Evaluating the effectiveness of oral presentations towards students' English speaking ability at Nguyen Tat Thanh University
Get PDF8 p.The purpose of this research is to evaluate the effectiveness of oral presentations to improve the ability to speak English of first-year non-English major students at Nguyen Tat Thanh University. A quasi-experimental design is conducted with two groups, including an experimental group that receives instruction utilizing an oral presentation approach and a control group that receives no intervention. Pre-test and post-test assessments are used to systematically evaluate the impact of oral presentations on students' English speaking ability in terms of grammar, pronunciation, lexical proficiency, fluency, and discourse coherency. Racial Equality and the Law: Creating an Effective Statute and Enforcement Model for Hong Kong
Get PDFThe Hong Kong government has commenced a public consultation exercise on a bill to prohibit racial discrimination, which is expected to be introduced in the Legislative Council in early 2005. The government has proposed to model the bill on the existing Sex Discrimination Ordinance (SDO) and the Disability Discrimination Ordinance (DDO). While there are advantages to adopting a familiar format, the author argues that the SDO and DDO can be improved upon, in particular, that a more flexible definition of indirect discrimination should be adopted and that special provisions be drafted to address discrimination against new immigrants from mainland China. The author takes the view that this is an opportune time to strengthen the enforcement model for all of Hong Kong's anti-discrimination laws. The author proposes that officers at the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) be empowered to take a more proactive approach and that a specialist equal opportunities tribunal should be established outside the auspices of the EOC.published_or_final_versio

No full textAn oral history with Mr. Nguyen Ly, born in 1970 in Saigon, Vietnam. He grew up ethnic Chinese as a son of a tailor and his wife. He was the second son of four children. Growing up, he took drawing classes, and his siblings did other artistic activities as well. He lived in Saigon until he and his family escaped via boat to Malaysia in 1978. He and his family stayed in the camp until an uncle and a church sponsored them. In 1979, he and his family moved to the San Gabriel Valley in Southern California. There they stayed until Nguyen graduated high school and went to Cal Poly Pomona where he earned his degree in graphic design. In 1992, Nguyen received his U.S. citizenship and changed his name to Charles. After graduating with his degree from Cal Poly Pomona, Nguyen went to Rome, Italy to paint a fresco with about 40 other artists. Following that he worked at his family’s restaurant. Nguyen entered the master’s program at Cal State Fullerton in printmaking in 1998. There, he started his job at the local library, which he still has to this day. In 2011, he joined the printmaking collective, Los de Abajo and continually competes and creates art with the collective. He is married with no children and currently resides in Whittier, CA.Recorded Digitall

Kim-Binh T. Trinh. Diagnosis Body cylindrical, medium size, length 82–91 mm, diameter 3.2–3.7 mm, 103–150 segments. Prostomium prolobous. First dorsal pore in 12/13. Setal number 31–39 in viii, 42–53 in xxx, 5–7 between male porophores in xviii; setal distance aa> ab, zz> zy. Spermathecal pores multiple, in ventrolateral intersegments 4/5/6/7. Male pores located inside copulatory pouches in xviii. No genital markings in the spermathecal region, but two pairs in xvii and xix. Testis sacs separated. Holandric. Intestinal caeca absent. Septa 8/9/10 absent. Habitats The species was found in soils in which long-term trees are planted. Remarks The species was recently described from Hon Dat Mountain in the mainland of Kien Giang Province. No full textAn oral history with Mr. Thanh The Nguyen, born in 1932 in Hanoi, Vietnam. Mr. Nguyen was a ARVN officer in South Vietnam and served his country from 1950-1975. After the collapse of South Vietnam, he was sent to a reeducation camp and was released after 10 years. Mr. Nguyen was happy to speak about his time before the war as well as the events in his life after the war and coming to California. He immigrated to California through the Orderly Departure Program - Humanitarian Operation. Previously he worked as a security guard but has been retired for the past 10 years. Mr. Nguyen is a past member of the Armory Regiment who get together annually to honor their fallen brothers-in-arms during the Vietnam War. He currently lives with one out of his 9 children.Recorded Digitall

The Failure of the Hong Kong Court of Appeal to Recognise and Remedy Disability Discrimination
Get PDFThis article critiques the recent decision of the Hong Kong Court of Appeal in Ma Bik Yung v Ko Chuen, the first case to be tried under Hong Kong's Disability Discrimination Ordinance. The Court of Appeal upheld the District Court's finding of disability harassment but granted the appeal from the finding of disability discrimination. The author argues that the Court erred, by introducing a hypothetical factual scenario that was inconsistent with the District Court's findings of fact and by failing to apply s3 of the Ordinance. The article also criticises the Court's holding that an 'unwilling' apology is outside the scope of remedies allowed by the Ordinance. In fact, similar statutory language is regularly used in Australia as the basis for orders to apologise. The author concludes by considering the potential conflict between the right to free expression and court-ordered apologies and suggests two possible approaches to the issue.published_or_final_versio

He spent his early adulthood working small jobs with his younger brother scrambling for money to send back home. He also discussed his memories back when he was a child and how Vietnamese customs were back then.
