Combining chicken retina RNA-seq data across studies to strengthen biomarker detection

    Get PDF
Various studies have identified the chicken embryo (Gallus gallus) as a useful model to study the retinogenesis process in humans. This project uses data from two specific RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) studies to investigate retina developmental biology. These studies are done in two different labs using different protocols, as such they cannot be compared directly. Study 1 contains chicken retina samples from embryonic day 3, 5 and 8; while study 2 has retina samples from embryonic day 8, 16, and 18 of developmental age. We apply a normalization method on both studies to account for differences in the two studies. In this work, we perform gene expression analysis on the transformed data to identify genes that could affect the retina development process

Effects of ferrous toxicity on seedling traits and ion distribution pattern in upland and low land rice under hydroponic conditions

Environmentally, nutritional disorders are the major constraints due to the change in soil pH for rice crop cultivated under different irrigation system. Iron toxicity is one of the famous nutritional disorders caused by the excessive uptake of ferrous ion in low pH under aerobic conditions. This research study was focused to measure the effect of different levels of ferrous stress on seedling traits, distribution of ferrous, potassium ions in two upland rice and three lowland rice varieties. The mean comparison of growth parameters were formulated using least significant differences, as well as the experimental treatments were compared by analysis of variance. Varieties showed significant differences for growth parametershowever, lowland rice varieties like Pokkali and Firat exhibited the minimum deterioration in growth parameters. The root length was significantly reduced under ferrous stress in all varieties. Ferrous accumulation was high in roots compared to aerial plant parts and flag leaves exhibited the minimum accumulations. Reduction of potassium reflected in all plant parts when an increased in stress was imposed. Upland rice varieties were found sensitive compared to lowland rice varieties. It is thereforeconcluded that the growth parameters would be a reflecting index for ferrous toxicity in rice. Furthermore, the availability and uptake of potassium is improved, it may minimize the effects of ferrous toxicity

Abstract 3771: Concurrent GVAX and anti-OX40 therapy in murine intracranial glioma model

Abstract Introduction: Malignant glioma is the most aggressive brain tumor with a median survival time of less than 1.5 years post diagnosis despite standard treatments. However, recent advancements in immunotherapy hold significant promise. Irradiated whole tumor cell vaccination stimulates antitumor immunity and prolongs survival in mice with intracranial glioma tumors. We have shown that vaccination and immune checkpoint blockade is synergistic and these efforts are underway in the clinic. In contrast to immune checkpoint blockade, agonist stimulation of OX40, a member of the TNFR/TNF superfamily that is expressed on activated CD4 and CD8 T lymphocytes increases T cell proliferation, clonal memory differentiation, and cytokine release. We hypothesized that subcutaneous vaccination with irradiated GM-CSF expressing glioma cells (GVAX) would, therefore, synergize with systemic delivery of stimulating anti-OX40 antibody and provide effective immunity against intracranial gliomas. Methods: Gl261 cells were implanted in the right frontal lobes of syngeneic c57/bl6 mice using a stereotactic implantation technique. Mice received concurrent subcutaneous injection of irradiated GM-CSF expressing glioma cells and intraperitoneal injection of OX40 antibody, either monotherapy, or control treatment on days 3, 6 and 9 following tumor implantation. Results: Combination immunotherapy with irradiated GM-CSF expressing glioma cells and intraperitoneal delivery of agonist monoclonal antibody against OX40 was more effective than either therapy alone and prolonged survival in mice with established intracranial GL261 tumors. Elispot analyses of peripheral lymphocytes revealed that combination immunotherapy reverses the Th2 cytokine skew that is induced by the presence of intracranial glioma. OX40 signaling alone and in combination with vaccination drove high levels of interferon gamma expression by splenocytes harvested from glioma-bearing animals, while IL-10 expression was little changed. In the tumor microenvironment, vaccination improves the CD8+ /FoxP3+ T lymphocyte ratio, while OX40 ligation overcomes tumor-driven lymphocyte exhaustion, demonstrated by reduced expression of PD1 and LAG3, measured by flow cytometery 2 weeks after initiation of treatment. Conclusions: Combination treatment with GVAX and OX-40 agonist antibody increased survival in mice bearing intracranial gliomas and are mechanistically complementary. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

학위논문 (석사)-- 서울대학교 대학원 : 국제대학원 국제학과(국제통상전공), 2019. 2. Kim, Chong-Sup. 2016-26738In this era of the globalisation, where production and final consumption doesnt take place simultaneously increasing concerns are there regarding who actually captures value. The rise of Global Value Chain with double accounting has become one of the prominent issues in trade, policy and investment. The alley to know the facts are really narrow and also their actual impact on the economic development have not been ascertained rigorously yet, considering the level of development and income. Thereby with the help of OECD and WTO, we are now exposed to the complex data set. In my research I have studied the causal relationship of global value chain participation and its effect on the industrial development of concerned countries. Most of the authors till now have mainly focused on developing GVC indicators. Using data sets from secondary sources, in my empirical research I have found out that there is a very significant strong positive relationship between the participation of global value chain on country level industrial development irrespective to the level of income and development. In an extension in my research I have also measured the individual industries performances/impacts to that of their industrial development which also gives us the idea about the causal relationship and the impact of individual industrial sectors to their industrial development and growth at a large.
