Process-based modeling applied to the growth and productivity of eucalyptus
The high productivity of eucalyptus is the result of the use of adapted genetic materials and best management practices. However, due to the diversity of site conditions in which eucalyptus is cultivated in Brazil, there is a difference between the productivity achieved in the field and its maximum potential. The objective of this study was to calibrate and validate the 3-PG and APSIM Next Generation Eucalyptus simulation models to understand yield losses and assess the sensitivity of eucalyptus productivity in Minas Gerais, Brazil. The 3-PG and APSIM models were calibrated and evaluated using experimental eucalyptus productivity data from different producing regions in Minas Gerais. Both models showed good performance in simulating different climatic conditions, soils, and genotypes. APSIM proved to be more effective in simulating a generic crop under contrasting conditions. Additionally, water deficiency was identified as the main factor causing productivity loss, emphasizing the need for more drought-tolerant clones and adjustments in forest management. Regarding the sensitivity of the models to simulate productivity in different regions, both 3-PG and APSIM responded positively to an increase in soil water availability. APSIM showed greater sensitivity, and there was variation in productivity according to the soil water availability. These models can be improved, for example, by using soil classes in APSIM, or even a vertical distribution of the root system in both models, to enhance water dynamics and absorption by plants. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Cover crops in terraced coffee plantations: strategies for carbon sequestration and optimization of nitrogen fertilization in mountain agriculture
In the state of Minas Gerais (MG), Arabica coffee (Coffea arabica) accounts for over 70% of the national production. In the Matas de Minas region, characterized by mountainous agriculture, several challenges hinder sustainable production, such as the impossibility of mechanization, high levels of soil degradation, and low fertilizer use efficiency due to surface runoff. Terracing in sloped areas has emerged as a viable strategy to address these issues, as it facilitates machinery traffic, allows for greater technification, and contributes to soil conservation. However, the implementation of terraces causes initial soil disturbance, leading to losses in organic matter, nutrients, and structure, especially in surface layers. Therefore, effective strategies for restoring soil fertility and quality are essential to ensure the sustainability and productivity of mountain coffee farming systems. This study aimed to evaluate the use of cover crops (legume and grass species) in the inter-rows of terraced coffee plantations as a strategy to restore and enhance soil carbon (C) stocks and improve nutrient management in coffee plants. The research was divided into two experiments: Experiment 1 – Using cover crops on terraced coffee plantations as a carbon sequestration strategy in mountain agriculture; and Experiment 2 – Cover crops for optimizing nitrogen fertilization in terraced coffee plantations in mountain agriculture. In Experiment 1, the impact of terrace construction on C stocks was assessed, along with the effects of Brachiaria (Urochloa ruziziensis-BR) and Arachis pintoi (forage peanut-AF) on the recovery and increase of C and N stocks in the 0–10, 10–20, 20–40, and 40–60 cm soil layers over a four-year cultivation period. In Experiment 2, the possibility of reducing mineral nitrogen fertilization through the use of BR and AF was evaluated by applying different urea doses (0, 100, 150, and 300 kg ha?¹). Litter decomposition (via the litterbag method), the nutritional status of coffee plants, and coffee yield were assessed across treatments. Results showed that BR contributed greater surface C input via biomass, while AF was more effective in recovering total organic carbon (TOC) throughout the soil profile (0–60 cm). Biomass decomposition from both species released substantial amounts of nutrients within 180 days post- cutting, positively influencing the nutritional status of coffee plants, particularly under AF. Coffeeproductivity increased by 22.5% (AF) and 14.45% (BR), with reductions in N-urea requirements of 70.0% and 66.74%, respectively, compared to coffee plants without cover crops under conventional management. Nutritional efficiency and Gas exchange in young plants of Corymbia spp
This study encompasses three distinct objectives: (1) to evaluate the efficiency of carbon and mineral nutrient utilization for leaf area production in genetic materials of Corymbia spp. in a clonal mini-garden; (2) to analyze morphological and physiological parameters of seedlings from Corymbia spp. clones; and (3) to investigate the efficiencies of nutrient absorption, utilization, and translocation in seedlings. In Study 1, leaves from 53 genetic materials of Corymbia were collected in the clonal mini-garden of the Research Nursery of the Department of Forest Engineering at the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV). Fresh and dry matter masses, leaf area, and specific leaf area (SLA) were measured, along with the determination of macro- and micronutrient contents. For Studies 2 and 3, seven genetic materials of Corymbia spp. and the Eucalyptus hybrid I-144 were cultivated in pots with nutrient solution in a greenhouse and growth chamber at the Department of Soils at UFV. In Study 2, physiological variables such as net photosynthetic rate (A), stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration (Tr), water use efficiency (WUE), intrinsic water use efficiency (IWUE), and electron transport rate (ETR) were measured using a gas analyzer (IRGA). Morphological characteristics, including height, stem diameter, and dry matter mass of the shoot and root, as well as the Dickson Quality Index (DQI), were also evaluated. In Study 3, the contents of P, K, Ca, and Mg in leaves and roots were analyzed, and the efficiencies of absorption, utilization, and translocation of these nutrients were calculated. The results of Study 1 revealed a wide variability in carbon and nutrient use efficiencies among the genetic materials, highlighting the potential for selecting more efficient genotypes. In Study 2, clones K33 and SI0520 achieved the highest DQI values, as well as the highest rates of A, gs, and Tr, while clone 1017 recorded the lowest values for these parameters. In Study 3, nutritional efficiencies varied according to the genetic material and the nutrient evaluated, enabling the selection of genotypes adapted to different levels of soil nutrient availability. The results obtained from the three studies underscore the importance of an integrated evaluation of morphological, physiological, and nutritional parameters for the selection of Corymbia spp. genetic materials with greater efficiency in carbon and nutrient use. In Study 1, the wide variability observed in carbon and nutrient use efficiencies among genetic materials indicates the potential for identifying superior genotypes, particularly for production systems in nutrient- limited soils. In Study 2, clones with higher DQI values also exhibited higher photosynthetic rates and gas exchange (A, gs, and Tr), reflecting their greater biomass production capacity and seedling quality. In Study 3, the variation in nutrient absorption, utilization, and translocation efficiencies among clones reinforces the need to consider specific nutritional traits to optimize management and performance under different soil fertility conditions. Overall, the results of this study provide valuable insights for breeding programs, enabling the selection of Corymbia spp. clones that are more efficient and adapted to various resource availability scenarios. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
