Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
CHANGEMENT, TENDANCE ET VARIABILITE CLIMATIQUE EN HAITI DURANT LES 1000 DERNIERES ANNEES A PARTIR DES PROCESSUS ORGANO-MINERAUX DU LAC AZUEI
Few studies on the reconstruction of climate change in Haiti have indicated that there have beenchanges in precipitation patterns over the past millennium. However, climatic mechanisms havenot been proposed to elucidate them. This thesis aims to study the environmental and climatevariability in Haiti during the last 1000 years in order to make significant progress inunderstanding these variabilities at different time scales and the associated ocean-atmospheremechanisms. To achieve this objective, the work is based on a multi-proxy and multi-periodapproach with sedimentological, geochemical and mineralogical analyzes of a well-datedsediment core taken from Lake Azuei (Haiti). The temporal variations of the different proxyanalyzed are grouped into four periods: the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA, 1000-1100 CE;subdivided into MCA1 (1000-1050 CE) and MCA2 (1050-1100 CE)), the transition periodbetween the Medieval Climate Anomaly and the Little Ice Age (MCA-LIA, 1100-1400 CE), theLittle Ice Age (LIA, 1400-1800 CE), and the Modern Warm Period (CWP, 1800 to our days).The MCA1 and LIA periods are marked by a decrease in the sedimentation rate and a decrease indetrital inputs linked to a decrease in precipitation. There was more denitrification related tosuboxic conditions as a result of an increase in lake water temperature that is related to dryconditions. On the other hand, during MCA2 there was an increase in the sedimentation rate andan increase in detrital inputs into the lake which are due to an increase in precipitation andtherefore an environment characterized by humid conditions. There was also a decrease indenitrification related to more organic matter input. The MCA-LIA transition period wascharacterized by unstable environmental and climatic conditions, with alternating wet and dryconditions. During PCM there is a gradual increase in the sedimentation rate due to the input ofsediment into the lake during rainy periods as a result of erosion in the watershed as a result ofanthropogenic activities. The results showed that Haiti has experienced progressively drierconditions over the past millennium and that rainfall is related to mean changes in oceantemperature, Atlantic and Pacific, through the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO), the ElNino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). Temporal correlation of our data with other Caribbean paleoclimate records shows that the trends observedin Lake Azuei were controlled by regional climate, likely associated with changes in the positionof the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). This research has therefore provided new detailedinformation on the environmental variations of Lake Azuei and hydro-climatic in Haiti duringthe last millennium.Très peu d’études sur la reconstruction des changements climatiques en Haïti ont indiqué qu'il y a eu deschangements dans le régime des précipitations au cours du dernier millénaire. Cependant, des mécanismes et modes de variabilités climatiques n’ont été proposés pour les élucider. Cette thèse a donc pour objectifd’étudier la variabilité environnementale et climatique en Haïti durant les 1000 dernières années afin deprogresser de manière significative dans la compréhension de ces variabilités à différentes échelles de tempset les mécanismes océan-atmosphère associés. Pour atteindre cet objectif, le travail est basé sur uneapproche multi‐proxy et multi‐périodes avec des analyses sédimentologiques, géochimiques etminéralogiques d’une carotte de sédiment bien datée prélevée dans le lac Azuei (Haïti). Les variationstemporelles des différents proxys analysés sont regroupées en quatre périodes : l'Anomalie ClimatiqueMédiévale (ACM ou MCA, 1000 et 1100 CE ; subdivisée en MCA1 (1000-1050 CE) et MCA2 (1050-1100CE)), la période transition entre l'Anomalie Climatique Médiévale et le Petit Age Glaciaire (MCA-LIA, 1100-1400 CE), le Petit Age Glaciaire (PAG ou LIA, 1400 à 1800 CE), et la Période Chaude Moderne (PCM ouCWP, 1800 à nos jours). Les périodes MCA1 et LIA sont marquées par une diminution du taux desédimentation et une diminution d’apports détritiques liés à une diminution des précipitations. Il y avait plus dedénitrification liée à des conditions suboxiques en conséquence d’une augmentation de la température del'eau du lac qui est liée à des conditions sèches. Par contre durant la MCA2 il y avait une augmentation dutaux de sédimentation et une augmentation des apports détritiques dans le lac qui sont dues à uneaugmentation des précipitations et donc un environnement caractérisé par des conditions humides. Il y avaitaussi une diminution de denitrification liée au plus d’apport de matière organique. La période transition MCALIAa été caractérisée par des conditions environnementales et climatiques instables, avec une alternancedes conditions humides et sèches. Durant la PCM il y a une augmentation progressive du taux desédimentions due à l'apport de sédiments dans le lac pendant les périodes de pluie en conséquence del’érosion dans le bassin versant suite aux activités anthropiques. Les résultats ont montré qu’Haïti a connudes conditions progressivement plus sèches au cours du dernier millénaire et que les précipitations sont liéesaux changements moyens dans la température des océans, Atlantique et Pacifique, à travers l’OscillationMultidécennale de l’Atlantique (OMA), l’Oscillation Sud d’el Nino (ENSO) et l’Oscillation décennale duPacifique (ODP ou PDO). La corrélation temporelle de nos données avec d'autres enregistrementspaléoclimatiques des Caraïbes montre que les tendances observées dans le lac Azuei étaient contrôlées parle climat régional, probablement associé à des changements dans la position de la Zone de ConvergenceInter Tropicale (ZCIT). Cette recherche a donc fourni de nouvelles informations détaillées sur les variationsenvironnementales du lac Azuei et hydro-climatiques en Haïti au cours du dernier millénaire
