In a previous work to obtain the degree of Licenciatura, carried out in 2005, the author described the time spent in Cicopi. One of the characteristics of this flexional category is the occurrence of a morpheme in the final position of the verb. The present study describes and analyzes the characteristics of the two verb tenses mentioned above, present and future, to verify the similarities and differences, from the structural and functional point of view in order to allow generalizations about the functioning of the inflectional categories of the verb, an aspect relevant to understanding the functioning of Cicopi's grammar (TRADUÇÃO NOSSA

This thesis looks at the segmental sounds that are operative in Barwe. It starts by describing how the data collection was strategized starting with preliminary surveys. It describes the data collection stages that subsequently took place. A description of how the data was processed, stored and retrieved for analysis using corpus processing programmes such as the Corpus Query and the Transcriber programmes was also made. The thesis thus identifies and makes a description of the characteristics of the phonemes as they occur and operate in the language. It also makes a phonetic description of how the sounds are articulated. The main focus is the operations of the sound system of the language that involves the sounds that have been placed into two categories which are consonants and vowels. These sounds combine and operate together in the formation of syllables which consist of consonants which are represented with C and vowels represented with V. As they combine to form syllables these sounds have defined roles as the Cs are shown to be syllable margins while the vowels play the nucleus role in syllables known to be CV shaped. As these sounds string and partner for the syllable formulation they interact between themselves thereby setting the phonological processes which are traced and analysed in this thesis. Thus the stringing together of the sounds is not random as Barwe like all the other languages of the world regulates the patterning that is permissible within the language. Thus, in the thesis we show that as these sounds partner they position themselves in ways that allow the mentioned sound interaction. This occurs in regulated fashion as some positioning can be allowed while some are disallowed. Thus as we identify the unitary sounds that are operative in the language we also demonstrate that these sounds do not linearly operate as individual sounds. iTwo theoretical frameworks are used in the thesis to try analyse the phonological processes in the language. These are the Lexical Phonology theory and CV Phonology. Lexical phonology theory recognizes that morphological processes in a word trigger new sound configurations in the word. On the other hand, CV Phonology recognizes that sounds combine but they are in two categories as they either belong to the C or V tier of the syllable. Thus in the thesis the operations of the sounds are analysed and described looking at the functional role in terms of the C and V demarcations. The sounds are shown to be operating as composite phonological units which are thus shown as occupying the C or V slot on the CV tier. Thus as reflected in the title of the thesis, the interest is in the constituent elements and as the analysis in the thesis goes on we show that each sound belongs to a syllable position while each syllable has segment content. We thus make a historical analysis of the Bantu sounds development in general but also making a focus on the development in Barwe. We then look at the specific phonological processes that involve particular categories of sounds. We describe and analyse glide formation, glide insertion, vowel deletion, vowel coalescence, and vowel harmony as phonological processes that involve Barwe vowels. We also look at sound processes that involve consonant operations as we analyse prenasalizition in general and one that comes as a result of the class 9 and 10 prefixation (N). Also looked at are the operations of the syllabic nasal N which now operates as a C component without a vowel after the historical prefix vowel loss. The N is shown to assimilate the place features of the consonants it precedes. The thesis also discusses the complex sound production in the language as we analyse the sound modifications that come with secondary articulation involving the labiovelar [w]. It partners other consonants thereby resulting labialization and velarization of those sounds. The thesis also looks at the operations of the liquids [l] and [ɾ] which are shown to be a single sound as there are no minimal pairs to demonstrate that they are separate sounds of the language. iiThese co-occur in unextended verbs domains for the purpose of dissimilation. [ɾ] is shown also operating as a pre-flap as it pre-modifies [k] and [ʒ]. We also draw the conclusion that as Barwe go through language sound change of the two liquids [ɾ] is preferred as the [l] from adoptives is rephonologised to [r]. We then sum up the discussion looking at conclusions and summaries made in all the chapters2021-08-24Esta tese examina os sons segmentais que operam em Barwe.

