Creating Program Culture Through Competition: How Multi-Disciplinary Design Teams Will Help to Birth a New Program
This paper will describe a new program in the Herron School of Art + Design on the Indiana University Indianapolis Campus as it ventures into developing an Interior Design Program with an emphasis on Energy Efficient and Evidence Based Design. With an internationally recognized rich history of People Centered Design practices, the department has proven to be a trailblazer, and now we will be building upon that with the integration of globally recognized design competitions as the basis for our program development & growth. Leaning on the experience of a faculty member new to the department, but not new to design competitions, this multi-disciplinary team & competition approach will serve as the introduction of AEI curriculum (architecture, engineering, & interior design) to the student body. In addition to the implementation of AEI, we will include expertise of People Centered Design, the cornerstone of the department, and introduce students to interior environments designed be to be both aesthetically pleasing and maximizes its energy efficiency and universal designed user-friendliness. Our new plan of study will give students a real-world experience of give and take amongst peers, project management, and design development. Incorporating the Building Information Modeling (BIM) approach, students will have developed the dynamic presentation imagery and needed construction documents to sell the concept. The assessment will allow us to utilize the data to help with the future course development, program growth, and long-term planning of the degree program. This will be a multi-year project, and this paper will focus on step one which is curriculum building, team development and the multi-disciplinary approach.
The Multidisciplinary Design approach has proven to be both challenging and rewarding in both industry and academia. Bringing together bright minds to attack a design problem functionally and systematically can evaluate the boundaries of all team members. “For some professionally, vocationally, or technically oriented careers, curricula delivered in higher education establishments may focus on teaching material related to a single discipline. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Three Stage Feasibility Study in Healthy Design
It is not uncommon for students in our interior design and & architectural technology program to be exposed to service learning projects, as our campus is one of the nations leaders in such project types. It is however uncommon for the design students to be placed on projects that ask them to step outside their comfort zone in terms of social economic interaction with community residents/partners. Asking them to set aside their personal biases to apply their design skills to a project that would create a usable space for those that are afflicted with Sickle Cell, as well as a working environment for those that provide much needed social services to them. This three part study saw our students study three options:
• Renovation that would connect the two adjacent facilities currently being used by the agency. • Designing proposals for a new structure one block south of the current facility • Renovation of the larger of the two current facilities being used by the agency, and creating a new outdoor space for the users.
This project challenged the students in so many ways, but the most drastic of those challenges was understanding a disease that is not recognizable to the mainstream population. According to the most current data from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Sickle Cell affects about 1 out of every 500 Black/African Americans births and 1 out of every 36,000 Hispanic American births.
The first two feasibility studies while dramatically increasing the useable square footage potentially pushed the agency beyond their capital campaign capabilities. This third and final included the client vacating one structure on their site and converting it into a rental property, and dramatically renovating the remaining building to increase efficiency of the work staff, and incorporate such design strategies as indoor air quality, more efficient use of artificial and natural light, and high quality heating and cooling. These design strategies are proven to have positive impacts on those suffering from sickle cell disease
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
