Vizita lui Nicolae Ceaușescu la Gherla în 1983 / The Visit of Nicolae Ceaușescu at Gherla in 1983

    No full text
This study analyses the way a visit of such a personality like Nicolae Ceauşescu, was perceived by the people of Gherla, a province city. Beyond the actual events, through the medium of interviews (teachers who were mobilized alongside their students) and oral history testimonials (the director of The Plant of Wood Processing-Combinatul de Prelucrare a Lemnului), we propose to highlight which were the people’s feelings, how they perceived the presence of the head of state in their community and which were the effects. In this work we’ll try to track the way a visit of an important personality, during the communist period, could generate feelings like passion, carelessness, curiosity etc. Through In Search for the Perfect Romanian. National Specificity, Racial Degeneration and Social Selection in Modern Romania [În căutarea românului perfect. Specific național, degenerare rasială și selecție socială în România modernă], Marius Turda proposes a new method to understand and explain the foundations of Romanian nationalism between 1880 and 1950. Structured in six chapters, the book shows that in Romania there was a eugenic and biopolitical culture that was to define Romanian nationalism and scientific racism. Its extreme forms materialized in the measures taken against Jews and Roma during the Holocaust in Romania. I review the book from the perspective of social memory. By questioning some present-day commemorative practices I highlight the present legacies of eugenics: schools named after strategists of racism, such as Sabin Manuilă; public commemorations of anti-Semites such as Liviu Stan or Nicolae Paulescu

An Idea: The Society of Nations (Origin, Organisation, Aims)

    No full text
The beginning of the 20th century found the states preoccupied to found an international organisation whose main aim should have been the keeping of general peace. This organisation was the Society of Nations. The Pact of the Society of Nations started to be applied beginning with the 20th of January 1920, having as its founding members 26 states, 4 dominions and India as countries who fought against Germany. The main leading institutions of the Society of Nations were: the Assembly and Council assisted by a permanent Secretariat. Besides the Society of Nations two other bodies have worked as separate institutions but closely linked to it: the International Labour Organisation and the Permanent Court of International Justice. The Chinese-Japanese conflict, fascist Italy’s attack against Ethiopia,, the reoccupation of the Rhineland by Germany, the Russian-Finnish war were crises in which the Society of Nations proved helpless. The defining element was the fact that the Society of Nations was lacking a military force by which it could solve the political crises and apply military sanctions to the aggressive states which, by their deeds, challenged the universal peace, the supreme aim for which the Society of Nations had been founded.international organizations, The Society of Nations, Woodrow Wilson

Marius von Mayenburg and Roland Schimmelpfennig

Roland Schimmelpfennig and Marius von Mayenburg represent a new generation of playwrights to emerge in the German-speaking countries in the late 1990s; other prominent protagonists include Falk Richter, Lukas Bärfuss and Kathrin Röggla, as well as Dea Loher and Sibylle Berg. In this chapter, the author clearly shares some of their approaches, as both revisit and reinvent key conventional dramatic mechanisms, yet from a postdramatic horizon. Fireface, mapped out key themes as well as the (European middle-class) universe that keeps appearing in Mayenburg’s work in a variety of permutations. In Der Hässliche, premiered at Schaubühne Berlin in January 2007, Marius von Mayenburg plays a scathing game with postmodern ideas of the ‘performativity’ of subjectivity and contingency of identity. These academic ideas, in the context of neoliberal capitalism, contribute to an all-encompassing commodification of individuality. In fact, all of Marius von Mayenburg’s plays transcend the hyper-realities of his scenarios into grotesque exposures of absurdities of middle-class life under global capitalism

LAUNCHING EFFORTS NEEDED FOR A HIGH-TECH PRODUCT

    No full text
This paper aims the difficult problem of creating new product concepts in the area of high-technology and innovation. Because of scientific discoveries and impressive development of technology, many companies compete for market supremacy on the technological innovations market. In a global market, which is currently in an economic and financial crisis, consumers make a new hierarchy of priorities in terms of expenditure and consumption. Therefore, companies that create new products must be very careful about 2 aspects, so the new product may not become a failure: the products positioning on the market and the target group which they address to. This paper belongs to the marketing area by bringing into discussion theoretical concepts, by analyzing the stages crossed by a company in the process of launching a new high-tech product and crossing the abyss in the product adoption process by consumers.high-tech product, product adoption process, launching process, product lifecycle, innovators, PC tablet

Estimation of alternative splicing isoform frequencies from RNA-Seq data

Abstract Background Massively parallel whole transcriptome sequencing, commonly referred as RNA-Seq, is quickly becoming the technology of choice for gene expression profiling. However, due to the short read length delivered by current sequencing technologies, estimation of expression levels for alternative splicing gene isoforms remains challenging. Results In this paper we present a novel expectation-maximization algorithm for inference of isoform- and gene-specific expression levels from RNA-Seq data. Our algorithm, referred to as IsoEM, is based on disambiguating information provided by the distribution of insert sizes generated during sequencing library preparation, and takes advantage of base quality scores, strand and read pairing information when available. The open source Java implementation of IsoEM is freely available at http://dna.engr.uconn.edu/software/IsoEM/. Conclusions Empirical experiments on both synthetic and real RNA-Seq datasets show that IsoEM has scalable running time and outperforms existing methods of isoform and gene expression level estimation. Simulation experiments confirm previous findings that, for a fixed sequencing cost, using reads longer than 25-36 bases does not necessarily lead to better accuracy for estimating expression levels of annotated isoforms and genes.</p

CHANGE – “THE ENGINE” OF EXISTENCE. CASE STUDY:ROMANIA AND ITS CONTINUOUS CHANGE PROCESS

    No full text
Should there be no change, no technical and economic progress would exist, either, not to mention that humanity would not be able to evolve; that is to say: humanity would not exist, as a matter of fact. The XXI-th century has been confronted with a series of changes, be them of an economic, political, social, cultural, technological nature, or of any other nature, that “give birth” to diverse phenomena and processes that, along the run, shall trigger the modification of economy, society, organization, management and of the human resource – the new worldwide tendencies. It is only based on being aware of the theoretical notions that refer to the change process, and, also based on being accustomed to the concrete elements from the economic, political and social reality, that we shall be able to apply the management of change, and this would result in benefits and advantages both at the macro-economic level, and at the micro-economic one, as well. From this point of view, Romania that is currently crssing an economic crisis, crisis to be actually a worldwide phenomenon, comes as a very good example. Not too much talk shall be made either with reference to the causes that resulted in the appearance of this global economic crisis, or with reference to the consequences of this one on our country since the subject of the present paper focuses on the managerial change. In other words, our interest goes to the way in which this crisis affects the organizations (the trading companies) from Romania.change, change process, change management, economic crisis