The variation of the pitch of the voice when emitting a syllable or a word can result in the distinction of words (Dictionary of Linguistics 1973, Duthie 1996 and Ngunga 2010). This variation of the voice is called tone. The analysis reveals that Xitshwa, like other Mozambican languages, is a tonal language and has two tonal contrasts: the high tone and the low tone. The relevance of studying the impact of the tone in tonal languages lies in the fact that it allows to demonstrate that the tone functions as a phoneme or segment. That is, words that at the segmental level are identical, such as wagá 'you eat' and wágá 'he eats', can be distinguished only by tone. The tone can have a lexical or grammatical function and can distinguish grammatical persons, tenses or verbal aspects, verbal polarity or can distinguish verbs. The work is organized into four chapters that include: (1) introduction, where a brief presentation of the work, the language, the purpose of the work and the methodology used in data collection is made; (2) literature review, where previous works on the subject are reviewed; (3) data analysis, where the data collected for the analysis is discussed and (4) conclusions, where the conclusions and recommendations resulting from the analysis are presented. Reconhecendo a complexidade do estudo destas categorias, o estudo centrou - se em três modos, a saber: o modo subjuntivo, o modo imperativo e o modo potencial sem contar com o modo indicativo que foi todo o resto que fez na análise da morfologia flexionalThe present work aims in the light of the theoretical framework of Lexical Morphology and Phonology (Kirpasky 1982) to identify and analyze the constituents of the verbal in Changana. This framework is based on the assumption that there is an interrelation between morphology (morphemes) and phonology (phonemes) in such a way that for each morphology, there is a phonology since the phonological environment has been created. In fact, the concatenation of morphemes in the verb structure triggers phonological processes responsible for the allomorphomy that, at times, resolves the interpretation according to which some morphemes are lexically blocked in the formation of words. The main problem of the investigation is, from the structure of the verb in the Ba ntu languages (Meeussen 1967), to analyze the distribution of the constituents (derivational and inflectional) of Changana. The previous answers to the above problem are the following: (i) one that assumes that the constituents of the verb in Changana are realized through different morphemes, whether derivational or inflectional and (ii) flexional morphemes, especially those that express time, the aspect and the mode, can be expressed that by segments or through the supra-segments (ie the tone). The data confirm the hypotheses suggested, however, show that, the structure of the Chan ghana verb has twelve positions of the constituents of the verb (two more positions compared to the structure of Meeussen (1967) and one more position in relation to the structure by Mutaka and Tamanj i (2000) The new positions that must be taken into account in the analysis of the verb in Changana are those of pre-formative and post-formative work. in the areas of morphology and phonology, the segmental system of the language is described, as well as the systematization of phonological processes involving vowels and consonants. From the analysis made, the vowels can trigger, whenever the phonological context is created, the assimilation process through semivocation, coalescence or fusion and elision. For its part, the ii consonants trigger the processes of coarticulation of the homorgamic nasal, elision and velarization. Prosodic aspects such as the syllable structure and the description of how the tone works in the language were taken into account. With regard to the syllable, it was seen that the basic structure of the syllable in this language is CV, although other structures such as V (E x: “augment” in names and aspect marks in the pre-initial position in the verb o structure) occur. or C (Ex: syllabic nasal in names of classes 1 and 3). Regarding the tone, the data analysis showed that the lexical tone was less productive than the grammatical one. In this language, there is an expansion of the high tone in the direction