Grotesque Realism in O.V Vijayan’s The Saga of Dharmapuri
The Saga of Dharmapuri by O.V. Vijayan is a dystopian fantasy set in the imaginary country of Dharmapuri, which could be a depiction of India or any other newly independent country in the post-colonial era. Mikhail Bakhtin in his treatise Rabelais and his World (1965) justifies the use of Grotesque Realism, a literary trope that allows the author to move away from the conventions of propriety and decency to convey messages that are real and powerful nevertheless. Usually exaggeration and hyperbole are key elements of this style. Through the centuries, literature has often been a medium through which contemporary concerns have been transmitted. This paper argues that O.V. Vijayan uses Grotesque Realism in his novel to depict the political, social and economic condition of India of the 1970s- specifically a country that was under emergency. Like all dystopian fables, The Saga of Dharmapuri has been prophetic in anticipating some of the social issues that we face even today. The paper aims at examining how Vijayan uses explicit language and scatological and sexual imagery so as to achieve this sense of realism within his novel
Service-oriented, distributed real-time systems in digital libraries
The article considers the problems of building service-oriented real-time web applications. In particular, to predict the execution time of highly loaded applications, provided that the load is stationary, it is proposed to use the Erlang model with an infinite-length queue. We also propose a new algorithm for adaptive runtime prediction. As a practical implementation, we tested our proposals on a system for performing ontology classification inference and execution time planning.Problems in programming 2013; 2: 87-9

The Concept of the Digital Play by S. Edwards in the Context of the Cultural-Historical Paradigm
The article presents an analysis of the works of S. Edwards devoted to the development of a holistic concept of digital play in the tradition of the Cultural-Historical Scientific School. The main difficulties are connected with the transformation of the idea of mediation into the context of digital technologies. We analyzed the understanding of the idea of mediation in the works of L.S. Vygotsky, A.N. Leontiev, Y. Engeström\. On the basis of the studies of O.K. Tikhomirov, O.V. Rubtsova, S.A. Smirnov, G. Rückriem and studied how the concept of mediation can be transformed in the era of digital technologies. We also analyzed the transformation of the key concepts of the cultural-historical psychology in the works of S. Edwards, such as children's play. The contemporary children's play reflects the processes of digitalization and cultural globalization of contemporary childhood. S. Edwards introduces the concept of convergent play as the leading activity of contemporary children. Convergent play is characterized by the blurring of boundaries between traditional and digital play and the integration of digital technologies into the daily lives of children. The author argues that it is necessary to create a holistic concept of digital play corresponding to the cultural-historical tradition.</p

Discotic liquid crystals: From dynamics to conductivity
The dynamics and conductivity of the discotic liquid-crystal, hexakis(n-hexylox) triphenylene (HAT6), and charge-transfer complex that it forms with 2,4,7trinitro-9-fluorenone (TNF) are studied using quasielastic neutron-scattering (QENS) and Pulse-Radiolysis Time resolved Conductivity. These two techniques measure the molecular dynamics and conductivity decay, respectively, are interpreted in terms of a single model for the relaxation kinetics for a correlating environment. Use of a single model supposes that the molecular and charge dynamics are described by the same kinetic equation, which allows description of the system behaviour in space and time when combined with fractional diffusion equation. This supposition is substantiated by relating the two systems through the dispersion parameter, I2. This enables the range of the charge mobility to be linked to the length-scale of the molecular motion from which a coupling parameter is derived. The conductivity and molecular dynamics of HAT6 and HAT6-TNF are analysed in terms of the dynamical and coupling parameters. The thermal motion of a short column of HAT6 is simulated by a molecular dynamics simulation in order to provide the correct distribution of distorted molecular units, including the effects of the alkoxy tails. Ab-initio calculations are then used to determine the electronic structure of the distorted triphenylene cores and the time dependence of the interaction between these. A compact model for the vibrational dynamics of HAT6 is derived from the combined use of inelastic neutron scattering spectroscopy and first-principles calculations. It reproduces the essential features of the vibrational dynamics and electronic structure on the aromatic core of HAT6.Applied Science
On a single degree of freedom oscillator with a time-varying mass
In this thesis the free and forced vibrations of a single degree of freedom oscillator with a periodically time-varying mass have been studied. Linear and weakly non-linear oscillator equations have been considered. The forced vibrations of the oscillator are partly due to small masses which are T-periodically hitting and leaving the oscillator with T-periodic velocities. Since these small masses stay for some time on the oscillator surface the effective mass of the oscillator and the shape of the oscillator will periodically vary in time. The effect of a damping term (in the linear oscillator equation) on the solutions also has been considered. For the free vibrations the minimal damping rates have been computed for which the oscillator is always stable. Also cases with external, harmonic forcing have been investigated in detail for the linear oscillator equation, and interesting resonance conditions have been found. As simple model to describe the rain-wind induced oscillations of a cable, an initial value problem for an oscillator equation with a Rayleigh type of non-linearity has been studied.By applying a straight-forward perturbation method the problem has been solved approximately on a time-interval of length T. In all cases studied in this thesis initial value problems for oscillator equations have been formulated. The constructed solutions on a time-interval of length T or the approximations of the solutions on the same time-interval have been used to construct maps. By using these maps (i.e. by using a system of difference equations) the stability properties of the solutions have been determined. The instability regions in the parameter space have been computed partly analytically and partly numerically. Some phase-space figures for the weakly non-linear problem have been computed numerically to show a number of interesting bifurcations, and to show the rich dynamics of the problem.Mathematical PhysicsElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

Abstract
The disbalance of pro-angiogenic and anti-angiogenic factors, hormonal balance shift in fetal growth retardation (FGR) among high-risk pregnant women plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of this pathological condition and may serve as a prognostic criterion in early pregnancy. Materials and methods. We conducted a prospective study of 88 pregnant women at 12-13 weeks of pregnancy. The pro-angiogenic placental growth factor (PIGF) and anti-angiogenic – placental soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase (sFlt-1) and their ratio (sFlt-1/PIGF coefficient) were determined. Estradiol (E), progesterone (PG), and chorionic gonadotropin (CG) were determined among the placental hormones. Results. PIGF was statistically significantly reduced in pregnant women with FGR (6,7 pg/ml) comparing to the results of group 2 (18,7 pg/ml; p˂0,05) and it was reduced comparing to group 3 (15,5 pg/ml; 0,05˂ p˂0,1). The levels of sFlt-1, by contrast, were highest among the women in group 1: (1972,3 pg/ml; p˂0,05) compared to the control group (1384,4 pg/ml) and compared to 3 group (1595,3 pg/ml; 0,05˂p˂0,1). sFlt-1/PIGF was significantly higher for patients of group 1 (596,5 units) compared to group 2 (252,2 units), р˂0,05. Conclusion. In pregnant women with hypertension of 1 and 2 degrees, which in the first trimester of pregnancy (12-13 weeks of gestation) there was the decrease in levels of PIGF, increase in sFlt-1 levels and increase in the sFlt-1/PIGF ratio, the fetal growth retardation develops in future in comparison to women without hypertension. The levels of PIGF are significantly lower and the coefficient values are higher than those ones of pregnant women with hypertension of 1st degree. The levels of placental hormones of this pathology are not statistically significantly different from the data of the control group.
