Nutritive value of forages and diets in some small-scale dairy farms in Kiambu County, Kenya in the short rains season

    No full text
Sixteen selected small-scale dairy farms were investigated in Kiambu County (Kenya) during the short rains season to develop a snapshot of the types of rations fed, milk yields obtained and sources of fodder. On average farmers had 1 ha of land and 2.2 lactating cows yielding 8.93 kg milk/cow/d with feed intake of 10.5 kg DM/d. Only 35% of feed consumed was produced on farm. Boma Rhodes grass hay and green Napier grass were the main forage components (37.9 and 28.3% of total DM). Protein forages used were the herbaceous legumes lucerne and desmodium (19.9 and 15.9% CP, respectively) and leguminous shrubs (Leucaena, Calliandra and Sesbania with 21.1% CP and 43.4% aNDFom, on average). Grasses had higher aNDFom digestibility (47.1%) than legumes (39.7%). Napier grass, Boma Rhodes grass, lucerne and desmodium had fiber digestibility of 51.9, 48.6, 46.8 and 32.6%, respectively. The energy and protein balances (actual vs. requirements) of the cows were on average-19.3 and-16.4%, respectively, indicating that cows utilized body tissues to produce the levels of milk obtained. Mutiple correspondence analysis showed that a milk yield higher than 9.1 kg/d was associated with a level of Boma Rhodes grass 5 kg DM/d, concentration of non fibrous carbohydrates in the diet 22.0% (DM basis), concentrate level >2.63 kg/cow/d and CP% in the ration >9.1%. To improve milk yields during this season farmers should harvest grass forage at a younger age, include leguminous forage in the diets and increase the level of concentrates fed. These strategies should be demonstrated on farms to show possible benefits

A Description of Figure of Speech in Selected Songs from Coldplay

In a paper entitled A Description of Figure of Speech in Selected Songs from Coldplay, the author wants to explain the figure of speech in Coldplay songs. Language style is very influential in a song because it expresses the feelings, thoughts or messages that the author wants to convey in his song to the listener. In this song there are several types of lectures that will be explained in this paper. This study shows how figurative language is related to the description of characterization in literature. To ensure that figurative language really helps describe further characterization. In this paper, there are all kinds of characters contained in Coldplay songs including Personification, Metaphor, Hyperbole, and Repetition contained in the Coldplay song entitled Fix You, The Scientist, Yellow, and Paradise.Dalam kertas karya yang berjudul A Description of Figure of Speech in Selected Songs from Coldplay, penulis ingin menjelaskan majas yang terdapat di dalam lagu-lagu Coldplay.

Efficient and asymptotically optimal kinodynamic motion planning

    No full text
This dissertation explores properties of motion planners that build tree data structures in a robot’s state space. Sampling-based tree planners are especially useful for planning for systems with significant dynamics, due to the inherent forward search that is per- formed. This is in contrast to roadmap planners that require a steering local planner in order to make a graph containing multiple possible paths. This dissertation explores a family of motion planners for systems with significant dynamics, where a steering local planner may be computationally expensive or may not exist. These planners focus on providing practical path quality guarantees without prohibitive computational costs. These planners can be considered successors of each other, in that each sub- sequent algorithm addresses some drawback of its predecessor. The first algorithm, Sparse-RRT, addresses a drawback of the RRT method by considering path quality during the tree construction process. Sparse-RRT is proven to be probabilistically complete under mild conditions for the first time here, albeit with a poor convergence rate. The second algorithm presented, SST, provides probabilistic completeness and asymptotic near-optimality properties that are provable, but at the cost of additional algorithmic overhead. SST is shown to improve the convergence rate compared to Sparse-RRT. The third algorithm, DIRT, incorporates learned lessons from these two algorithms and their shortcomings, incorporates task space heuristics to further improve runtime performance, and simplifies the parameters to more user-friendly ones. DIRT is also shown to be probabilistically complete and asymptotically near-optimal. Application areas explored using this family of algorithms include evaluation of distance functions for planning in belief space, manipulation in cluttered environments, and locomotion planning for an icosahedral tensegrity-based rover prototype that requires a physics engine to simulate its motions.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical reference

‘Dyvers kyndes of religion in sondry partes of the Ilande’: the geography of pastoral care in thirteenth-century England

    No full text
The Church was not the only progenitor and disseminator of ideas in medieval England, but it was the most pervasive. Relations between the ecclesiastical and lay realms are well documented at high social levels but become progressively obscure as one descends to the influence of the Church at large on society at large (and vice versa). The twelfth century was a time of great energy and renewal in the leadership and scholarship of the Church; comparable religious energy and renewal can be seen in late-medieval lay culture. The momentum was passed on in the thirteenth century, and pastoral care was the means of its transfer. The historical sources in this field tend to be either prescriptive, such as treatises on how to hear confessions, or descriptive, such as bishops’ registers. Prescription and description have generally been addressed separately. Likewise, the parish clergy and the friars are seldom studied together. These families of primary sources and secondary literature are brought together here to produce a more fully-rounded picture of pastoral care and church life. The Church was an inherently local institution, shaped by geography, personalities, social structures, and countless ad hoc solutions to local problems. Few studies of medieval English ecclesiastical history have fully accepted the considerable implications of this for pastoral care; close attention to local variation is a governing methodology of this thesis, which concludes with a series of local case studies of pastoral care in several dioceses, demonstrating not only the divergences between them but also the variations within them
