Walter Nugent\u27s Into the West: The Story of Its People adds an outstanding volume to the canon of Western history, reminding readers of the intellectual vitality that fuels this discipline. The book undertakes a grand sweep of Western history, from the speculative past of prehistoric tribes to the speculative future of the twenty-first century. On this epic journey across and through the American West, Nugent delivers exactly what he promises: a book about people.
Despite romantic notions about the region that haunt Americans, Nugent sees the West as a definable place with a history larger than images of a frontier heyday. He presents a chronological account centered on five factors that impelled migration into the West: land hunger, valuable resources, improved quality of life, regional nostalgia, and desire for personal betterment. He writes of the assorted people who, across time, responded to one or all of these forces. Nugent\u27s West is a cultural kaleidoscope. Shifting his lens from Native people to Spanish-speakers to Asians to Euro-Americans to African Americans, he details their successes and failures as they competed for contested spaces. Few authors can so successfully combine sterling scholarship with a warm personal prose marked by insight and wit. The writing moves so easily one can hear the author speaking its words.
This is not, however, merely a collection of interesting vignettes about the known and the unknown, the Leland Stanfords and the Mabel Tom Lees of the area, but a balanced, inclusive treatment of the various subregions of the West. Nugent paints a richly textured Western mural, drawing on voluminous evidence to show how the West turned on an axis of rural and urban exigencies. Those interested in the Great Plains part of this narrative will not be disappointed. The homesteaders\u27 West is there, with its economics and demographics, its ups and downs, from the past to the present, all ably portrayed.
Walter Nugent argues that the West deserves historical treatment that eschews parochialism. Accordingly, this is a book of vision and synthesis. To search out faults would be nit-picking at a graceful, compassionate work that embraces the West with scholarly and critical affection. With striking photographs and powerful descriptions, it weaves irony and contradiction, despair and hope, optimism and humor, greed and frustration into our understanding of the West. This is history-frontier, Western, regional, national-at its best, and Walter Nugent well deserves every accolade he receives for Into the West
A high Nugent score but not a positive culture for genital mycoplasmas is a risk factor for spontaneous preterm birth
Objective. This study was performed to evaluate the relationship among the Nugent score for the diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis (BV), the results of vaginal fluid culture for genital mycoplasmas, and the subsequent occurrence of preterm birth. Methods. The Nugent score and culture for genital mycoplasmas were performed in vaginal fluid obtained from 977 pregnant women (gestational age 13-30 weeks). Vaginal samples were obtained with sterile cotton swabs. The relationship among the Nugent score, vaginal fluid culture results and the occurrence of spontaneous preterm birth was examined. Results. (1) Of the 977 women, 14% (137) had a Nugent score of 8; (2) The prevalence of a positive vaginal culture for genital mycoplasmas was 30% (288); Ureaplasma urealyticum was isolated in 252 (88%), Mycoplasma hominis in 9 (3%), and both in 27 (9%) women; (3) Cases with a Nugent score of 8 had a higher rate of a positive vaginal culture for genital mycoplasmas than those with the lower Nugent score (55%vs. 25%; p0.001); (4) Women with a Nugent score of 8 had a significantly higher rate of spontaneous preterm birth 37 (10%vs. 4%), 34 (5%vs. 2%), and 32 (4%vs. 1%) weeks of gestation than those with the lower Nugent score (at each gestational age, p0.05); (5) In contrast, a positive vaginal culture for genital mycoplasmas was not associated with an increased risk for spontaneous preterm birth; (6) Among patients with a positive culture and a Nugent score of 8, the frequency of spontaneous preterm delivery (37 weeks) was 10% (7/72); (7) There was no difference in the incidence of spontaneous preterm delivery according to the results of vaginal culture in patients with a Nugent score of 8, as well as in those with a lower Nugent score. Conclusion. A statistical analysis of circumstellar material in Type Ia supernovae
