'Right, Duty, Remedy' - Introduction to Thijmen Nuninga's dissertation

In this thesis the development of a compressor for a gas network simulation will be discussed. The modelled compressor is a centrifugal compressor and this compressor is common to use when compressing gas. At first the equations to describe a centrifugal compressor and an ex- ample parameter set are given. These equations will be used in an algorithm to calculate either the suction pressure, the discharge pressure or the volume flow. A compressor can only operate when it is in a feasible area. This feasible area is defined by both a surge and choke line as well as the minimum and maximum rotation speed. The gas network considered consists of a compressor plus a pipeline in front and after the compressor. To model a pipeline the Weymouth pressure-drop equation is used. The pipe- compressor system can be described as a system of seven equations. There are seven unknown variables and two given variables. The given variables are the pressure at the beginning of the first pipeline and the pressure at the end of the second pipeline. To solve the system of equations a nonlinear solver is used. The Newton method is an ex- ample of such a nonlinear solver and will be discussed for scalar equations and a system of equations. Solving the system of equations as part of a simulation, a function in Python called fsolve will be used. This function uses a more robust algorithm to get the solution quickly. The numerical behaviour of the solver will be considered during multiple simulations. Fur- thermore a parameter study has been done to understand what kind of pipelines are needed for a certain pressure ratio. Finally two examples are discussed briefly.Applied Mathematic

Building façade renovation through parametric panel generation for Dutch housing
The Dutch government has set the goal to disconnect all houses from the natural gas network that runs through our country. This to decrease emissions and meet the goals set in the Paris Agreement in an effort to halt the global mean temperature increase. To provide heat to the houses they will need to be heated with electric energy. This heating system is most efficient using lower temperatures therefore the houses will need to have a building envelope which has the right insulation levels. Meaning that a lot of older houses will need to be insulated better and therefore renovated. To reach this goal more than a 1000 house will need to be renovated every day. Ranging from small addition of insulation to houses that have no insulation at all.To provide this solution this thesis researched the possibility of using parametric design to generate timber frame renovation panels. By doing so the time to engineer these panels could drastically drop while it would still be possible to adjust panels to building owner or designer’s needs. The boundary of this thesis is set to research the possibilities on prewar row houses as these have the largest impact with the consumption of 21 TWh every year. The process of renovation using prefab elements has been studied to determine the steps that are to be performed to complete the renovation. Within these steps the panels are engineered. This step has been disected into more detail to see what steps are taken to go from design to a panel that can be manufactured. The steps are then automized using python and grasshopper as software and the engineers decisions are implied by parameters. The steps taken to generate the panels are: determining the to be panelized area, composing the panel contours, creating the panel geometries and calculating the panel specific data. These steps are to be automated by using the step specific parameters which are: the panel size limit, tolerances and geometry sizing and properties. These are decided by the engineer or are already established in the pre-engineering phase. Together they enable the tool to generate building information models of prefabricated building envelope panels which can be adjusted by its user if required.Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences | Building Technolog
An explorative study into circular strategies and their implementation within Dutch Water boards
This research discussed circularity and gave a proper definition for this for the Dutch water boards. This research developed an implementation tool that can be used by the water boards. It shows which design criteria exist within the core measurement method of cb23. These design criteria consist of 7 indicators. It is advised to use these indicators as circular ambitions for the water boards. These indicators can be measured over time, in which the water boards can effectively steer and measure these ambitions. This research showed 42 circular strategies, which have been connected to the ambitions of the CMM through an implementation tool. Strategies are connected to one of the 9 life cycle stages of an asset. These strategies, however, can conflict which each other. For example, solar panels might generate green energy, but if the alloys used can not be recovered, this results in a valuable loss of scarce materials. Moreover, some strategies are dependent on other strategies or can create synergy. An overview of these interactions is provided.Civil Engineering | Construction Management and Engineerin
Designer Empowerment through mixed-initiative Wave Function Collapse
Wave Function Collapse (WFC) is a powerful generative algorithm, able to create locally-similar output based on a single example input. One of the inherent limitations of the original WFC is that it often requires users to understand its inner workings, and possibly make their own ad-hoc mods to achieve satisfactory results. Besides distracting from your creative task, this strongly reduces the algorithm's effective usefulness to a small group of technical users. We propose a novel mixed-initiative approach to WFC, aimed at overcoming these drawbacks. These methods focus on providing intuitive control to its users, in a way that matches their usual creative workflow.Among its main features, this approach provides (i) interactive navigation through design history, including controlled backtracking, (ii) precise manual editing of the output for direct expression of design intent, (iii) interactive manipulation of the tiles, and (iv) an initial layered approach towards post-processing algorithm output. These methods combined provide the required tools for users to tweak the global appearance of the output. We evaluated a prototype implementation of our approach among game artists and other creative professionals, and concluded that its features were largely considered intuitive and supportive to express their creative intent.Computer Science | Software Technolog
