Seismic fragility of reinforced concrete girder bridges using Bayesian belief network
Infrastructure owners and operators, or governmental agencies, need rapid screening tools to prioritize detailed risk assessment and retrofit resources allocation. This paper provides one such tool, for use by highway administrations, based on Bayesian belief network (BBN) and aimed at replacing so-called generic or typological seismic fragility functions for reinforced concrete girder bridges. Resources for detailed assessments should be allocated to bridges with highest consequence of damage, for which site hazard, bridge fragility, and traffic data are needed. The proposed BBN based model is used to quantify seismic fragility of bridges based on data that can be obtained by visual inspection and engineering drawings. Results show that the predicted fragilities are of sufficient accuracy for establishing relative ranking and prioritizing. While the actual data and seismic hazard employed to train the network (establishing conditional probability tables) refer to the Italian bridge stock, the network structure and engineering judgment can easily be adopted for bridges in different geographical locations
EnStarting from the analysis of a rich and varied source, the Book of Instructiones of king Frederick of Aragon, recently discovered and soon published, and continuing on the way of Francesco Storti's researches on the neapolitan army in the second half of the fifteenth century, as well as of those by Alessio Russo on the last phase of the aragonese Kingdom, we decided to investigate even more deeply the matrices, the perspectives and the results of the military experiments wanted by the monarchy, which were among the most advanced and ideologically dense. In this first part of a study conceived as complementary, in addition to providing an appropriate introduction to the source, I tried to highlight the different provincial realities of the Kingdom of Frederick, with their specific characteristics and strategic needs, and to outline a specific project of militarization of the territory and provincialization of the army
The Pottesman Collection in the British Museum. Early Dynastic and Sargonic administrative texts. With an Appendix on a Palmyrene Inscription
The British Museum houses a small collection of six cuneiform tablets and a Palmyrene dedicatory inscription purchased in 1987 from the private collection of Solomon Pottesman. The aim of the present contribution is to provide a catalog of this lot and an edition of the so far unpublished cuneiform texts. In the appendix, Alessio Agostini added the edition of the Palmyrene inscription, which would have otherwise gone beyond the capabilities of the present author

Handheld-Impedance-Measurement System with seven-decade capability and potentiostatic function
This paper describes design and test of a new impedance-measurement system for nonlinear devices that exhibits a seven-decade range and works down to a frequency of 0.01 Hz. The system is specifically designed for electrochemical measurements, but the proposed architecture can be employed in many other fields where flexible signal generation and analysis are required. The system employs an unconventional signal generator based on two pulsewidth modulation (PWM) oscillators and an autocalibration system that allows uncertainties of less than 3% to be obtained over a range of 1 kΩ to 100 GΩ. A synchronous demodulation processing allows the noise superimposed to the low-amplitude input signals to be made negligibl
Search for geo-neutrinos and rare nuclear processes with Borexino
Borexino was designed to measure solar neutrinos in the MeV or sub-MeV energy range. The unprecedented radiopurity of the detector has allowed the detection of geo-neutrinos and the determination of competitive limits on the rate of rare or forbidden processes. In this paper, we review the basic principle of neutrinos and antineutrinos detection in Borexino and we describe the results of the geo-neutrinos measurements and their implications. Then we summarize the search for Borexino events correlated with gamma ray bursts and for axion induced signals, and the limits achieved on Pauli forbidden transitions and on the electron charge conservation. </jats:p
A Bayesian Network model to assess seismic risk of reinforced concrete girder bridges
Fragility curves are required for the probabilistic evaluation of performance of an earthquakedamaged transportation network. Recently, fragility curves of several hundreds of bridges have been obtained
via 3D inelastic response history analysis, and then used to calibrate a Bayesian network (BN) model of seismic fragility. This paper investigates the sensitivity of network-level results to the use of such a BN-based
surrogate fragility model. Bridge damages were evaluated with both the exact FEM-based and the approximate BN-based fragilities, and network flow analysis was carried out on the damaged network for thousands
of seismic events in several Monte Carlo simulations. Even though the BN-based model does not perform in
an equally good manner over all bridges, overall more accurate results at the network level were observed, indicating that network performance does not in general depend on any single bad match between reference and
approximate fragility curves
