authorPurpose: Porcelain aorta is an indication for axillofemoral bypass. However, the procedure has definitive flaws. We present a new method for achievement of aortofemoral bypass. Methods: The portion of the distal aorta for anastomosis is wrapped with a double polytetrafluoroethylene mesh and fixed to the adventitia with continuous sutures. The adventitia of the anastomotic site is cut over the mesh until the calcified surface is disclosed. Margins of the mesh and the peeled adventitia are fixed along the anastomotic margin with continuous sutures. After the aorta and distal arteries are occluded with balloon catheters, an opening on the bared calcification is made with an airdrill and enlarged with a laminectomy rongeur. The anastomosis is performed between a graft and the mesh-reinforced adventitia with continuous sutures. Over 6 years, this method has been applied to nine patients with porcelain aorta who are diabetic or undergoing dialysis. The indications were disabling claudication in three patients and limb salvage in six patients. Results: No anastomotic complications or operative deaths were seen, and satisfactory mid-term results were obtained, with follow-up ranging from 3 to 62 months after surgery. One patient died of coronary heart disease 3 years after surgery, but the grafts retained a good function. Conclusion: This method is safe and effective, and more liberal application of this method may help improve outcome and quality of life
Working memory capacity: Is there a bilingual advantage?
No full textabstract: Previous studies suggest that bilinguals have certain executive function advantages over monolinguals. However, few studies have examined specific working memory (WM) differences between monolinguals and bilinguals using complex span tasks. In the current study, 52 bilingual and 53 monolingual speakers were administered simple and complex WM span tasks, including a backward digit-span task, standard operation span tasks and a non-verbal symmetry span task. WM performance was a strong predictor of performance on other WM tasks, whereas bilingual status was not. The use of virtual assistants is increasing every day, as a technological tool that is marketed as a necessity to assist in making our modern lives more efficient. These tools are designed to help us with daily tasks such as searching for information, reading emails, writing messages, making calls and scheduling meetings with others. The most popular examples “Siri” or “Alexa” have been created with specific gendered characteristics and behavior as the author points out “virtual assistants are very obviously gendered. Siri and Alexa both have female names”, (Fellows, forthcoming 2022) designed with a personality of submissive and serviceable, as the author mentions “they portray a gender binary dominant-submissive relationship, positioning the user in the dominant position, and they play out subordination as feminine.” (Fellows, forthcoming 2022)Not peer reviewe

Immunosuppression with FK506 in rat arterial allografts: Fate of allogeneic endothelial cells
No full textAbstractPurpose: This study clarified the efficacy of low-dose FK506 and the possibility of discontinuing the use of FK506. Methods: Fresh carotid arteries were allografted from ACI rats to Lewis rats. FK506 (0.2 mg/kg/day) was given intramuscularly from day 3 after transplantation until the rats were killed (group III), or it was given for 4 weeks and then discontinued (group IV). Isogeneic (group I) and allogeneic (group II) models served as untreated control groups. Grafts were harvested on days 0, 1, 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, 70, and 105 after transplantation. Histological evaluation and measurement of the endothelial cell (EC)-covered area were performed by means of scanning electron microscopy . Results: In group I, ECs were denuded immediately after transplantation and subsequently regenerated within 2 weeks. In group II, after denudation and regeneration of ECs, massive leukocyte adhesion and subsequent destruction of regenerated ECs, followed by intimal hyperplasia, were observed. In group III, FK506 suppressed rejection almost completely, without intimal hyperplasia. In group IV, severe rejection and denudation of regenerated intima appeared 2 weeks after the use of FK506 ended. Conclusion: The denudation and regeneration of ECs may play an important role in the process of rejection and graft performance. FK506 proved to be successful in rat arterial allografting, and ECs of donor origin could survive on the allograft as long as FK506 was effective; however, cessation of the use of FK506 resulted in severe destruction of intima. To prevent allograft failure, long-term administration of an immunosuppressant is essential. (J Vasc Surg 1999;29:694-702.

The author offers a general overview of the cultural background in which such works were created and examines how these comics can be read within the local pop-culture. Afterwards, she presents three different mangaka’s approaches to Classics – Osamu Tezuka, Go Nagai and Hideo Azuma – in order to understand the role that the Greco-Roman heritage assumes within this production.Cet article se propose d’analyser les premières apparitions de thèmes antiques dans l’univers manga japonais, en donnant tout d’abord une vue d’ensemble du contexte culturel de création de ces œuvres, avant de voir de quelle manière la pop culture locale pouvait les interpréter. Il s’agira ensuite d’étudier trois approches différentes de mangaka : celles d’Osamu Tezuka, Go Nagai et Hideo Azuma, afin de comprendre le rôle joué par l’héritage gréco-romain dans ces productions

Przez siedem lat Azuma i jego prawnicy próbowali udowodnić, że opisany przebieg wydarzeń jest prawdziwy i możliwy do wykonania; sąd jednak orzekł na korzyść powoda, który miał dokonać się brutalnego morderstwa. Autorka podejmuje próbę umiejscowienia sprawy Azumy w kontekście pamięci o masakrze nankińskiej w Japonii oraz analizę bezpośrednich następstw wyroku na tle relacji chińsko-japońskich. W pracy zawarto również opis recepcji postaci Azumy w oczach Chińczyków i Japończyków.The article introduces the figure of Azuma Shirō (1912-2006) - a Japanese man who participated in the Nanjing massacre and who had been actively contributing to raising awareness of the crimes committed during this period - and the legal proceedings resulting from accusing him of citing an allegedly false story in his book. For seven years Azuma and his lawyers have been trying to prove that the described course of events is true and feasible, but the court ruled in favour of the plaintiff who allegedly committed a violent murder. The author attempts to situate Azuma’s case in the context of the memory of the Nanjing Massacre in Japan, and to analyze the direct consequences of the sentence against the background of Sino-Japanese relations. The work also contains a description of the reception of Azuma's actions in the eyes of the Chinese and Japanese