from the left to the right, involving the homes of the constituents that are under the domain of the same phonological phrase. The study also shows that the lexical tone marking is no longer relevant especially in verbs because in a sentence, all verbs have their initial position filled in by a prefix of agreement with the subject with a high tone and, systematically, it expands to the following constituents until the penultimate delay of the verbal phrase. The expansion of the high tone does not only occur at the post - lexical level if the next word has a high contrasting tone. Described only by the sounds of the language, the morphology of the name was analyzed, especially the system of classes and nominal prefixes and their prefixes of agreement with the subject, qualifier, possessive and numeral. From this description, it was found that the nominal prefixes basically display vowels with a low tone and those in agreement the prefixes have all the high tones. The analysis of the verb was divided into two major parts, namely, non-derivative and derivative radical. Derivation is done through verbal extensions. These can be: causative, applicative, reciprocal, passive, frequent, contactive, reversive, estative or pseudo - passive, positional. In the current Changana, positional and contactive extension are the least productive of all. The work tested the CARP model proposed by Hyman (2002). This iii model determines the combination and order of verbal extensions in Bantu languages through intra-morphological validation as opposed to the assumption that the combination and order of verbal extensions is validated in the combination of morphology and syntax (Baker 1985) . CARP testing allowed us to conclude that it is partially applicable in Changana since it was not possible to find in the corpus the combination in the same structure as the passive and reciprocal extension, as well as concluded that the order of causative and applicative combination is strict in this language , contrary to what Hyman and Mchombo (1992) suggest. In the structure of the verb, the verbal extension invariably occurs in the post - radical position, so any other morpheme that is not distributed in this way has been removed from the list of verbal extensions in Changana. Flexional morphology focused on the analysis of morphemes of time, aspect and mode (TAM) and relative. The description of these categories allowed us to conclude that Changana does not distinguish the recent past from the remote or the near future from the distant. It displays the simple or absolute past, the relative past and the previous past and their imperfect aspectual variations while the future is just the simple with its imperfect aspectual variations. The data showed that it is difficult to distinguish the marks of time and the aspect in the present, therefore the work assumes the position of Bybee (1994) according to which the present time is category more aspectual than temporal. Data analysis is accompanied by the presentation of the verb structure and proposals for the designation of each grammatical category in the verb structure. The data analysis showed that of the various positions that can be occupied by the constituents of the verb, the post - initial position is very imprecise because, not infrequently, more than four constituents can occur in it. In the systematization of the distribution of morphemes in the verb structure, the work argues that the pre-formative position should be added, before the formative and post-formative position and that the post-initial position should be reserved only for the morphemes iv of the past previous, relative past, immediate past, negation, potential mode and continuous aspect. With the addition of this position, the structure of the verb in Changana has 12 positions, namely: pre - initial, initial, post - initial, pre - formative, formative and post - formative; pre - radical, radical and post - radi cal and pre - final, final and post - final. The last category analyzed is the mode. Recognizing the complexity of the study of these categories, the study focused on three modes, namely: the subjunctive mode, the imperative mode and the potential mode, not counting the indicative mode that was everything else that did in the analysis of flexural morphology (TRADUÇÃO NOSSA

