    Enriching Digital Libraries with Crowdsensed Data: Twitter Monitor and the SoBigData Ecosystem

    SoBigData is a Research Infrastructure (RI) aiming to provide an integrated ecosystem for ethic-sensitive scientific discoveries and advanced applications of social data mining. A key milestone of the project focuses on data, methods and results sharing, in order to ensure the reproducibility, review and re-use of scientific works. For this reason, the Digital Library paradigm is implemented within the RI, providing users with virtual environments where datasets, methods and results can be collected, maintained, managed and preserved, granting full documentation, access and the possibility to re-use. In this paper, we describe the results of our effort for integrating the Twitter Monitor, a tool for gathering messages from the Twitter Online Social Network, into the SoBigData RI. The Twitter Monitor provides a simple user interface, enabling researchers and stakeholders, without programming skills, to seamlessly (i) select relevant messages out of the huge Twitter stream by means of language, keyword, user tracking and geographical filters, (ii) store data on user personal Workspace, (iii) and publish them in the SoBigData Resource Catalogue, which implements all the aforementioned Digital Library features. Thanks to the seamless integration in the SoBigData RI, the Twitter Monitor allows researchers and stakeholders, belonging to different areas and having different backgrounds, to exploit the crowdsensing paradigm for enriching the SoBigData Digital Library. In this way, crowdsensing acquires the key features of openness, accessibility, interoperability and interdisciplinarity that characterize the Digital Libraries framework

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Extremist Propaganda Tweet Classification with Deep Learning in Realistic Scenarios

    In this work, we tackled the problem of the automatic classification of the extremist propaganda on Twitter, focusing on the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS). We built and published several datasets, obtained by mixing 15,684 ISIS propaganda tweets with a variable number of neutral tweets, related to ISIS, and random ones, accounting for imbalances up to 1%. We considered three state-of-the-art, deep learning techniques, representative of the main current approaches to text classification, and two strong linear machine learning baselines. We compared their performance when varying the composition of the training and test sets, in order to explore different training strategies, and to evaluate the results when approaching realistic conditions. We demonstrated that a Recurrent-Convolutional Neural Network, based on pre-trained word embeddings, can reach an excellent F1 score of 0.9 on the most challenging test condition (1%-imbalance)

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Charting the Landscape of Online Cryptocurrency Manipulation

    Cryptocurrencies represent one of the most attractive markets for financial speculation. As~a consequence, they have attracted unprecedented attention on social media. Besides genuine discussions and legitimate investment initiatives, several deceptive activities have flourished. In~this work, we~chart the online cryptocurrency landscape across multiple platforms. To~reach our goal, we~collected a large dataset, composed of more than 50M messages published by almost 7M users on Twitter, Telegram and Discord, over three months. We~performed bot detection on Twitter accounts sharing invite links to Telegram and Discord channels, and we discovered that more than 56% of them were bots~or~suspended accounts. Then, we~applied topic modeling techniques to Telegram and Discord messages, unveiling two different deception schemes -- ``pump-and-dump'' and ``Ponzi'' -- and identifying the channels involved in these frauds. Whereas on Discord we found a negligible level of deception, on~Telegram we retrieved 296~channels involved in pump-and-dump and 432~involved in Ponzi schemes, accounting for a striking 20% of the total. Moreover, we~observed that 93% of the invite links shared by Twitter bots point to Telegram pump-and-dump channels, shedding light on a little-known social bot activity.     We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
