Heritability and Linkage Analysis of Appendicitis Utilizing Age at Onset

    No full text
Appendicitis usually afflicts the young, but there is a large tail in the distribution of onset age. The genetics of this disease are still not well understood. A heritability analysis and genome wide linkage analysis of a large twin dataset was undertaken. Treating age of onset of appendicitis as a censored survival trait revealed a heritability of 0.21, and found evidence of linkage to Chromosome 1p37.3. External interventions and the duration of civil wars

    No full text
The authors combine an empirical model of external intervention, with a theoretical model of civil war duration. Their empirical model of intervention allows them to analyze civil war duration, using"expected"rather than"actual"external intervention as an explanatory variable in the duration model. Unlike previous studies, they find that external intervention is positively associated with the duration of civil war. They distinguish partial third-party interventions that extend the length of war, from multilateral"peace"operations, which have a mandate to restore peace without taking sides - and which typically take place at war's end, or at least when both sides have agreed to a cease-fire. In a future paper, the authors will examine whether partial third-party interventions - whatever their effect on a war's duration - increase the risk of war's recurrence. If that proves true, then even if interventions reduce the length of civil war, they may do so at the cost of further destabilizing the political system, and sowing the seeds of future rebellion.Children and Youth,Peace&Peacekeeping,Post Conflict Reconstruction,Post Conflict Reconstruction,International Affairs,Post Conflict Reconstruction,Social Conflict and Violence,Peace&Peacekeeping,Post Conflict Reconstruction,International Affairs

Competition Policy in Network Industries: An Introduction

    No full text
The author discusses issues of the application of antitrust law and regulatory rules to network industries. In assessing the application of antitrust in network industries, we analyze a number of relevant features of network industries and the way in which antitrust law and regulatory rules can affect them. These relevant features include (among others) network effects, market structure, market share and profits inequality, choice of technical standards, relationship between the number of active firms and social benefits, existence of market power, leveraging of market power in complementary markets, and innovation races. The author finds that there are often significant differences on the effects of application of antitrust law in network and non-network industries.

Theory of Optimal Taxation and Current Tax Policy in Pakistan’s Agriculture

    No full text
public finance into the mould of classical welfare economics by emphasising minimisation of dead weight losses resulting from the imposition of a tax or faulty tax structure. As such, these modern theories have much in common with the traditional approach in terms of efficiency and equity. In spite of this, however, the differences remain. For example, the former theories adhere strictly to the norms of classical welfare economics which treats individual consumers as utility maximisers where improvements in welfare involve change that makes one individual better-off without making someone else worse-off [Stern (1987)]. In contrast to the emphasis of traditional theories on lump-sum taxes, the optimum tax literature is concerned with the implication of using non-lump-sum taxes which have a wider range and therefore more useful to the policy-maker. The recent work on normative tax theory looks at the impact of taxation on individual decisions and the trade off between raising revenues or redistributing tax burdens and the efficiency losses [Atkinson (1987)]. Finally, the optimal tax literature may be more pragmatic in its approach than traditional works as it realistically deals with government objectives and constraints and combines them into models that are sufficiently rich to allow for differences between people regarding income and expenditure patterns.

Vykladačská činnost Mikuláše z Lyry v Postille litteralis a její význam v křesťanské exegetické tradici Exegetical Appoaches of Nicholas de Lyra in Postilla litteralis and Ins Role in Christian Tradition Štěpán Lisý The present work studies variability in Nicholas of Lyra's exegesis in his Postilla litteralis and its role in Christian misionary activities among Jews and Muslims. Lyra's postila is significantly influenced by commentary of Rabbi Shlomo ben Yitzchak. In Postilla litteralis there is a minor influence of commentaries of David Kimchi (Radak), Abraham Ibn Ezra and Raymundus Martini as well. Also in the study the author examines the impact of Postilla litteralis on later scholars and existing numerous manuscripts of Lyra's works in Bohemian and Moravian lands

Optimal standoff imaging using structured laser illumination and graphical models

Thesis: Ph. D., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2014.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Cataloged from student-submitted PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (pages 241-246).Structured illumination can be used to form images without using a lens or a detector array. A series of spatially-structured laser pulses is cast on the scene of interest, and a single-detector power measurement is made on the light each pulse returns from the scene. There has been significant interest in the "ghost imaging" configuration, in which the spatial patterns are randomly generated-e.g., by driving the pixels of a spatial light modulator with independent, identically-distributed pseudorandom inputs-and the sequence of measurements is correlated with reference versions of those patterns to image the scene. This naive reconstruction, however, is far from optimal for standoff imaging, for which rough-surfaced objects create laser speckle in the measurements. We develop a graphical model that encompasses the probabilistic relationships in structured-illumination standoff imaging along with an approximate message-passing algorithm for belief propagation to perform optimal scene reconstruction. This approach lets us accurately model the statistics of speckled images, photon detection, and atmospheric turbulence, as well as incorporate intelligent priors for the scene that capture the inherent structure of real-world objects. The result is state-of-the-art scene reconstructions.by Nicholas David Hardy.Ph. D

Los derechos de las plantas: aportes teológicos en la teoría de la justicia de Nicholas Wolterstorff

    No full text
In this article, I present the concept of rights of the plants found in Nicholas Wolterstorff\u27s theory of justice. In addition, I make an analysis from a theological perspective, regarding its possible contribution to the understanding on ecology, taking the same framework used by the author: the biblical scriptures of the Old and New Testament. Finally, I outline some reflections of my own following the same line of thinking as that found in the above theory, both in a proposal of quasi-rights and as a solution to the incapacity of moral agency.
