Sanne Derks onderzocht hoe de pelgrims in hun Mariadevotie uiting gaven aan hun ervaringen met verschillende vormen van sociale ongelijkheid in het dagelijks leven. Ze laat zien hoe de pelgrims zich tot de Maagd van Urkupiña wenden met problemen van armoede en klassenongelijkheid. Ook genderongelijkheid speelt een belangrijke rol: talloze Boliviaanse vrouwen zoeken steun bij Maria om met huiselijk geweld om te gaan.
