Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Comparison of asynchronous signals generated from surface or bedrock natural accelerograms.
The non-synchronism of the seismic action is particularly important in the case of structures with considerable longitudinal extension. The propagation of motion in the soil is influenced by factors such as different types of foundation soils and heterogeneity of stratigraphic profiles, which determine a variation of the amplitudes and frequencies of the signals at different points in space. The objective of this work is the generation of a sample of asynchronous signals at different points in space, starting from natural accelerograms related to a given seismic event. These signals are inputs for successive linear and nonlinear seismic analyses. In this study we have implemented the computer code GAS (Nuti and Vanzi, 2005). The original GAS code generated earthquake samples of a random field matching given response spectra. Now the code starts from real accelerograms. The code has been applied and calibrated using for the same sites different generation procedure: a) propagation at the free field, b) propagation at the bedrock and subsequent local amplification. The procedure has been applied to real cases for which records in different points of the free field are known. The code EERA (J.P. Bardet, et al., 2000) has been used for soil amplification and deconvolutio
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
How patients' experiences help institutions to improve care in oncological pathway.
To improve services, institutions need to listen the patients voice. The patient experience through the health care pathway can help institutions to point out the problems and to learn to design the organization putting the patient at the center of the service. Methods. Focus groups were performed on a group of patients affected by colon rectum neoplasia who had an operation during June-September 2003 in the hospitals located in three geographical districts. It was performed a focus group per district in the period between June and July 2004. Results. Overall patient were interviewed in district A, B and C, respectively. District C included a Universtiy Hospital and a Community Hospital. We choose the focus group technics because of the peculiarity of the studied disease. By a crossed reading of patients' experience we obtained two type of informations: how CORD is working (CORD is the structure which has the role of coordination of oncological pathway, according to the regional guidelines) and which are the strength ness and the weakness of the services delivered by each healthcare unit participating at the study. The patient experience in benchmarking through out different institutions, has been useful for managers to start an internal process of reviewing critical points regarding above all humanization and care coordination along the heath care pathway. Particularly interesting is the case of the University Hospital of Pisa, where the patients indications allowed the institution to reengineering the process, to improve services and empower the communication skills of the physicians and nurses involved in the clinical pathway . Conclusions. Patient point of view in oncological care was an easy tool for improving the health care pathway. It gives to health managers a simple method that allows the organization to evaluate services through the patients eyes .Focus group, Oncological pathway, Patients’ point of view
To compute or not to compute?
In a previous paper “to retrofit or not to retrofit?” (Nuti and Vanzi, 2003) a straightforward procedure able to forecast the economic return of seismic structural upgrading was presented. More recently, the authors realized that the final mathematical results can be much simplified so as to allow back-of-an-envelope computation. The title of this paper tries to highlight precisely this aspect, namely that for many a regular seismic structural upgrading cases, nearly no computation is needed (apart from one subtraction and one multiplication) to assess their economic convenience. These findings are presented and discussed in this paper, together with a state of the art on the cost-studies available in literature and technical codes. The mathematical formulation leading to the proposed approximation is suitably explained, underlining its applicability field and comparing it with the rigorous solution. Also a table and a formula are furnished that alternatively allows to calculate the maximum estimation errors, in order to obtain an upper and lower bound for the maximum amount of money which should be allocated for seismic structural upgrading. Finally an application example is described, dealing with retrofitting of reinforced concrete viaducts, a widespread bridge typology in Italy. The adopted upgrading solution consists of a concrete jacket at the base of some piers, particularly suitable in order to increase their ductility.