This language is spoken in Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania, and in Madagascar, Comoros and Mauritius Islands. Recognizing that the basic morphemes which mark the recent past tense in Emakhuwa have several alomorphic variations, in this study we use, for data collection, apart of philological and introspective methods, the interview, highlighting the verbal forms conjugated in the recent past. These data were audio recorded and then transcribed for better analysis. From the collected data we realize that the recent past tense in Emakhuwa can be morphologically marked through three basic morphemes: prefix /-ho-/, suffix /-ale/ and the discontinued morpheme /-(i)N-(j)e/. According to the phonological contexts of its appearance, the prefix /-ho-/ can be presented in the form of [-o-], [-h-], [-ho-] and [-ho-], while the basic suffix /-ale/ is presented in the form of [-ale] and [-ale]; related to the discontinued morpheme /-(i)N-(j)e/, the stress must be put, above all, to the nasal assimilation in the articulation place of the next consonant. From this findings, combined with the hypothesis defined and tested in the present study, we conclude that, in general, the variations of the morphemes which mark the recent past tense in Emakhuwa are determined by the phonological conditions created in the structure of the verbal base when affixed to it

The Morphophonolgy of the Past Tense in Ciyaawo

While time is a philosophical category that humans use to partition the succession of units such as hours, days, weeks, years, centuries, etc., tense is the language resource that humans use to express time reference. According to their culture, humans interpret the time phenomenon in a diversity of ways which are reflected in linguistic expression of time. This diversity explains why, according to Comrie (1985) there are languages which have three basic tenses (past, present and future), other languages have one tense (past) and the other tenses are said to be not tense (non-past). Still other languages distinguish different types of past and future in such a way that, having the tense corresponding to the present time, or the time of speech, as the reference tense, and the other tenses as those expressing events which happen before the present (past) or happen after the present (future), may distinguish recent past from remote past, or near future from distant future. In agglutinative languages, all these tense distinctions are marked in different ways in the verb structure be it segmentally or suprasegmentally. Based on Lexical Phonology and Morphology (Kiparsky 1982, 1985, Mohanan 1982, and others), the present paper aims at describing the morphophonology of the past tense in Ciyaawo, a Bantu (P21 in Guthrie 1967-71’s classification) language spoken mainly in Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania. The paper is organized as follows. After the introduction, it presents the literature review on the topic including the theoretical frameworks adopted; then it describes the past tense markers and the ways they are affixed to the verbs of different root structures. Lastly, it presents the final remarks

Interferências de Línguas Moçambicanas em Português falado em Moçambique

When two groups of people come into contact for a considerable period of time, as the case of Portuguese and the Mozambican, among other things, their languages end up influencing one another (Sapir 1921) through the emergence of some features of either language in the spoken discourse of one of the languages. In linguistics literature, when the linguistic feature of one language is generally present in the other language, that  phenomenon is called loan; yet when  sporadic and (almost) individual, it is called interference (Ngunga 2009), since the process of non-mother tongue acquisition implies using the phonic organs and  psychological processes shaped  to produce  mother tongue sounds and structures. This exercise may result in what language teachers call “errors”, which result from the transfer of mother tongue structures to the target language (Cardoso 2007). Based on the method of observation of over three decades, which consisted in listening, collection  and systematization  of the utterances produced by Mozambicans, the present paper studies  the interferences of Mozambican languages onto the Portuguese language, namely in the following fields: Phonetics, Phonology, Syntax and Semantics. The results of the study show that the sudden appearance of some features of Mozambican languages in the Portuguese language may affect the communication process in the latter. Therefore, the paper suggests some strategies to help the teacher in finding some exercises to minimize the learning difficulties the Mozambican non-mother speakers of Portuguese encounter when attempting to learn this language.

Disertação de Mestrado em Desenvolvimento RuralThis dissertation is the result of research on the functioning and challenge of community radio and focuses on the study of the Community Radio of the District of Homoíne (RCH). Despite the existence of community radio stations in the country, little academic research has been done to assess the functioning and challenges in the areas where they are located. Thus, the present study aims to analyze the operation of Homoíne community radio for local development. Data collection was based on a survey of 395 households, interviews with 26 key informants and observation of local radio insertion conditions. The results of the study show that radio is the most used means of communication in the district with around 83%, against 11.9% for TV and 5.1 for the written press. In relation to radio, 69.6% listen to local radio (RCH) and of these, 41.5% are men and 28.1% are women. Therefore, 43% of respondents say they listen every day, and Saturday and Sunday are the days they listen the most, as they spend a lot of time at home. One of the great motivations to listen more to RCH is due to the news that is of great interest (31%), the use of local languages (21%), since about 75% of programs are presented in Xitshwa, the local language. . In general, news (21%), sport (20%) and educational programs (18%), are the most heard programs. The study also notes that there is an association between listening to the radio and the level of education, with the most educated listening more diversified in relation to the less educated. Most listeners think that local radio participates in local development, as this medium disseminates information that allows, over time, to shape new forms of society organization and promotes citizenship and democracy. However, there is a limited participation of communities in the definition of radio programmatic content. Therefore, there is a need for community involvement in the development of programs in the local language, with a view to increasing their number. In addition to capitalizing on all the potential that the RCH presents, the RCH needs to overcome the weaknesses and threats associated with the absence of an editorial body, lack of financial and technical resources.
