Envisioning Geometry: Architecture in the Grip of Perspective
No full textThis book chapter examines the early developments of perspective in 15th century Florence, arguing that the conception of pictorial space in the Early Renaissance both drew upon late Medieval notions of luminary space and anticipated the 'geometrisation' of space in Modernity. The paper demonstrates this intermediate position (at once reflective and anticipatory) through an examination of the ideas of Nicolas Cusanus, Filippo Brunelleschi, Lorenzo Ghiberti and Leon Battista Alberti, all of whom presented different 'models' of perspective in the light of their own artistic predilections and architectural interests. A shared view however of the role and significance of perspective at this time concerns its capacity to redefine pictorially the civic and religious dimensions of the actual city. This is demonstrated in both Brunelleschi's perspective 'experiments' and Ghiberti's composition and spatial articulation of the 'Gates of Paradise' for Florence Baptistery. In the final section of the paper, I examine a photograph by Le Corbusier in which I demonstrate how his visual recording of his studio (articulated in a drawing by Peter Carl) applies similar methods of luminary and geometric relationships found in Renaissance pictorial space
Higher doses of quetiapine prescribed in delirious ECMO supported patients. Can circuit sequestration have a role?
No full textDelirium is the most common neuropsychiatric condition in critical care. It can affect up to 80%of mechanically ventilatedpatients. Antipsychotics (APs) are the most frequently prescribed medication for the management of delirium symptoms in criticalcare.We have conducted an extensive retrospective review that was focused on antipsychotics prescribing patterns for managementdelirium over 4 months period. In the review, 6 patients receiving ECMO VV (venovenous) support, were prescribed quetiapinefor delirium management.ECMO supported patients often have a greater severity of illness, multiple comorbidities, and require a greater depth of sedation(especially in the short term). This can increase both delirium development and severity(1) which can ultimately result inprescribing higher APs doses to achieve the desired effect. Although, an additional explanation for higher doses is that quetiapinecould have been sequestrated by the ECMO circuit.ECMO circuits drug sequestration is a well prescribed phenomenon. Ex-vivo studies (2) have concluded that concentration ofhighly protein bound and/ or lipophilic drugs (quetiapine is both) may be lower in ECMO supported patients. This could potentiallylead to pseudo resistance which can be overcome by prescribing higher doses
Poincaré duality and Langlands duality for extended affine Weyl groups

No full textThis study reveals Greene in a dual role as author, one who projects literary experience into his view of life and subsequently projects both his experience and its "literary" interpretation into his fiction; and it defines two phases of Greenes novels through the changing relationship between writer and protagonists. The DSM diagnostic criteria for Female Sexual Arousal Disorder
No full textThis article reviews and critiques the DSM-IV-TR diagnostic criteria for Female Sexual Arousal Disorder (FSAD). An overview of how the diagnostic criteria for FSAD have evolved over previous editions of the DSM is presented and research on prevalence and etiology of FSAD is briefly reviewed. Problems with the essential feature of the DSM-IV-TR diagnosis — “an inability to attain, or to maintain…an adequate lubrication-swelling response of sexual excitement” — are identified. The significant overlap between “arousal” and “desire” disorders is highlighted. Finally, specific recommendations for revision of the criteria for DSM-V are made, including use of a polythetic approach to the diagnosis and the addition of duration and severity criteria
