ESG-Linked Compensation, CEO Skills, and Shareholder Welfare

    No full text
Executive compensation is increasingly being linked to ESG outcomes. This paper examines whether ESG targets are consistent with shareholder welfare. Using granular information on compensation contracts of Swedish CEOs, we show that ESG and financial targets are competing. ESG-linked compensation is 5 percentage points more common in well-governed firms and 6.3 percentage points more likely for CEOs with broader skill sets (generalist CEOs). ESG scores of well-governed firms improve when generalist CEOs have ESG-linked pay, but there is no effect on profitability. These results suggest that boards set ESG contracts because shareholders derive utility from ESG in addition to wealth, and ESG may not be produced without these incentives. (JEL M14, G14, D21, L21

The value of information risk: is there an acquisition discount for less readable financial disclosures?

    No full text
The readability of financial disclosures plays a crucial role in how firms effectively communicate value-relevant information to the market. This study investigates the association between readability and firm valuation within the context of takeovers. We find that target firms with less readable annual reports receive lower bids and earn lower announcement returns. Our findings suggest that both acquirers and the market discount opaque targets, especially in inter-industry acquisitions, where adverse selection is more severe compared to intra-industry deals

Comparison of oral efficacy between PPIs and H2RAs in subjects for prevention and monitoring of peptic ulcer-associated recurrence rates from 1985 to 2021: A systematic review and meta-analysis

    No full text
12 p.Currently, although there are many randomized controlled trials comparing the effectiveness of proton pump inhibitors and H2-antihistamines in relation to peptic ulcer disease, meta-analytical studies on this topic are still limited and conclusions have not come to consensus. Therefore, a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials evaluated by the Cochrane Collaboration tool is essential. From January 1st, 1985, to May 31st, 2022, the study was carried out on three databases: Pubmed, Cochrane, and Embase. Statistics are expressed as odds ratios, with confidence intervals of 95 %, and a random effects model is used. Results: Proton pump inhibitors increase the effectiveness of reatment more than H2-antihistamines. Specifically, on prevention subjects = 0.15 (95 % CI: 0.05-0.44), patients who are monitored for relapse rates without medication = 0.92 (95 % CI: 0.75-1.14), and with medication = 0.50 (95 % CI: 0.31-0.80). In conclusion, proton pump inhibitors are the first-line medicine for ulcer prevention and post-healing monitoring

The Quest for Deeper Learning and Engagement in Advanced High School Courses

    No full text
    · GLEF and a research team from the University of Washington worked with Washington\u27s Bellevue School District to develop and assess the impact of project-based learning on upper-level courses in high school. · Research suggests that Advanced Placement (AP) courses may focus too much on accelerated content at the expense of deeper conceptual learning. · The number of students taking AP courses has grown, but along with this the number failing has increased. GLEF and the research team tested project-based learning (PBL) to counteract this trend. · Results after two years are promising. Students in the PBL-AP courses are performing as well or better than students in traditional AP courses. · Other education funders are encouraged to use an iterative design process, work with a diverse design team, and bring in partners who can contribute needed expertise and resources
