"Which images are made manifest across an artist’s practice and which are the ones that disappear? How do objects—whether seen or unseen—and the knowledge they possess traverse across place and time to avow their resistance? These are amongst the questions asked by artist Nour Bishouty in her artist’s book 1—130, a project that draws upon her ongoing research into the works of her father, Ghassan Bishouty (b. 1941 Palestine – d. 2004, Jordan). In 1—130, she borrows from methods of indexing and object classification to act as figurative codes for identification and cross-reference within the contexts of value and legacy. All the while employing paratactic strategies of text and image to understand the life and work of an artist faced with the discontinuity of deracination. 1—130 constitutes reflexive encounters with a series of 130 selected paintings and sculptures made circa 1965-2004 in Lebanon and Jordan, and concludes with an afterword by editor and curator Jacob Korczynski." -- Publisher's website

Assessment of skill and technology indicators at the macro-micro levels in Sudan

In this paper we examine skill and technology indicators at the macro and micro levels in Sudan. Different from the Sudanese literature, a novel element in our analysis is that we use new primary data from the macro and firm surveys and we provide a new contribution and fill the gap in the Sudanese literature by examining five hypotheses on the causes and consequences of low skill and technology indicators at the macro and micro levels in Sudan. We verify our first hypothesis that the interaction between the deficient educational system -caused by low quality of education- and the high share of unskilled workers leads to poor provision of training; low skill levels; skills mismatch; low transfer of knowledge/external schooling effect; weak technology indicators and dependence on foreign technologies at the micro level. We confirm our second hypothesis that the poor local technology indicators/indigenous capability to build the local technology and heavy dependence on foreign technology can be attributed to lack of R&D activities/efforts, due to a lack of funding, low skill levels, weak linkages, lack of networks systems and collaboration between universities and industry/firms, low transfer of knowledge and a lack of entrepreneur perspective. We support our third hypothesis that the transfer of knowledge/external schooling effects is successful at the micro level but unsuccessful at the macro level due to low educational qualifications and deficient educational and training systems. We confirm our fourth hypothesis that skill and technology indicators are significantly determined by firm size and industry. We support our fifth hypothesis concerning the consistency of upskilling plans at the macro-micro levels. Finally, one advantage and interesting element in our analysis is that we provide a new contribution to the Sudanese literature, since we explain the causes, consequences and interaction between the low skill and technology indicators and the transfer of knowledge. We recommend further efforts to be made to improve skill and technology indicators and transfer of knowledge at the macro and micro levels which are all essential for economic growth and development in Sudan.Skill, technology, firm size, industry, Sudan

Heart rate variability biofeedback for college students recovering from substance use disorder: a longitudinal analysis of craving changes

    No full text
Purpose: The purpose of this dissertation was to provide longitudinal evidence on heart rate variability biofeedback (HRVB) as an anti-craving intervention for college students recovering from substance use disorder (SUD). Methods: Previous studies showed promise of the therapeutic potential of HRVB to reduce substance craving. Gaps in the literature indicated the need for a longitudinal examination of craving changes that takes individual differences into consideration. Data from 46 college students recovering from SUD were used to examine craving changes before and during an eight-session HRVB intervention. Participants were assessed at four occasions in the control condition over the first 12 weeks followed by 8 occasions in the experimental condition, separated by an 11-week rest period. A longitudinal multilevel modeling approach was used with time at level-1 nested within persons at level-2. Unconditional and conditional multilevel models of change were estimated to model craving trajectories and predictor relationships over time. Results: Significant reductions in substance craving were observed during HRVB compared to waitlist. HRVB seemed to enhance the efficacy of conventional therapies by producing craving reductions that were not evident prior to the HRVB intervention despite usual treatment. A continued daily HRVB practice of more than 12 minutes was found to enhance treatment as usual outcomes and contribute to greater craving reductions over time. In our sample, younger participants seemed to be more committed to daily HRVB practice, although many did not achieve the recommended daily practice of 15 minutes twice daily. Increases in depressive symptoms were found to attenuate the effects of HRVB on craving. Anxiety and perceived stress were not significantly associated with craving in this study. The true R2 for the final model indicated that 20.5% of the variance in craving was explained by age, daily HRVB >12 minutes, and the within-person aspect of depression. Conclusions: HRVB is an easily accessible and affordable intervention that shows promise as a complementary anti-craving intervention. The outcomes of this study have implications for hypothesized HRVB practice-dose relationships. Nurses may help persons recovering from SUD to better manage the symptom of craving by the routine and strategic use of personal HRVB practice.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical referencesby Nour Alaya

HISTORIOGRAPHY AS CRITIQUE OF IDEOLOGY: THE LEGACY OF HOBBES IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS THEORY

    No full text
Our purpose is to analyse how Hobbes associates theoretical with historical inquiry, and how a reconstruction of Hobbes can solve some of the theoretical problems of today. To begin, in the first part, we analyse how Hobbes justifies his methodology of thinking both historically and theoretically. Then, in the second part, we analyse how this way of thinking allows Hobbes to develop his criticism of ideology and evolutionism, a decisive aspect of the importance of Hobbes in international relations. Finally, in the third part, we can verify how some contemporary theories fall prey to the same difficulties with which Hobbes struggle
