Layered Sustainability. Design Inference for Circular Economy in Additive Manufacturing
This study explores Additive Manufacturing (AM) as a pivotal technology for achieving circularity and sustainability through design-thinking approaches. Focusing on Design interventions in AM processes, the research integrates theoretical foundations with practical applications via case studies analysis. By employing a case-based reasoning method across micro, meso, macro, and meta (5M) scales, the study provides insights and adaptive guidelines for transformative interventions that drive circular changes towards Circular Economy (CE) models in AM. The 5M framework, based on the Design for Sustainability Evolutionary Framework, guides case study classification, while the ICF model deconstructs case data into conceptual keywords, illustrating interconnected relationships across 5M levels
Disgusting materials? Experimental research design on the social desirability of primordial and decomposed materials
The paper focuses on the sustainability of circular materials and processes as part of the transition towards sustainable practices, investigating public acceptance and perception of excrement-based and decomposed materials through a pilot experimental survey. Innovative materials and processes utilizing alternative resources, including animal by-products and natural biological systems, highlight their potential in reducing waste production and environmental impact. However, their widespread adoption faces cultural, technical, and aesthetic challenges. Through a pilot survey, research hypotheses have been tested with the aim to evaluate and establish (or reveal) the causal link between public support to such materials and aesthetic factors of bio-based and bio-manufactured materials. The results suggest that there is still limited research support for a comprehensive understanding of circular materials, and further education initiatives and involvement of consumers in research and development processes is needed to increase acceptance and adoption of these extra-ordinary resources
A matter of balance. User-centred design methods to enhance sensory perception and understanding.
The research explores the intersection of design and neurosensory sciences by adopting a synaesthetic approach to enhance olfactory perception through the design of data and information visualisations. The study exploits multisensory visualisations to represent complex olfactory data by translating complex sensory data into accessible and interactive visualisations. A case study on alcoholic beverages demonstrates the effectiveness of this approach. Visualisations not only allow users to explore the sensory profiles of various products, but also facilitate a deeper understanding of olfactory stimuli. By providing multiple layers of information, filters and intuitive interfaces, this design-oriented approach enables individuals to identify and appreciate aromas during tasting experiences. This research suggests the emergence of a new interdisciplinary role in design, the Sensorialist Designer, who combines insights from neurosensory sciences with user-centred design methods to enhance sensory perception and understanding
Asimmetrie informative in economia circolare. Un’investigazione di design nelle reti sociali digitali / Information Asymmetries in the Circular Economy. A Design Investigation in Digital Network Spaces
In digital spaces, communication about circularity is influenced by dynamics of cultural dominance and polarisation. This study analyses textual and visual traces on two case studies of digital platforms to understand the dynamics of collective circular memory. Through methods of Digital Design such as Data Visualization and Vanity Metrics, critical issues such as interpretative homogeneity on Wikipedia and the dominance of a few entries on Instagram emerge. The absence of diversified cultural representations limits the dissemination of structured and inclusive knowledge. The study emphasises the need for interdisciplinary and participatory communication models, highlighting spaces for project intervention to counter circular disinformation phenomena.*Negli spazi digitali, la comunicazione sulla circolarità è influenzata da dinamiche di dominanza culturale e polarizzazioni.
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
(Re)Active Materials.Well-Being’s Concept Evolution and Advanced Material Innovations
The article aims to read the transition of material design approaches identifying an evolutive models with major prin-ciples and contribution into the health improvement through material innovations. The analysis follows a bottom-up approach, using a case-based reasoning methodology to study well-being concept evolution and identify new mate-rial experimentations frontiers within three approaches: Imitative, Augmentative, and Mutational. The contribution of the article reflects and suggests the introduction of new material design approaches to manage the design of advanced materials’ behaviuors in their future development, highlighting their potential impact on user satisfaction and acceptance, collective welfare improvement, performance optimization, and environmental concerns
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
