"Walcząc o swoje pisanie, walczę o życie" - o kolekcjach reportaży Melchiora Wańkowicza
In her article, the author attempts to describe a few works by Melchior
Wańkowicz, a reporter and a writer, best known for his monumental Bitwa o Monte
Cassino (The Battle of Monte Cassino). Drawing upon the terminology elaborated by
Manfred Sommer, she concludes that, at the final stage of his life, Wańkowicz turns
into a “gatherer” who revisits and reorders his earlier writings to compose new collections.
Although the reportages in question vary in terms of their artistic quality, the
consistency and doggedness of their author who, approaching the end, still deals with
his prolific literary output, is striking. For Wańkowicz writing had always been raison
d’être, and the sense of the end looming on the horizon contributed largely to rekindling
of his creative powers. A tentative hypothesis put forward by the author suggests
that the method of composition peculiar to Wańkowicz (a literary mosaic) may be seen
as another variant of the anthology
Dom, którego nie ma : problematyka rodzinna w powieści "Ziele na kraterze" Melchiora Wańkowicza
Family issues constitute an important link in works by Melchior Wańkowicz. The
article makes an attempt to answer the question on the role of home for the author of Ziele
na kraterze. The motive is perceived here in three perspectives: as a material substance, an
image of family bonds and multigenerational traditions. The author aim to answer the
question why the writers — representatives of the gentry refer rather to an idea of a hom
than, as writers of the peasant trend, to their own regions and land. In the works of the
latter the issue of a connection with a specific place is less important
Pisarz w świecie mediów (o medialnym wizerunku Ryszarda Kapuścińskiego po publikacji biografii Artura Domosławskiego)
The author dealt with one issue: a media portrait of Ryszard Kapuściński in the context
of a book written by Artur Domosławski Kapuściński non-fiction and published in March
2010, as well as a media campaign connected with the reporter’s biography. The author:
claims that “the promotion of the book Kapuściński non-fiction was prepared according
to simple rules. In order to make a best-seller, one had to choose a topical issue, provide
the author of the work with an expressive personality, fuel the reader’s appetites for a long
time and skillfully, flavour the whole thing with a scandal, match with the spirit of the
age, and, last but not least, use the power of the modern media. Using all these measures,
often given only by a prayer, but “authenticated” by the media, resulted in a few-month
promotion pretending to be a big, maybe the biggest debate on the reportage, literature and
the borders of decency, since several dozen years. The case of biography of Kapuściński,
according to the author, can be treated as yet another manifestation of a “gross power of
the modern media”
"Szachinszach" Ryszarda Kapuścińskiego : paradoksy społecznego odbioru
The article author discusses the Polish and international reception of Shah of Shahs, analyses the differences between Polish and English versions and compares its reception with that of The Emperor, published a few years earlier. The article aims at presenting different models of reading, from approving (Helena Zaworska, Salman Rushdie, Zoltan Biró, Hooman Majd) to highly critical (Abbas Milani). The article author argues with Milani, compares his accusations with Kapuściński’s text and refers to various publications on the history of Iran. In response to Milani’s criticism, she also discusses the conceptions of Annales school of historiosophy that inspired Kapuścinski’s own image of history
Exegi monumentum. The last series of Melchior Wańkowicz’s “The Anode and Cathode”
In the article „The Anode and Cathode”. The last collection of Melchior Wańkowicz’s reportages the author discusses a two-volume set of lifelong journalism by Wańkowicz, rarely commented by researchers. This series has been prepared by Thomas Jodełka-Burzecki according to the general guidelines of the author. It is one of the collections composed at the end of his life, such as From Stołpce to Cairo, By the four climates 1912-1972, and even La Fontaine’ Decanter or War and Pen. This astonishing proliferation of reportages’ selection can be explained by a presentiment of approximating death and the desire to systematize his workshop. The author believes that within the created set of cycles The Anode and Cathode is composed in a most convincing way: it is
a collection of press prewar reports from the Easter borderlands of Poland, reportages from journeys undertaken both in the country and abroad, descriptions of exile and emigration during the World War II, as well as articles demonstrating the writer's concern about human values, literature (mainly: non fictional), which in total gives an image of the writer involved competently, honestly and thoroughly in the patriotic issues
A Swamp House. On Metaphors of Roots in Ryszard Kapuściński’s Biography and Work
The author deals with the subject of the reporter’s house, lost either because of judgements of history or as a consequence of professional choices. Employing an example of Ryszard Kapuściński’s work, she ponders on how the loss of home and attitude towards this space affected the reporter’s writing. She presents the metaphor of home in three aspects: material structure, family relationships as well as common values.Uniwersytet Śląski w Katowicach9111
‘Open all, even the rusted, receptive flaps’. Melchior Wańkowicz's Journalistic Sensorium
The article discusses one of Melchior Wańkowicz's main works. His journalistic travels lead him to major countries in Europe, several countries in Asia, and some across the Atlantic. His American travels are particularly important to the writer (who wanted to make the U.S. his adoptive homeland), but his American trilogy does not belong to the author's
most successful works, which might prove that, despite his efforts,
Wańkowicz does not understand American reality. The author ascribes this to the fact that, perhaps, in contact with a technology-oriented culture, Wańkowicz's journalistic sense fades.Uniwersytet Śląski29911
Reporter żywiołów : o (prawie) całej twórczości Melchiora Wańkowicza
The article is an attempt to deal with heritage by Melchior Wańkowicz, virtually absent
in philological works. The author describes a multi‑dimensional
output written by
a father of the Polish reportage by means of the theory of four elements: the earth,
water, fire and air. Using the very perspective allows for exposing important features of
such writing (not being the subject to monographic perspectives, an abrupt changeability
and richness of materials) as well as a wild personality of the same writer. A theoretical
basis for the research samples proposed constitutes the literature of the subject connected
with the fundamental elements and a theory of elements by Gaston Bachelard
