Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Through a triad of comics starring female child and youth characters with functional diversity, the researcher emphasizes the eradication of restrictive conceptions of difference as a problem that must be neutralized and delves into the possibilities of the comic for literary and inclusive education and the renewal of the classroom canon.Frente a la distorsionada imagen que de la diversidad funcional desde la literatura infantil y juvenil se ha transmitido, la autora investiga sobre su representación en el cómic contemporáneo como espacio clave para el diálogo con el lector. A través de una tríada de cómics protagonizados por personajes femeninos infantiles y juveniles con diversidad funcional, la investigadora incide en la erradicación de restrictivas concepciones de la diferencia como problema que debe ser neutralizado y profundiza en las posibilidades de la historieta para la educación literaria e inclusiva y la renovación del canon de aula.
Abstract
Faced with the distorted image of functional diversity that has been transmitted from children's and young people's literature, the author investigates its representation in contemporary comics as a key space for dialogue with the reader. Through a triad of comics starring female child and youth characters with functional diversity, the researcher emphasizes the eradication of restrictive conceptions of difference as a problem that must be neutralized and delves into the possibilities of the comic for literary and inclusive education and the renewal of the classroom canon.

Bases para una genealogía de la no-ficción en el cómic / Bases for a Genealogy of Non-Fiction in Comics
Get PDFResumen: El cómic de no-ficción se ha incorporado con éxito a la práctica educativa debido, entre otros factores, a su potencial para la transmisión de información de forma objetiva al receptor, unido a su riqueza y diversidad estilística y temática. No obstante, su tradición e historia no ha sido abordada de forma específica en la investigación en cómic, dada la complejidad de establecer límites precisos entre las concreciones de no ficción desarrolladas y, por tanto, para la definición de diferentes taxonomías. Por este motivo, los investigadores analizamos, desde las definiciones más representativas del género, su evolución a partir de las distintas formas de representación de la realidad desde la expresión dibujada, con el objetivo de la búsqueda cronológica de una genealogía que identifique los orígenes del cómic de no ficción como parte de la producción artística y cultural. La investigación aquí realizada permite conectar desde las primeras formas de narración dibujada hasta el cómic documental actual, identificando diferentes ejemplos claves en su evolución desde las primeras expresiones en la Edad Media a los primeros cómics de divulgación del mediados del siglo XX, creando vínculos y relaciones que permiten su inclusión en el aula desde diferentes perspectivas.
Abstract: Non-fiction comics have successfully integrated into educational practice, taking advantage of their increased relevance and thematic diversity. However, it is essential for their proper treatment to understand the connection of this form of comics with its tradition and history. In this work, the evolution of this form of comics from various representations of reality through drawn expression is analyzed, starting from taxonomic definitions of the genre. The objective is to chronologically trace a genealogy that identifies the origins of non-fiction comics as part of artistic and cultural production. This research, conducted broadly in its criteria, allows for connecting from the earliest forms of drawn narration to contemporary documentary comics, identifying different key examples in their evolution from the first expressions in the Middle Ages to the early 20th-century educational comics. This establishes links and relationships that facilitate their inclusion in the classroom as a didactic tool from various perspectives
