Validation of the Malay version of the Parental Bonding Instrument among Malaysian youths using exploratory factor analysis
Background: Parenting behaviour is culturally sensitive. The aims of this study were (1) to translate the Parental Bonding Instrument into Malay (PBI-M) and (2) to determine its factorial structure and validity among the Malaysian population.
Methods: The PBI-M was generated from a standard translation process and comprehension testing. The validation study of the PBI-M was administered to 248 college students aged 18 to 22 years.
Results: Participants in the comprehension testing had difficulty understanding negative items. Five translated double negative items were replaced with five positive items with similar meanings. Exploratory factor analysis showed a three-factor model for the PBI-M with acceptable reliability. Four negative items (items 3, 4, 8, and 16) and item 19 were omitted from the final PBI-M list because of incorrect placement or low factor loading (< 0.32). Out of the final 20 items of the PBI-M, there were 10 items for the care factor, five items for the autonomy factor and five items for the overprotection factor. All the items loaded positively on their respective factors.
Conclusion: The Malaysian population favoured positive items in answering questions. The PBI-M confirmed the three-factor model that consisted of care, autonomy and overprotection. The PBI-M is a valid and reliable instrument to assess the Malaysian parenting style. Confirmatory factor analysis may further support this finding
Dystrophia myotonica with hypercapnic respiratory failure – local challenges and ethical dilemmas / Muhammad Amin Ibrahim ... [et al.]
Dystrophia myotonica type 1 (DM1) is an adult-onset progressive form of muscular dystrophy which eventually lead to respiratory f ailure. Non-invasive home mechanical ventilation (HMV) f or these patients could result in a reduced risk of morbidity and mortality. The f ollowing case report describes the management of respiratory f ailure in a patient with DM, and the challenges that come with it especially in our Malaysian settings
Gender Difference in the Influence of Family Interaction and Parenting Behaviours on Youth Sexual Intention
This paper presents the differences in family interaction and parenting behaviours and their influence on sexual intention among male and female youths aged 18 to 22 years. The results presented are based on data collected from unmarried college students in Klang Valley, Malaysia. Despite being in a country where premarital sexual activity is not an accepted behaviour, 18% of the 422 male and 1.4% of the 566 female students indicated their intention to perform sexual activity. Compared to females, males had more allowance of autonomy from parents and lesser parental monitoring, paternal care, parent-youth communication on sexual issues, and family connectedness. Both genders perceived that they received similar levels of parental control. In male youths, having high maternal control (OR: 1.19, 95% CI: 1.03–1.38) and family modelling behaviour (OR: 2.25, 95% CI: 1.19–4.25) increased their odds of having sexual intention while having high parent-youth communication on sex (OR: 0.89, 95% CI: 0.81–0.99) reduced their odds of having sexual intention. For female youths, having a high level of family connectedness (OR: 0.76, 95% CI: 0.59–0.97) was a protective factor against sexual intention. In conclusion, sexual intention is higher among males compared to females. The influence of family interaction and parenting behaviours on youth sexual decision varied across gender. This study highlighted the possibility of using different parenting approaches in tackling premarital sexual activity among youths
Fabrication of plasmonic thin film via DC sputtering with optics based assessment for trasmittance, absorbance and resonance
A plasmonic thin film is potentially to be used with the advancement in optical biosensor. It is a label free without a need of fluorescent, chemiluminescent, radioisotope and etc. It is crucial to design a low cost biosensor that is easily fabricated at precise sizes and density. This paper reported a fabrication for copper and gold thin film on a glass substrate with a magnetron sputtering. The objectives are to: 1-Fabricate the thin film, 2- Develop the optics setup, 3-Evaluate the thin films and 4-Exhibit the optical resonance. Seven glass slides were coated with six copper and remaining with gold at different sputtering time. The time was varied from 280 sec to 980 sec while Argon gas and DC power were maintained respectively at 80 sccm and 130 watt. Later, the optics based was employed for assessing the film thicknesses. The thin films fabrication indicates different thicknesses were achieved at various sputtering time. Given y is a thicknesses and x is a sputtering time, respectively the copper and gold thin film were changed quantitatively at y= 28.335e0.0005x and y= 0.25x. Qualitatively, spectral transmittance and absorbance were changed to the thicknesses of the thin films. The plasmonic resonance was achieved with gold thin film at 50 nm thicknesses. The resonance sensitivity was decreases as the thin films thicknesses were increases

Perinatal mental health module for nurses
In low- and middle-income countries, like Malaysia, as many as 1 in 5 new mothers experience some type of maternal mental health disorders including perinatal depression and anxiety. However, many cases remain under-detected and under-treated due to stigma and a lack of awareness on perinatal mental health. Nurses, especially those working in the primary care setting, are frequently meeting with antenatal mothers throughout their pregnancy course. However, they have a lack of professional development on education and skills related to perinatal mental health. This invited slot discusses on the perinatal mental health module for nurses to improve their care and management, reduce the stigmatization, increase awareness, avoid delay of care, identifying patient’s symptoms & assessment and build confidence and skills in assessing, supporting and referring mothers with perinatal mental disorders
Cross-cultural adaptation and validation of Bahasa Malaysia version of the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q)
Introduction: As eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and others are generally becoming more
prevalent, it is essential to have a culturally accepted and locally validated questionnaire that is able to
detect abnormal eating habits.
Objective: To translate the Eating Disorders Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q) into Bahasa
Malaysia (BM) and to determine the construct validity, reliability and other psychometric properties of
the BM version.
Method: Two parallel forward and backward translations were done in BM in accordance to guideline.
Its validation was determined by using confirmatory factor analysis among 298 secondary school
children.
Results: The BM EDE-Q had very good internal consistency with global Cronbach’s alpha value
of 0.879. For construct validity, majority of the items managed to produce values of more than 0.4 for
confirmatory factor analysis with four unforced distinct factors detected.
Conclusions: Analyses of reliability and validity of this BM version of EDE-Q yielded satisfactory
results. The BM version produced in this study had good psychometric properties and it is applicable to
the Malaysian population. Findings indicated that cultural factors in eating habits certainly influences the
effort to adapt the questionnaire within a Malaysian setting

Association between social-cognitive factors and intention towards sexual activity among schoolgoing late adolescents in Kuantan, Malaysia
This was a cross-sectional study to identify the association between sociocognitive factors (permissive attitude, social-norms, and self-efficacy) and intention towards sexual activity among 466 Malaysian school-going late adolescents (aged 18–19 years) in Kuantan, Malaysia. Majority were
females (64.4%), Malays (67.4%) and Muslims (68.2%). Simple logistic regression from data collected by self-administered validated Youth Sexual-Intention Questionnaire (YSI-Q) showed significantly increase risk of having sexual intention for each unit increase in permissive attitude, social-norms and self-efficacy scores with the odds ratio (OR) of 1.424,
1.303 and 1.215, respectively. On the other hand, multivariate logistic regression resulted in male, non-Malay, ever-smoker students and permissive attitude showing significantly higher risk towards having sexual intention with the OR of 0.163 (male was the reference group), 5.110, 3.288 and 1.236, respectively. In order to reduce risky sexual behaviour
among adolescents, school-based health education is essential
