryogenic distillation step required for the removal of non-condensable gases (~96%).Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Energy and Industr

Critical Review of the Implementation of the Making of SOE as a Holding from Anti-Monopoly and Unfair Business Competition Perspective

This study aims to analyze the potential for SOE holdings to violate Law 5/1999. This study was conducted using a normative juridical method because the study was based on library research to obtain secondary data, sourced from primary, secondary, and tertiary legal materials. The specification of the research was descriptive-analytical because the author described the holding of SOE and then analyzed it to see if it has the potential to cause a violation of Law 5/1999. Data analysis using a qualitative juridical method. The results of the study indicated that the process of establishing an SOE holding based on Government Regulation Number 72 of 2016, so far has not been proven to have violated Law 5/1999. However, even though Article 33 of the Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia and Article 51 of Law 5/1999 intend SOE to be able to carry out a monopoly, the establishment of an SOE holding should still be able to guarantee the rights of the public to continue to do business in a healthy manner. The government needs to immediately stipulate regulations regarding governance in holding companies to maintain a competitive, healthy, and non-monopolistic business climate

‘The painful aftermath’: reactions to the publication of SOE in France

This article considers the aftermath of the publication of SOE in France. A groundbreaking official account of a secret wartime organisation, publication was followed by complaints and legal action. It examines how Whitehall responded to the negative fallout, and the tensions with the author, Professor MRD Foot, as officials refused to accept responsibility for the lack of personal testimony in the work, and prioritised settling legal cases and the avoidance of any further legal action as changes to the text were made for a revised first edition. The article also reflects upon whether the experience had any impact upon subsequent intelligence-related official histories

Taking ownership: The story of a successful partnership for change in a Pacific Island science teacher education setting.

This paper explores an example of a partnership approach that appears to be producing sustainable change in a Pacific Islands education setting. The people involved report on the way science education staff from the Solomon Islands School of Education (SOE) and staff from the Faculty of Education University of Waikato (UOW), New Zealand worked together on the redevelopment of undergraduate science education courses for the SOE. Together we sought to identify significant factors supporting the process. The development required significant change and posed a number of challenges yet resulted in local staff producing high quality materials and programmes and taking ownership of ongoing development. More importantly, there was significant personal professional learning in both science education and initial teacher education for local Solomon Islands staff. Factors contributing to the success of the partnership are explored through the perceptions of the participants and include the quality of relationship, mutual respect, emphasis on conceptual agreement when working together, and the involvement of local staff in decision-making

This resource aims to assist councils assess the services they provide for local communities. Service Delivery Review: A How to Manual for Local Government brings together advice, toolkits and templates to help councils regardless of size with this critical task. The centrepiece of the Manual is a \u27framework for a service delivery review.\u27 The Manual meets an increasing need from within the sector for practical guidance in undertaking service delivery reviews that are consistent with current local governance practice and processes. "This is a significant issue for local councils," said ACELG Director, Associate Professor Roberta Ryan and the Manual\u27s co-author: "Local government service provision has transformed significantly over recent decades, as well, community expectations of local government have increased while other levels of government have devolved various functions." The Manual is intended for council staff such as department managers, elected members, CEOs and general managers, community engagement staff, and builds upon ACELG research Service Delivery Reviews in Australian Local Government (2012) and discussions from the short course \u27Enhancing Local Government Service Delivery\u27 run by the UTS Centre for Local Government (UTS:CLG). Dr Tim Robinson, Director of Sector Engagement and Teaching with UTS:CLG, and second co-author said that the Manual was written with a certain amount of \u27future proofin\u27 in mind, and that "ocal government service delivery reviews are mandatory in a few jurisdictions or are driven by local or sector reform processes.