A key tracer of the elusive progenitor systems of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) is the detection of narrow blueshifted time-varying Na I D absorption lines, interpreted as evidence of circumstellar material surrounding the progenitor system. The origin of this material is controversial, but the simplest explanation is that it results from previous mass-loss in a system containing a white dwarf and a non-degenerate companion star. We present new single-epoch intermediate-resolution spectra of 17 low-redshift SNe Ia taken with XShooter on the European Southern Observatory Very Large Telescope. Combining this sample with events from the literature, we confirm an excess (∼20 per cent) of SNe Ia displaying blueshifted narrow Na I D absorption features compared to redshifted Na I D features. The host galaxies of SNe Ia displaying blueshifted absorption profiles are skewed towards later-type galaxies, compared to SNe Ia that show no Na I D absorption and SNe Ia displaying blueshifted narrow Na I D absorption features have broader light curves. The strength of the Na I D absorption is stronger in SNe Ia displaying blueshifted Na I D absorption features than those without blueshifted features, and the strength of the blueshifted Na I D is correlated with the B − V colour of the SN at maximum light. This strongly suggests the absorbing material is local to the SN. In the context of the progenitor systems of SNe Ia, we discuss the significance of these findings and other recent observational evidence on the nature of SN Ia progenitors. We present a summary that suggests that there are at least two distinct populations of normal, cosmologically useful SNe Ia

The long-wavelength view of GG Tau A: rocks in the ring world
We present the first detection of GG Tau A at centimetre wavelengths, made with the Arcminute Microkelvin Imager Large Array at a frequency of 16 GHz (λ = 1.8 cm). The source is detected at >6 σrms with an integrated flux density of S16GHz = 249 ± 45 µJy. We use these new centimetre-wave data, in conjunction with additional measurements compiled from the literature, to investigate the long-wavelength tail of the dust emission from this unusual protoplanetary system. We use an MCMC-based method to determine maximum likelihood parameters for a simple parametric spectral model and consider the opacity and mass of the dust contributing to the microwave emission. We derive a dust mass of Md ~ 0.1 Msun, constrain the dimensions of the emitting region and find that the opacity index at λ > 7 mm is less than unity, implying a contribution to the dust population from grains exceeding ~4 cm in size. We suggest that this indicates coagulation within the GG Tau A system has proceeded to the point where dust grains have grown to the size of small rocks with dimensions of a few centimetres. Considering the relatively young age of the GG Tau association in combination with the low derived disc mass, we suggest that this system may provide a useful test case for rapid core accretion planet formation models
Type Ia supernova spectral features in the context of their host galaxy properties
We analyse spectroscopic measurements of 122 Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) with z < 0.09 discovered by the Palomar Transient Factory, focusing on the properties of the Si ii ?6355 and Ca ii ‘near-infrared triplet’ absorptions. We examine the velocities of the photospheric Si ii ?6355, and the velocities and strengths of the photospheric and high-velocity Ca ii, in the context of the stellar mass (Mstellar) and star formation rate (SFR) of the SN host galaxies, as well as the position of the SN within its host. We find that SNe Ia with faster Si ii ?6355 tend to explode in more massive galaxies, with the highest velocity events only occurring in galaxies with Mstellar > 3 × 109 M?. We also find some evidence that these highest velocity SNe Ia explode in the inner regions of their host galaxies, similar to the study of Wang et al., although the trend is not as significant in our data. We show that these trends are consistent with some SN Ia spectral models, if the host galaxy stellar mass is interpreted as a proxy for host galaxy metallicity. We study the strength of the high-velocity component of the Ca ii near-IR absorption, and show that SNe Ia with stronger high-velocity components relative to photospheric components are hosted by galaxies with low Mstellar, blue colour, and a high sSFR. Such SNe are therefore likely to arise from the youngest progenitor systems. This argues against a pure orientation effect being responsible for high-velocity features in SN Ia spectra and, when combined with other studies, is consistent with a scenario where high-velocity features are related to an interaction between the SN ejecta and circumstellar medium local to the SN
