    Effect of substructure stiffness on the performance of integral abutment bridges under thermal loads

    This research investigates the effect of substructure stiffness on the performance of short and medium span length Integral Abutment Bridges (IABs) subjected to thermal load. Various parameters such as foundation soil stiffness, pile orientation, pile type, and abutment geometry on the performance of IABs, are considered. Three-dimensional (3D) Finite Element (FE) models were developed using the FE software LUSAS to capture the behavior of IABs including the variations in displacement and rotation in the transverse direction for the various components of the superstructure as well as the substructure. Field measurements from a recently constructed two-span steel girder IAB were utilized to validate the 3D FE models. Using the validated model, a parametric study was carried out to study the effect of the above parameters on the performance of IABs under thermal loading using AASHTO-LRFD temperature ranges. The study shows that among the investigated parameters, the foundation soil stiffness stands as the most important factor that affects the performance of IABs. In general, the bridge behavior is more sensitive to the foundation soil stiffness during bridge contraction. The results from the study show considerable variations in displacement and rotation in the transverse direction for the various components of the superstructure and the substructure in relatively wide IABs. This research suggests that Prestressed Concrete Piles can be a viable alternative to steel H-Piles for short span bridges. It was also noticed that the stress level due to thermal loading in the various components of the bridge can be significantly reduced by enclosing the top part of the pile in an enclosure filled with crushed stone or loose sand. Moreover, the research suggests that the pile orientation has a minimum effect on the behavior of IABs. It also suggests that a slight increase in the abutment height can significantly reduce the displacement and rotation along the piles during bridge expansion. The research also suggests that 3D models are necessary to capture the behavior of IABs especially during bridge expansion. The research provides simple equations and charts to help bridge engineers calculate the displacement and rotation along the substructure.Ph.     Abstract Minerals and trace elements are thought to be necessary for human nutrition, and seaweeds are well known for their accumulation capacity and the rate may vary based on the locations. Green seaweeds are recognized for their iron and magnesium content, whilst brown and red seaweeds prefer to accumulate manganese, iodine, sodium, potassium, and zinc. These properties provide significant opportunities for the functional food development industry to create new ingredients and generate employment. Additionally, certain seaweeds are considered as potential candidates for addressing the iodine deficiency through regular consumption, thus seaweeds hold great potential as functional foods. This review examines the role of minerals in seaweed farming followed by their impact on seaweed growth and nutritional value, the health benefits of mineral-enriched seaweed, and its market potential as a functional food. It also discusses about the limitations, challenges, pathways for popularization, and future opportunities for seaweed as a functional food.     Prevalence of Eating Disorders among Female College Students of Northern Broader University, Arar, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

    Objective: The study aimed at examining the prevalence and correlates of eating disorder among female college students of Northern Broader University, Arar city, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Methods: A cross sectional survey was conducted among female college students. The total sample size was 160 (66.66% of total population of college) and stratified random sampling technique was used to select female students age ranged between 18 and 23 years from faculty of medical and faculty of applied medical science. Subjects were ask to fill pre tested questionnaire about socioeconomic status, age at menarche, body image and Eating attitude test 26 (EAT 26), there height and weight were measured and BMI was calculated. Results: Out of 160 female college students only 120 (75%) returned completely filled questionnaires and they were considered for statistical analysis. It was found that, 32 (26.66%) of study population scored 20 or above, which is the cutoff point of EAT-26, indicating negative eating attitudes. There was significant difference found in prevalence of disordered eating attitudes in different BMI ranges. However, the association between student’s age at menarche and abnormal eating attitude was not statistically significant. Conclusion: The findings support our hypothesis of a relatively high rate of abnormal eating attitudes (as reflected by high EAT-26 score) in this population. The results have important implication for increasing awareness about an emerging clinical problem.     Response-Time Analysis for Non-Preemptive Global Scheduling with Spin Locks

    With the proliferation of multicore platforms, the embedded systems world has shifted more and more towards multiprocessing to make use of high computing power and increased cyber functionalities. Although today multiprocessor platforms have been extensively adopted by real-time embedded systems, there exists a need for tools and techniques that can accurately assess the temporal correctness of a system. In terms of multiprocessor systems, this is coupled with fundamental challenges, since these systems, as we find them today, make use of complex hardware components, resource sharing and memory architectures, which negatively affect the timing predictability of such systems. Spin-based locking protocols, which are used to ensure mutual exclusion when sharing resources in a system, and a non-preemptive execution model have been found to help mitigate the adverse effect on the timing predictability, since they allow for less interruptions, which results in reduced cache evictions and a better estimate of worst-case execution times. While this improves the overall timing predictability of such systems, to date, there exists no response-time analysis that can analyze multiprocessor systems that globally execute non-preemptive tasks sharing resources protected by spin locks. Motivated by the lack of analysis tools for systems that consider non-preemptive global scheduling and the access to shared resources, this work provides the first analysis for global job-level fixed-priority (JLFP) scheduling policies and FIFO- or priority-ordered spin locks. To do so, it extends the family of schedule-abstraction-based analysis to model the access to shared resources in a highly accurate manner. The proposed analysis computes response-time bounds for a set of resource-sharing jobs subject to release jitter and execution-time uncertainties by implicitly exploring all possible execution scenarios using state-abstraction and state-pruning techniques. A large-scale empirical evaluation of the proposed analysis shows it to be substantially less pessimistic than simple execution-time inflation methods (i.e., a straightforward extension of existing response-time analysis tools for non-preemptive tasks that do not share resources), thanks to the explicit modeling of contention for shared resources and a scenario-aware blocking analysis.Electrical Engineering | Embedded System

    Resource exploitation in the form of land-grabbing has become a major debate worldwide. Based on extensive field research conducted at the India-Pakistan border, using Kishanganga Hydroelectric Project as a case study, this book on corporate land-grabbing in Kashmir explains how capital is at play in a conflict zone. The author explains how different actors—village elites, government officers, politicians, civil society coalitions, peasants, and the states of India and Pakistan—mobilize support to legitimize their respective claims. It captures how the tensions between developmentalism, environmentalism, and national interest on one hand, and universal rights, national sovereignty, subnational identity, and resistance on the other—facilitate and challenge these corporate resource-grabs simultaneously. The author argues that the patterns and scale of land- and resource-grabbing has led to depeasantization, dispossession, displacement, loss of livelihoods, forced commoditization of the local peasantry, and damages to the local ecology at large. The book thus combines the literature in violence and development and dispossession studies by addressing the socio-political conflict in land- and resource-grabbing in conflict zones.</p
