University Hall
The oldest building on Purdue's West Lafayette campus-University Hall - donned a new steel-skeleton spire Saturday (8/19). The old spire, damaged in a December 1998 windstorm that swept through the campus, was removed this summer to make room for the replacement. Construction on the spire and repairs to the roof should be completed in November. The spired building, completed in 1877, overlooks Memorial Mall and the gravesite of founding benefactor John Purdue. A silhouette of the spire is featured prominently in the logo of the Purdue Alumni Association. (Purdue News Service Photo by Nick Judy

Water, energy and food security: integrated technology solutions for sustainability
Water, Energy and Food Security for all are the primary aspirations of the global community. It is also singularly the most important and challenging "Global Strategic Problem" the global community faces today, for water, energy and food are inseparably linked and global concerns about limited access to these three fundamentals for life are compounded by growing concerns about their future availability and sustainability. To effectively deal with this Global Strategic Problem - and realize long-term water, energy, and food security - we need to acknowledge and better understand its key drivers and issues. For example, water, energy and food are not only inseparably linked, but they also underpin the development and expansionary nature of current global trade and productivity models. That we have physically and environmentally limited resources at our disposal presents an enormous challenge to find niche and technological innovations if we are to achieve desired levels of economic prosperity. This paper seeks to demonstrate how the power of thought-leadership in integrating technologies to provide sustainable solutions underpins our ability to effectively address the Global Strategic Problem. It is argued that the development and application of integrated technology solutions is critical if the global community is to achieve any sustainable level of water, energy and food security. Several examples of innovative solutions using both current and emerging technologies are presented across the three sectors, and their interdependencies discussed from a water, energy and food security nexus perspective
Multimedia Support and Authoring in Microcosm: an extended model
This paper discusses the issues involved in putting the media into a hypermedia system. The main argument of the paper is that to-date media representation and underlying link strategies have been too closely tied together in the move from hypertext to hypermedia. We argue that it is necessary to separate the issues of media from link structure, and we present a model which solves some of the problems of genuine media integration in a hypermedia system. At the same time the model provides support for the creation of links between data of different media types in a conceptually meaningful way. The paper describes the design of Microcosm++, an object oriented extensible service-based architecture for building consistent integrated hypermedia systems. It is based on the Microcosm hypermedia system which was developed at Southampton. The current implementation of Microcosm++ demonstrates the flexibility of object-based services for making hypermedia more viable in a working environment. The approach described reduces authoring effort significantly while at the same time increasing the integrity of the link structures and providing a unified model for media integration
