Heat ageing and thermal stability of a silicone rubber (SR) filled with montmorillonite clay (MMT) was investigated. Three types of rubber nanocomposites were prepared with hig hly exfoliated Cloisite 30B (SR/C30B), intercalated/exfoliated Cloisite Na 1 (SR/Na 1 MMT), and highly intercalated Cloisite 20A (SR/C20A). This study showed that the SR/C30B nanocomposite exhibited excellent heat resistance in comparison to the other two nanocomposites and neat SR as revealed by higher retention strength. The thermal stability of the rubber in air was strongly dependent on the clay morphology and increased in the following order: highly intercalated/exfoliated SR/Na 1 MMT < highly intercalated SR/C20A < highly exfoliated SR/C30B. The thermogravimetric analyses of the SR/C30B nanocomposite showed a substantial increase in the final residue in comparison with the neat SR. This indicated a major improvement in the thermal stability of the rubber containing the exfoliated clay, which was also supported by the higher activation energy of decomposition measured for the nanocomposite

EKOPRENATM AS A REINFORCEMENT MODIFIER FOR GRAPHENE OXIDE/CARBON BLACK FILLED NATURAL RUBBER

Graphene oxide (GO) has emerged as a new layered carbon nanomaterial due to its outstanding strength. However, to disperse GO sheets into a nonpolar rubber matrix such as natural rubber is a challenge. In this study, EkoprenaTM or epoxidised natural rubber (ENR) was used as a reinforcement modifier for hybrid filler graphene oxide/carbon black (GO/CB) filled natural rubber (NR). Three grades of ENR containing different levels of epoxide functional group (eg. 50%, 60% and 75%) were used to investigate the effect of polar functionality on the reinforcing efficiency of graphene oxide in natural rubber. The study has shown that the incorporation of ENR was found to reduce filler-filler interaction and to improve technological properties. The epoxide functionality on natural rubber opens the possibility of interaction with graphene oxide as indicated by the significant changes in the Tg. The best levels of reinforcement were found with the addition of ENR-60 as reinforcement modifier. Keywords: EkoprenaTM; epoxidised natural rubber; graphene oxide; natural rubber nanocomposite; reinforcement modifier

In the title compound, [Cd(C9H10NS2)2(C10H8N2)]·CHCl3, the CdII atom exists in an all-cis distorted octahedral geometry. Chelation is isobidentate for one dithiocarbamate ligand and anisobidentate for the other. The chloroform solvent molecule is disordered over two positions of equal occupancy

Urine Untargeted Metabolomic Profiling Is Associated with the Dietary Pattern of Successful Aging among Malaysian Elderly

Food intake biomarkers (FIBs) can reflect the intake of specific foods or dietary patterns (DP). DP for successful aging (SA) has been widely studied. However, the relationship between SA and DP characterized by FIBs still needs further exploration as the candidate markers are scarce. Thus, 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR)-based urine metabolomics profiling was conducted to identify potential metabolites which can act as specific markers representing DP for SA. Urine sample of nine subjects from each three aging groups, SA, usual aging (UA), and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), were analyzed using the 1H-NMR metabolomic approach. Principal components analysis (PCA) and partial least-squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) were applied. The association between SA urinary metabolites and its DP was assessed using the Pearson’s correlation analysis. The urine of SA subjects was characterized by the greater excretion of citrate, taurine, hypotaurine, serotonin, and melatonin as compared to UA and MCI. These urinary metabolites were associated with alteration in “taurine and hypotaurine metabolism” and “tryptophan metabolism” in SA elderly. Urinary serotonin (r = 0.48, p < 0.05) and melatonin (r = 0.47, p < 0.05) were associated with oat intake. These findings demonstrate that a metabolomic approach may be useful for correlating DP with SA urinary metabolites and for further understanding of SA development

Implementation of functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes on magnetorheological elastomer

This work studies the effects of loading various functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (carboxyl, –COOH-MWCNTs) on the morphological and the field-dependent rheological properties of magnetorheological elastomers (MREs). A new type of MRE, which is reinforced by various loading from 0 to 1.5 wt% of COOH-MWCNT, is fabricated and experimentally investigated. The morphology of COOH-MWCNT and MRE with COOH-MWCNTs is characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The results indicate that the COOH-MWCNTs are well embedded and dispersed randomly in the MRE structures. The rheological properties under different magnetic fields are evaluated using parallel plate rheometers. The influence of COOH-MWCNT content on the viscoelastic performance of the MRE is systematically investigated. It is found that when a higher content of COOH-MWCNT (up to 1.0 wt%) is added in the MRE, the MRE exhibits a higher MR effect of up to 17.5%. It is also shown that COOH-MWCNT acts as a reinforcing agent that leads to an enhancement in MR performance
