“Constructio and related terms in Medieval grammars: toward a theory of syntax

    No full text
Between the eleventh and the twelfth century, a consistent termi- nology develops to denote certain syntactical relations between words, like “dependency”. This concerns the relation between the predicate and its arguments as well as the prepositions and their nouns, or, in a noun phrase or finally in a verbal phrase, between subject and predi- cate. The elaboration of a set of terms coming from the Late Latin tradi- tion and an innovated conception of the role of grammars culminates in the syntactic theory of the Modistae. As Covington (1984: 42) and later Kneepkens (1990: 140 and passim) have already claimed, at the center of the metalinguistic reflection lies the term constructio with its history and network of related terms. I devote this part of my research to my esteemed friend Lucio, who shares with our research group1 the troubles of the intriguing history of the beginning of (modern) syntac- tic thought in the Middle Ages and its intertwinements with rhetoric

Rappresentazione categoriale ed esponenza: il caso delle definizioni sintagmatiche della categoria di genere

The representation of gender raises interesting problems that concern the multiple manifestations of the category at the semantic, morphological and syntactic level. The main focus of this paper is a criticism of the definition of gender in terms of agreement. It is argued that agreement is only an exponent of the category and as such it pertains to the empirical and descriptive level of representation. The category of gender in itself requires a more abstract representation. It primarily concerns paradigmatic morpho-semantic properties, whose relationship to the various manifestation properties of exponence is not easy to be determined. These problems are also debated by reconsidering some of the prominent perspectives on gender in the history of linguistics

Sulla codifica degli eventi di moto in greco omerico: il ruolo dell'aspetto lessicale

This paper aims at investigating the encoding strategy of motion events in Homeric Greek. Based on Talmy’s theoretical framework (1985; 2000; 2007; 2009), this study focuses on a rather neglected topic on motion events description, i.e. the role of verbal inherent lexical aspect (Aktionsart). The analysis takes into account the occurrences of the verbs for run in the Iliad and the Odyssey. In particular, the verbs θέω, τρέχω, ἔδραμον show a non-random distribution with the co-occurring spatial particles as PATH-satellites. Textual data suggest that the [±telic] aspectual feature plays a fundamental role for both the entailment of the arrival of the FIGURE (the moving object) to the GROUND (the reference object), and the level of morphosyntactic cohesion between motion verbs and spatial particles, according to different degrees of grammaticalization

Una nuova interpretazione del fr. F28 Garcea del De analogia cesariano

The present paper deals with a Julius Caesar’s passage quoted by the late Roman grammarian Charisius (4th century CE) in his Ars fr. F28 Garcea (Barwick 1997: 141, 25-142, 7 = 1, 110, 23-111, 6 Keil). The fragment is excerpted from Caesar’s treatise De analogia, and concerns the morphology of Nom. Sing. idem vs Nom. Plur. isdem (these are the forms reported in Charisius’ manuscripts). Unfortu- nately, the text transmitted by the Neapolitan manuscript Biblioteca Nazionale ‘Vittorio Emanuele III’ IV A 8 (8th century) is badly cor- rupted. Thanks to a close intertextual inspection of several gramma- tical sources, a new interpretation of this difficult passage is offered, together with a new reading of the manuscript. Caesar seemingly recommended the forms isdem as Nom. Sing. and iidem as Nom. Plur. Caesar’s viewpoint on the pronominal pair idem/isdem is also supported by a paragraph in Cicero’s Orator; here Cicero harshly criticizes Caesar’s position in the De analogia on Nom. Sing. isdem, together with other linguistic proposals

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
