Blurring the boundaries between networking and IT security
Networking and security used to be largely separate IT methodologies. They were even built separately. Traditionally, networks were constructed on standard building blocks (switches, routers etc) and security solutions such as perimeter firewalls, intrusion prevention systems and the like were applied afterwards. Networking and security used to be largely separate IT methodologies. As such, they could be treated as separate domains of the business. That's not the case today. There is now a huge overlap between the two areas. It is becoming common to think about the network itself as a security enforcement platform and these two elements of modern technology systems are becoming inextricably entwined. This development will be overwhelmingly positive both for solutions providers and their end customers, says Dave Nicholson of Axial Systems. </jats:p
Cloud first – tackling the security challenges
Organisations of all shapes and sizes and in every sector of our economy are increasingly drawn to the idea of moving their data and applications to the cloud. When one looks at the huge array of practical benefits that can be achieved by doing so, this growing interest and escalating uptake is hardly surprising. After all, by migrating their resources to the cloud, organisations can achieve enhanced scalability, a significant reduction in operating costs, greater collaboration and document control and provide ubiquitous access to their applications. Organisations are increasingly drawn to the benefits of the cloud. And we are seeing many of them adopting a ‘cloud first’ strategy. This does not mean, however, that organisations no longer have security issues to confront or data management concerns to address. This new cloud-focused IT landscape brings with it threats from both external and internal sources, adding to the pressure placed on the organisation's security and networking teams, explains Dave Nicholson of Axial Systems. </jats:p

From Pedrolino to a Pierrot: The Origin, Ancestry and Ambivalence of the British Pierrot Troupe
In this article, the author considers the British development of the seaside Pierrot troupe, arguing that its construction is consistent with the notion of invented tradition, and the associated concerns with identity and nationality. Tracing the history of the character from its origins as Pedrolino in the commedia dell’arte, the article considers the traditional and novel elements of the British form. This also allows a brief account of the origin and aesthetics of the British tradition. Reflecting on the synthesis of the archaic and contemporary dimensions of the form, the author proposes that the new structure constructed an ambivalent class of character. The composition of both troupes and audiences was drawn from across the range of social strata. Through its collectivity and its treatment of contemporary social themes, it is argued the British Pierrot troupe approached and negotiated questions of a cultural and national identity in the late-Victorian period.
Dave Calvert is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Huddersfield, UK. His research
interests include street theatre, Applied Theatre and learning disabled
performance. He is also a member of The Pierrotters, the last remaining seaside

Debbie Harmon Ferry and Professor Dave Hansen Interview
Professor Dave Hansen and Debbie Harmon Ferry are a father/daughter duo who collectively have spent 70 years (at the date of the interview) working at Linfield College. Hansen began his time at Linfield as an Economics professor, became Dean of Students, and is now a Professor Emeritus. Ferry has been at Linfield\u27s McMinnville campus since the age of one and grew up on campus. After spending some time away, Ferry returned to Linfield knowing it was the right place for her for school and, later, for her career. Ferry began as an Admissions counselor and is currently the Director of Alumni Relations.
This interview takes place in the Jereld R. Nicholson Library\u27s Austin Reading Room. Topics covered include the family dynamic of having your father/daughter work at Linfield, how the culture on campus has changed, (especially technological improvements), what the unique relationship is like between McMinnville and Linfield, and a larger perspective on how Linfield and higher education are viewed today.
