No full textThis study explores the kind of information generally needed by media practitioners (MPs) in Karachi, Pakistan to perform the duties. 185 MPs from three types of media (TV, radio and newspaper) were surveyed. Reports of various organizations are the most used source of information. MPs need selective, rather than exhaustive, information on a daily basis. The findings of this study could help design library services and need-based collection development in media libraries

Data was collected for a time-series cross-sectional study exploring the impact of 10-valent Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV10) on nasopharyngeal (NP) carriage in children under 2 years of age from a rural population in Sindh, Pakistan. The study was carried out in two union councils of Matiari - Khyber and Shah Alam Shah Jee Wasi (Latitude 25.680298 / Longitude 68.502711). Data was collected on socio-demographics, clinical characteristics, and vaccination status using an android phone-based application. NP samples were collected using standard World Health Organisation (WHO) techniques, culture and serotyping were done using sequential Multiplex PCR described by the Centre for Disease Control, USA. We looked at the carriage rate of vaccine-type (VT) and non-vaccine type (NVT) serotypes over time in vaccinated and unvaccinated children. We additionally looked at the predictors for pneumococcal carriage. The study showed a high overall pneumococcal carriage in a large sample of 3140 children enrolled from a rural setting in Pakistan over a period of four years. Vaccine type carriage decreased both in the vaccinated and unvaccinated population indicating herd immunity
Towards Divine Economics: Some Testable Propositions
No full textThroughout the human history, the religion has remained a fundamental feature of social construct and human behaviour. Religious orientation plays important role in shaping human perceptions about economic and non-economic activities. With few exceptions, religion has remained an un-explored area in economics. For most economists, narrative and metaphor have no place in a rational choice theory, which is a wrong belief. In fact, any approach that considers behavioural laws satisfying the criteria of objectivity, reproducibility, and refutability is scientific and falls in purview of rational choice framework. A few studies, however, do exist on economics of religion under rational choice concerning to households, groups, and entire “religious markets”. [Becker (1976); Iannaccone (1988, 1990, 1992, 1993); Mack and Leigland (1992)]. Rosenberg (1985) presents discussion of the limitations of neoclassical economic theory due to its reliance on exogenous differences in taste and preference. It is argued that these limitations cannot be circumvented by findings and theories in other disciplines (e.g., psychology), because any measurement of preferences must begin with neoclassical assumptions about rationality. The alternative to tasteendogeniety advanced by [Becker (1976)] is found to only circumvent the usual difficulties if “stable preferences” notion is interpreted as needs. Further advancement is not taking place because of the important heterogeneous variables, which have yet received little attention from economists. Such variables may be found in attitudes and values acquired by consumers in variety of social and religious environments.

Hoffmann). Each Syriac word is defined in Arabic, often with more than one Arabic equivalent; in addition, the author deals not just with individual Syriac words, but in some cases with phrases. Gottheil used 21 manuscripts (from Oxford, London, Paris, Berlin, Leiden, and Rome) for this edition, and he has supplied a thorough critical apparatus; the manuscripts are described in the introduction. While some manuscripts give the Arabic glosses in Syriac characters (i.e. Garshuni), Gottheil has presented them here in Arabic script. These two volumes will be of great interest to Syriac lexicographers and those who study interactions between Syriac and Arabic.Contains an English introduction by Richard J.H. Gotthei

Cyclic response of infilled RC frames with window and door openings: Experimental results and damage interpretation
No full textThe paper presents the results of an experimental investigation assessing the influence of the openings typology and position on the cyclic response of masonry-infilled reinforced concrete frames. The experimental program consisted of seven 2/3 scale square frame specimens infilled with hollow clay bricks, which were subjected to quasi-static lateral cyclic tests up to large drifts. A reference bare frame was also tested for comparison. The specimens included solid infill walls, infills with door openings, and infills with window central and eccentric openings. The experimental responses of the specimens were analyzed in terms of strength, stiffness, energy dissipation capacity, and equivalent damping, and were compared to those of the reference bare frame and fully infilled frame. Results revealed a significant modification of the resisting mechanisms as a function of the typology and position of the openings with respect to the case of a fully infilled frame, although the lateral resisting capacity was not substantially modified. On the other hand, it was observed that the achievement of the limit state thresholds occurred at substantially different interstorey drifts, indicating different damage metrics. Simple regression analyses, based on the experimental results of this study and from the literature, were finally conducted to interpret the modification of the peak force and of the corresponding drift as a function of synthetic parameters defining the opening arrangement
